Meeting with foreign leaders highlight Malaysia's active role in bilateral, multilateral diplomacy, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR (July 12):A series of courtesy visits by dignitaries from various countries, as well as the European Union, highlight Malaysia's active role in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia had received visits from dignitaries from Australia, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, the European Union and the United Kingdom yesterday.
'These meetings open up new areas of cooperation in trade, education, technology, humanitarianism and regional peace, which reflect Malaysia's commitment as a principled and trusted partner on the international stage,' he said in a post on X today.
Anwar Ibrahim yesterday held several bilateral meetings with leaders and senior representatives from seven countries and international entities, on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings here.

9,408 students to benefit from first phase of Madani tuition project
KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu will become the first state to implement the Madani Tuition Programme, which is set to benefit 9,408 students. With an allocation of RM5.27mil and the support of 614 schoolteachers, the programme is part of the government's broader poverty eradication and educational empowerment initiative. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Terengganu was selected to pilot the programme in recognition of its students' outstanding performances in public examinations. 'I value Terengganu's excellent results. (Therefore) I would like to announce a special initiative for Terengganu as an early form of assistance for school students. 'This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with schoolteachers. This is the first programme in Malaysia,' he said during the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme 2025 (PMR 2025) at Pasar Kedai Payang here yesterday. Also present were Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Bernama reported. Anwar said the Madani Tuition Programme complements the RM100 aid previously channelled for the purchase of books and learning materials for students and teachers. The programme will be supervised by the relevant ministers and the ministry secretary-general, with plans already in place to expand the initiative to Kelantan. In a further boost to education in the state, Anwar also announced that the government had approved the construction of a new matriculation college in Marang and land acquisition for the Kuala Terengganu Polytechnic campus. At the ceremony, 10 excellent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 students also received Madani Permai devices. Separately, Anwar announced that Terengganu had received RM30mil under the SejaTi Madani Programme – a unity government initiative aimed at boosting community economic activities. 'Each village is allocated funds and can decide what economic activities to pursue, based on their needs. 'For example, in Parit Buntar, Perak, villagers purchased two drones for fertiliser spraying. They now earn a net profit of RM30,000 monthly. If we empower and manage our communities well, such projects can outperform conventional development efforts,' he said. The SejaTi Madani Programme focuses on five core sectors: agriculture and food, tailoring and handicrafts, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality, and green activities such as recycling. The Terengganu edition of the PMR 2025 recorded an overwhelming public response, with 82,182 visitors as of noon yesterday – far exceeding the initial three-day target of 25,000. PMR 2025 is organised by the Prime Minister's Office through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit, in strategic collaboration with the Works Ministry and the Implementation Coordination Unit under the Prime Minister's Department.

Govt to monitor students still in Iran
JELI: The five Malaysian students who have chosen to remain in Iran will continue to be monitored by the Higher Education Ministry, says Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir ( pic ). 'The government has offered support and expressed its willingness to help them return if they choose to,' said the Higher Education Minister, Bernama reported. 'We will continue to monitor their situation closely, wherever they are, to ensure their safety,' he told reporters after opening the Jeli Umno division meeting here. Previously, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed only five Malaysians remained in Iran by choice. All five had signed letters of undertaking to stay in the country, despite the government's earlier advisory urging Malaysians to leave amid tit-for-tat air strikes between Iran and Israel. On June 23, the Malaysian government brought back a total of 24 individuals who arrived safely at the KL International Airport from Iran on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. They comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens and one Singaporean national. Meanwhile, Zambry said all students who survived the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris crash on June 9 have been discharged from hospital.

Lenggong Valley tourist arrivals surge 280% in two years
LENGGONG: Lenggong Valley has experienced a remarkable 280 per cent surge in tourist arrivals over the past two years, transforming it into a thriving heritage tourism hub. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad revealed that visitor numbers skyrocketed from 24,770 in 2022 to 114,182 in 2023, driven by strategic development efforts. The economic ripple effect has been substantial, with tour guides witnessing a 237 per cent income increase and accommodation providers recording a 145 per cent revenue boost. 'This growth directly benefits rural communities, including Orang Asli groups, now engaged in tourism-linked activities like handicrafts, traditional food, and homestays,' Saarani said during a dinner event marking the Aspiring Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark evaluation. Scientific assessments have identified 39 geosites, 11 geoarchaeological sites, eight biosites, and 21 cultural sites within the valley, five of which hold international geological significance. 'Lenggong Valley's unique blend of geology, biodiversity, and archaeology makes it a prime research and tourism destination,' he added. The state government is enhancing Lenggong's global profile through partnerships with geopark networks in Japan, South Korea, and Turkey. 'It's now a heritage-based human capital development centre,' Saarani emphasised. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, the 22 sq km valley forms part of the larger 2,248 sq km Aspiring Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark, spanning five subdistricts with 61,039 residents. - Bernama
