Penfield's Emling tops Section Five Best

Yahoo28-05-2025
Patrick Emling had himself a week. So did his Penfield baseball team.
The Patriots senior had a run and an RBI–all the offense in a 2-0 win–that helped Penfield to a round one sectional win on Thursday. He scored the winning run in Penfield's extra inning stunner against top seeded Athena Friday. Finally, Emling went 3-3 with two RBIs and twirled a complete game with seven strikeouts as Penfield won for their third playoff game in three days.
By the way, the Patriots are the 16(!) seed in the Class AA playoffs and now sit two wins short of an all-time Cinderella story.
That's not all the greatness for this week's edition of Section Five Best. Cal-Mum's Emma Brogan won the high jump and triple jump at the Livingston County meet last week. She added a runner-up in the 100 meters. It all was good enough to earn Brogan LCAA Female Track Athlete of the Year honors.
In lacrosse, Connor Moore had an eight goal explosion for Irondequoit last Wednesday. He followed with four goals and three assists over the weekend as the Eagles won both games. Kiera Gioseffi closed her regular season with a pair of five goal games helping Canandaigua head into the playoffs hot.
Aimee Turner keeps getting her name called this spring. The Arcadia quarterback marched the titles into the flag football finals with a three touchdown performance in the semis that featured 250 total yards, including 179 on the ground.

Projecting Patriots depth chart ahead of 2025 training camp

The New England Patriots spent an entire offseason acquiring talent, and now, they'll spend an entire training camp whittling that talent down to 53 players. Some tough decisions are on the horizon for Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, with players set to battle it out on the practice field for one of the few coveted roster spots. Vrabel having no ties to the previous roster in New England should ensure a wide-open competition this summer. He wasn't afraid to let David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Joe Cardona—the last remaining remnants of the Patriots' Super Bowl era—walk out the door. So there's no reason to think logic will be hindered by any form of status or prestige in the building. Here is a depth chart projection for the Patriots ahead of 2025 training camp: Quarterback There will be no quarterback controversy heading into training camp for the Patriots. Drake Maye is the starter and potential franchise face of the team, while Josh Dobbs is the emergency Plan B option. Rookie Ben Wooldridge is simply looking to impress enough to get the call back for a spot on the practice squad. Running back One of the biggest questions heading into training camp is how much rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson pushes Rhamondre Stevenson for the starting job. Henderson is the more versatile running back with the ability to run, receive and pass protect at an elite level. Undrafted rookie Lan Larison is also a player to watch in the running back competition. He's an underrated player with a legitimate shot at making the final 53-man roster. Wide receiver The Patriots could have two new starters at wide receiver with the arrival of four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs and rookie third-round draft pick Kyle Williams. More receiving threats could mean big things for Demario Douglas, who is currently the team's best option in the slot. The real competition will come down the depth chart with undrafted rookie Efton Chism III posing a serious threat to second-year wide receivers Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. Tight end Hunter Henry led the Patriots in receiving yards last season, and Austin Hooper proved to be one of the more reliable receiving targets for quarterback Drake Maye. It should be rinse, wash and repeat for the veterans in 2025 with little competition to push them. The No. 3 tight end role could come down between Jaheim Bell and undrafted rookie CJ Dippre. Offensive line The Patriots have reconstructed their offensive line with the additions of rookie first-round pick left tackle Will Campbell, along with veteran right tackle Morgan Moses and center Garrett Bradbury. They still have one of the better right guards in the league in Mike Onwenu, and Cole Strange is finally healthy at left guard. There are still some depth questions, particularly at tackle, but this Patriots unit is miles better on paper than it was a year ago. Defensive tackle The defensive front in New England could be the best it's been in years with the arrival of Milton Williams and a healthy Christian Barmore. That gives the Patriots two potential game wreckers anchoring the defensive line. They also added a promising newcomer in rookie Joshua Farmer, who has the potential to emerge as a major contributor right out of the gate. Edge rusher Harold Landry was one of the Patriots' big free agent signings in the offseason. He's a talented veteran pass rusher with experience playing under Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. However, the star of the pass rush should be Keion White. The former second-round draft pick is itching for a breakout season that could finally come this year in a defense that will allow him to pin his ears back and get after quarterbacks. Linebacker Robert Spillane has looked like the leading linebacker throughout the spring practices. Jahlani Tavai is currently dealing with an injury, and it could open the door for Christian Elliss to leapfrog him on the depth chart. There was already a chance things were leaning in that direction with Elliss getting some of the top reps with Spillane in the early practices. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL in only his third year. He earned his first All-Pro nod last season after blanketing some of the best receivers in the league. The Patriots made their secondary even scarier by signing Carlton Davis III in free agency. If Marcus Jones stays healthy in the slot, New England could have one of the best secondary units in the league. Safety Things look incredibly familiar at the top with Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers leading the way. But the Patriots have a talented rookie safety who is capable of stealing the show. Rookie fourth-round draft pick Craig Woodson turned heads throughout the spring practices with his instinctive play on the field. We'll see if he can keep the early success rolling in pads during the summer work. Special teams The Patriots spent two late draft picks on rookie kicker Andres Borregales and long snapper Julian Ashby. It's hard to envision either one of those being throwaway picks. Borregales should be the favorite to beat out John Parker Romo for the starting job, and Ashby doesn't have any real competition at the moment. Meanwhile, Bryce Baringer has been a solid punter for the Patriots. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Perceived first-round draft bust explains new mindset with Patriots

New England Patriots edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson is coming into training camp with a new mindset. It was desperately needed in his slip from a 2020 first-round draft pick to a journeyman defensive player. This is Chaisson's fourth NFL team in a little over two years. A fifth opportunity isn't guaranteed, so he is making the most out of the chance he has in New England. "I knew this was way bigger than me and way more than me," Chaisson said on the Big Bidness Podcast. "But if my daughter ain't make that even times 10, it was a no-brainer, like I ain't got no choice now. You've got to do everything you've got to do. "...Every day. Like, I work out every single day. I don't skip. ...I quit the what-if mindset, like anything, like, 'What if I stop eating all of the artificial sugars. What if I really did only eat right, and I stretch every morning?' I just cut it like, '[Expletive], just do it. What's stopping you? The only thing stopping you is you.'" Chaisson signed with the Patriots back in March after stops at the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders. He has played in 15 games with four starts, 32 combined tackles, five sacks, two pass deflections and a forced fumble. Despite his earlier NFL struggles, Chaisson stood out as a potential playmaker during the spring practices. Perhaps he ends up being a better fit for New England than the previous defenses he's played for in the NFL. The Patriots struggled to generate a consistent pass rush last season, and Chaisson's renewed drive and motivation could be exactly what the defense needs to get back on track.
