Stalin orders Madurai zonal chiefs to quit amid property tax scam
M K Stalin
ordered all five zonal chairpersons of the Madurai corporation to resign from their posts. The move followed the recent expulsion of the mayor's husband from the party and came amid the recent property tax scam.
The zonal chairpersons are Vasuki Sasikumar (Madurai East), Saravana Bhuvaneshwari (Madurai North), Pandi Selvi (Madurai Central), Mugesh Sharma (Madurai South), and V Suvitha (Madurai West).
Highly placed sources from DMK said the directive was issued during Stalin's ongoing 'Udanpirappe Vaa' one-on-one outreach with party functionaries, where he warned that positions would be withdrawn wherever necessary, without leniency.
The discontent simmered for months, especially after a controversial corporation council meeting in May. The council meeting, which coincided with a consultative meeting chaired by commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, ahead of DMK's general council meeting, was held without quorum. Of the 100 councillors, only 25 were present initially. With the support of AIADMK councillors, quorum was managed, and resolutions were passed — an unusual move that triggered concerns within DMK ranks.
In the lead-up to the party's general council meeting in Madurai on May 29, the party suspended mayor Indrani Ponvasanth's husband, Vasanth. A directive from DMK general secretary Durai Murugan cited that Vasanth acted against party interests. Sources said he insisted on conducting the corporation meeting despite internal opposition, creating a rift in the local leadership.
Adding to the controversy, a property tax scam rocked the city corporation.
A 10-month probe by the central crime branch of Madurai city police uncovered large-scale irregularities in the property tax assessment process by changing the data in the Urban Tree Information System (UTIS). At least five temporary revenue staff were arrested for allegedly reducing property tax for more than 150 buildings, causing financial loss to the Madurai corporation.
Official sources confirmed that the role of zonal chairpersons was also under scrutiny.
Intelligence reports sent to the DMK leadership reportedly allege that several zone heads may have colluded with local bill collectors in the scam.
According to party sources, minister of municipal administration K N Nehru, commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, and IT minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan met all the zonal chairpersons recently and held discussions in Madurai on Monday.
"We met the mayor and the chairpersons to review and speed up civic works ahead of the elections, not for any internal party matter.
The party high command will make decisions regarding resignations, Nehru informed TOI. However, a highly placed party source, on condition of anonymity, said that the party leadership is also unhappy with the functioning of the mayor, and she may not continue in the post for long.
When contacted, Vasuki Sasikumar said she had not received any official intimation about her resignation. "If I receive a directive, I will respond accordingly," she told TOI.
However, DMK sources said all five zonal chairpersons have to resign, and communication in this regard might not have reached them. The other four zonal chairpersons were unavailable for comment.

I was disrespected at temple: Selvaperunthagai
Chennai: TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday said he was treated with disrespect at the Vallakottai Murugan temple consecration in Kancheepuram despite arriving on time. The DMK allies called for action against HR&CE officials while minister P K Sekarbabu visited the Congress leader and assured action. "The minister expressed regret for the incident," Selvaperunthagai said. The controversy related to the consecration ceremony of the temple, which took place after 17 years. Former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundarajan, Selvaperunthagai, and DMK (Anna Nagar) MLA M K Mohan were among those in attendance. Selvaperunthagai said he wasn't treated with the respect an elected representative deserved. "It is customary for the elected representatives to flag off the temple consecration ceremony by standing on top of the Temple Vimana, and it happens that way in all temple festivals. But during this festival, the HR&CE officials flagged it off. Similarly, there was no one to even guide me and take me to the appropriate places. None of the protocols were followed," he told TOI. Sources in the HR&CE department said officials concerned submitted a report to the higher-ups saying the Congress leader arrived late and missed the prayers, despite priests waiting for him for 30 minutes. Selvaperunthagai denied these accusations. "I was asked to come at 8.30am, and I reached the temple at 8.15am. I was waiting in the temple storeroom to participate in the prayers, but there was no one there to accompany me because of which I had to leave. Some have an ancient mindset." CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said, "This is against social justice, and stringent action should be taken against officials who are responsible for the incident." CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said Selvaperunthagai's caste (SC), was the reason for the alleged discrimination. VCK MP D Ravikumar called for abolition of discrimination in temples.

DMK functionaries gherao minister in party event, refuse to allow him
Pudukottai: Tension prevailed for a while in the DMK's booth level agents (BLA) meeting in Pudukottai on Tuesday as party functionaries and cadres gheraoed DMK's principal secretary K N Nehru and refused to let him in. They demanded changes in the party's urban district unit leadership. In a similar event at a different location, functionaries expressed their dissatisfaction over the district-level leaders constantly sidelining the backward class welfare minister Siva V Meyyanathan, an MLA representing the Alangudi constituency in the district. Sources said that the BLA meeting for the north and south districts of Pudukottai DMK was conducted in two different wedding halls in the town. The meeting for the north district was organised by the district secretary K K Chellapandian and for the south district by the secretary and minister for natural resources S Regupathy. When municipal administration minister Nehru entered the south district meeting venue, supporters of Meyyanathan expressed dissatisfaction over the south district's leadership for constantly ignoring the MLA's images in the party's banners. The functionaries who blocked Nehru from entering the venue said that they would not leave the party, as they have worked hard. Though the minister invited the functionaries for a talk, the protesters refused to allow the minister inside the hall and raised their dissent. Party sources said that Nehru informed the functionaries that their demands shall be taken to the notice of the CM and deputy CM for a solution during their upcoming visit to Trichy.

Pass resolution against new labour codes: VCK chief to CM
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Tuesday urged the State government to ensure implementation of Old Pension Scheme as promised by the DMK before the elections and said that Centre's decision to change 44 workers' welfare laws into four new Labour codes has snatched away workers' rights. Speaking to the reporters at Anna Arivalayam, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that the new codes has made sure that unorganised workers welfare unions will not be able to function as before. 'I have urged the Chief Minister to push back against the four new Labour codes and pass a resolution in the State Assembly,' he said. He added that several castes are being referred to in official documents with suffixes widely construed as disrespectful and urged the State Government to refer to castes with respect and dignity.
