KUALA LUMPUR: The meeting between Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded after about 50 minutes.
Lavrov, who was seen leaving the venue around 7pm, did not speak to the media following the session.
Rubio, however, was scheduled to proceed to a trilateral meeting with Japan and the Philippines immediately after the bilateral discussions ended.
At 6.15pm, Lavrov and Rubio were seen entering a meeting room at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, shortly after concluding their respective Post-Ministerial Meetings with Asean earlier in the day.
This marks the second in-person meeting between the two top diplomats. Their first encounter took place in February in Saudi Arabia, as part of the Trump administration's efforts to re-establish bilateral relations and help broker an end to the war.
According to Reuters, President Donald Trump — who returned to office this year with a promise to swiftly end the conflict that began in 2022 — has adopted a noticeably more conciliatory tone towards Moscow, in contrast to his predecessor Joe Biden's firm support for Kyiv.
However, on Tuesday, just one day after authorising the delivery of US defensive weapons to Ukraine, Trump issued an unusually sharp rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that the latter's recent remarks on peace efforts were "meaningless".
Trump has also indicated that he is considering supporting a bill that would impose severe sanctions on Russia, including tariffs of up to 500 per cent on countries that continue to import Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other key exports.

Openness brings progress, closure leads to backwardness: Chinese FM on U.S.-imposed tarrifs

KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Openness brings progress, while closure leads to backwardness, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Saturday when commenting on U.S.-imposed high tariffs against various countries. Amid the ongoing mixture of changes and chaos in the current international situation, every country must make a choice between unilateralism and multilateralism, closeness and openness, unity and division, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who was here attending the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers' meetings in the Malaysian capital. China's choice is to be more open, he stressed, explaining that this is not only the basic experience of China's development and growth, but also the inevitable logic of history moving forward. China has taken the initiative to provide zero-tariff treatment for products to the least developed countries and the entire Africa, fully completed negotiations on the Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, and has created a new model of cross-regional cooperation at the ASEAN-China-GCC summit, he added. In contrast, the high tariffs imposed on various countries are a clear violation of World Trade Organization rules, disrupting the stable operation of the production and supply chains, and hindering the recovery and development of the world economy, said the Chinese foreign minister, adding that such move is irresponsible, unpopular, and unsustainable. Wang said that China will continue to stand firmly with countries in the region, promoting unity, cooperation, and collective strength, and will always be an advocate of multilateralism, a defender of free trade, and a contributor to open development, he said.

Visits abroad no for leisure, says Anwar

Anwar says every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. – Bernama photo KUALA TERENGGANU (July 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied that his official visits abroad, including to Brazil to attend the recent BRICS Summit, were merely for 'leisure', but rather as an important effort to establish global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various Asean meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the Asean Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of Asean, the Federal Government, and state governments. It will certainly position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region,' he said. Anwar added that with the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology centres, which demand significantly higher energy and water capacities than typical industries, it was crucial for Malaysia to support and help realise the Asean Power Grid initiative. He also said Malaysia was increasingly respected on the global stage, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation of major powers in recent Asean meetings, indicating confidence in the country's stability and economic potential. Anwar noted that while Asean meetings involved 10 member countries as well as Timor Leste, the attendance of major powers such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye was a remarkable show of support for the platform. 'This is because they see Malaysia as a peaceful, united nation with great potential for trade cooperation,' he said. – Bernama anwar ibrahim asean brics criticism meetings visit

Anwar holds a bilateral meeting with High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas at the Prime Minister Office on July 11, 2025 on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 12):A series of courtesy visits by dignitaries from various countries, as well as the European Union, highlight Malaysia's active role in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia had received visits from dignitaries from Australia, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, the European Union and the United Kingdom yesterday. 'These meetings open up new areas of cooperation in trade, education, technology, humanitarianism and regional peace, which reflect Malaysia's commitment as a principled and trusted partner on the international stage,' he said in a post on X today.
