Soccer-Burnley sign England defender Walker on a two-year deal
(Reuters) -England right-back Kyle Walker has joined Burnley on a two-year deal after his contract with Manchester City expired in the summer, the newly promoted Premier League club said on Saturday.
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Walker joined City in 2017 and has made over 200 league appearances for them. But manager Pep Guardiola revealed in January that Walker had asked to leave the club at the end of the season.
Walker, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with City, joined AC Milan on loan in January, where he made 11 Serie A appearances.
The 35-year-old, who has earned 96 England caps, said he joined Burnley after speaking to their manager Scott Parker, who was his teammate at Spurs.
Parker guided Burnley back to the English top-flight with a second-place finish in the Championship.
"When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He's done an amazing job," Walker said in a statement.
"I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks (like) an exciting squad."
Burnley begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Spurs on August 16.

Cricket-Australia's Green hopes half-century against West Indies can be turning point
(Reuters) -Australia batter Cameron Green hopes his vital half-century on day three of the second test against the West Indies in Grenada can turn around a poor run of form and cement his spot in the top order. Green was promoted to bat at number three for last month's World Test Championship final, his first test in more than a year, but scored only four runs and faced just five balls as Australia were beaten by South Africa. Despite failing to impress, he retained his position for the three-test series against the West Indies, with captain Pat Cummins saying he viewed the 26-year-old all-rounder as a long-term option in the slot. Green had another underwhelming display in Australia's 159-run win in the first test, scoring 18 runs, but contributed 52 on Saturday and combined with Steve Smith for a crucial 93-run partnership that gave the visitors the upper hand in the second match. "You always need innings here and there just to get you back and get you going, hopefully today was certainly one of those. A lot of good things I can get out of just spending time in the middle," Green told reporters. "I think the balls faced has been trending up. The runs haven't been there, but there's certainly little positives I can take out of it. Hopefully, my output can be a little bit better than it has been, but today was a nice sign that things are hopefully trending well. "You all know when you're playing that there's runs that need to be made, certainly when you're batting up the order for Australia. It's a tough game, so being able to bounce back from tough times is equally as important." Australia ended day three on 221/7 with a commanding 254-run lead heading into the final two days of the match, and will look to set an even more daunting target when play resumes later on Sunday. Brighton sign Belgium defender De Cuyper
BRIGHTON & Hove Albion have signed Belgium defender Maxim De Cuyper on a five-year contract from Club Brugge, the Premier League club said on Saturday. De Cuyper, 24, helped Brugge win the Belgian Pro League in 2023-24, and the Belgian Cup last season. He made his Belgium debut in June 2024, and has earned 10 international caps, scoring three goals. "He has a great reputation for creativity and has shown his ability across different positions, although we primarily see him challenging for a left-back spot with us," Brighton coach Fabian Huerzeler said in a statement. Chelsea add Gittens to glut of attacking talent
LONDON: Chelsea added England under-21 international winger Jamie Gittens to their array of attacking talent on Saturday from Borussia Dortmund. The Blues will reportedly pay an initial £48.5 million (US$66 million) for the 20-year-old, who was in Chelsea's academy as a youth player, with a further £3.5 million in add-ons. Gittens eventually moved to Manchester City's academy before signing for Dortmund in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the German giants, scoring 17 goals, 12 of which came in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. "It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea," said Gittens. "I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling." Gittens became Chelsea's fifth signing of another big-spending summer, joining forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr. Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will also join the Premier League giants, in a deal agreed last year, after scoring against Chelsea in Palmerias' 2-1 Club World Cup quarter-final defeat on Friday. Gittens, though, will not be eligible to feature in Chelsea's semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday or the final should the Blues progress. "Jamie Gittens' career exemplifies the development of top talents at BVB," said Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken. "We discovered him very early, signed him almost at no cost, continuously developed him in our youth academy, and provided him with playing time at the highest professional level. "Jamie has repaid that trust with dedication, performance, and goals. His transfer back to his home country would be highly valuable for us." Chelsea are under pressure to recoup some of their transfer spend in sales over the coming months. On Friday, they were fined €31 million by UEFA for two breaches of financial sustainability rules, with a further €60 million suspended as part of a four-year settlement agreement. Moreover, Chelsea, who have qualified for the Champions League, cannot register any new players for European competition unless they earn more from transfer sales than they spend on new signings. — AFP
