Tennis-Coach Ivanisevic slams Tsitsipas after early Wimbledon exit
(Reuters) -Goran Ivanisevic gave a scathing assessment of Stefanos Tsitsipas, saying he has "never seen a more unprepared player" in his life following the Greek world number 26's opening round exit at Wimbledon.
Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up, was forced to retire from his Wimbledon first-round match while trailing 6-3 6-2 to French qualifier Valentin Royer on Monday due to a back injury.
The 26-year-old, who said he had no answers to his ongoing fitness problems after his elimination, appointed Croatian Ivanisevic as his coach in May after a string of disappointing results at the Grand Slams.
Tsitsipas, a former world number three, has reached only one quarter-final in his last nine Grand Slam tournaments.
"It's simple and it's not simple. I've talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he'll return to where he belongs, because he's too good a player to be out of the top 10," Ivanisevic told Serbian network Sport Klub after Tsitsipas' exit.
"He wants to but he doesn't do anything. All 'I want, I want', but I don't see that progress... I was shocked, I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad."
Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon as a player in 2001, helped Novak Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles before leaving his team in March last year. He then had a short stint with Kazakh world number 11 Elena Rybakina this season.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Walker joined City in 2017 and has made over 200 league appearances for them. But manager Pep Guardiola revealed in January that Walker had asked to leave the club at the end of the season. Walker, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with City, joined AC Milan on loan in January, where he made 11 Serie A appearances. The 35-year-old, who has earned 96 England caps, said he joined Burnley after speaking to their manager Scott Parker, who was his teammate at Spurs. Parker guided Burnley back to the English top-flight with a second-place finish in the Championship. "When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He's done an amazing job," Walker said in a statement. "I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks (like) an exciting squad." Burnley begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Spurs on August 16. (Reuters) -More misery was heaped onto Welsh rugby on Saturday as they lost the first of two tests in Japan for an 18th successive defeat, leaving them ruing missed chances to secure a first win in 18 months. The international at the Mikuni World Stadium in Kitakyushu on Kyushu Island was a good opportunity for the beleaguered side to bring the unwanted streak to an end but Wales let a 12-point halftime lead slip as Japan rallied to snatch a 24-19 victory. "It's very tough to take because we have worked hard. We take nothing away from Japan for the way they played and coming out on top but we had moments to win that game and put it to bed,' said Wales captain Dewi Lake. "We just allowed Japan to play their game in the second half, and they're tough to stop when they're playing at speed,' he added. Wales began brightly and scored three first half tries to go 19-7 up at the break but the heat and humidity caught up with them after the break, when they were on the back foot and put up a nervy showing. Japan scored two unanswered tries in the second half and took the lead with nine minutes left, holding on for a win they celebrated vociferously.
