Ambedkar varisty NEP-ready even before its launch: VC Lather

Hans Indiaa day ago

New Delhi: Dr B R Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) was implementing several key components of the National Education Policy 2020 long before its formal rollout, Vice Chancellor Anu Singh Lather said, asserting that the institution is 'naturally aligned' with the policy's progressive goals.
In an interview with PTI, Lather also spoke on student politics, infrastructure development, and the university's focus on social equity.
'We were NEP-ready long before the policy even came,' she said, adding that the university had adopted continuous internal assessment and flexible exit options since its inception in 2009.
'While NEP introduced continuous assessment in 2020, we had been practising it for years. Similarly, the multi-exit system was already part of our curriculum under which students could leave after a year with a certificate, two with a diploma, and three with a degree,' she explained.
Lather said AUD was among the first universities in the country to adopt the four-year undergraduate programmes under the National Education Policy (NEP). This year the university is entering the fourth year of the programme receiving a 'positive response' from students so far.
'Though final enrolment figures are awaited, deans have informed us that a significant number of students are inclined to continue into the fourth year,' she said.
She admitted that despite the enthusiasm, infrastructure and space remains a concern 'Yes, we face space and resource constraints, but are actively responding. A new building in Karampura with 18 classrooms and two seminar halls has been completed to accommodate this year's students. We are hopeful for timely funding support from the government,' she said.
The vice chancellor underlined that AUD's educational model is grounded in Dr Ambedkar's vision of equity and social justice.
'Our focus has always been on inclusion, equity, social justice and gender balance. These are not just words but they are reflected in our programmes and pedagogy,' she said. She further highlighted AUD's fee waiver policy, saying that SC, ST, and PwD students receive full fee exemptions from the time of admission -- a practice not common in other institutions.
'We also have a tiered fee-waiver structure based on need for other students. Nearly 58 per cent of our students benefit from financial support and around 42 per cent of our total budget is allocated to student welfare,' she added.
On the contentious issue of student politics, Lather advocated for democratic engagement within academic norms. 'Universities must nurture free thinking. We respect all viewpoints, but any anti-social or anti-national activity has no place on campus,' she said.
While some campuses in Delhi have seen disruptive student protests and politically charged clashes, AUD has opted for a more structured form of engagement.
She noted that AUD follows the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations strictly and elects student representatives democratically, who participate in the university council.
'Students engage with the administration constructively and directly,' she said.

Jawaharlal Nehru University cuts foreign student fees by 80% to attract applicants

All international students will now also pay a one-time registration fee of $ Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit said the move is part of the university's strategy to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes global and inclusive classrooms. The decision follows a detailed study of fee practices at international universities and aims to revive the dwindling number of foreign students on shows that JNU had 152 foreign students in 2020–21, but the number dropped sharply to just 51 in 2023–24. Several students had blamed the high tuition fees for the decline. The number of countries sending students to JNU also fell from 14 to just eight during the same university hopes that with the new affordable fee structure and its academic reputation, it will become a preferred destination once again for students from across the globe.- Ends

Will have to watch this space for next few days: EAM Jaishankar on India-US trade deal

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed optimism that ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States are moving towards a 'successful conclusion', while stressing the importance of finding a 'meeting ground' between the two nations. Speaking at Newsweek's headquarters at One World Trade Center in Manhattan, near the 9/11 Memorial, Jaishankar said: 'You spoke about trade, yes we are in the middle, hopefully, more than the middle, of a very intricate trade negotiation.' 'Obviously, my hope would be that we bring it to a successful conclusion. I cannot guarantee it, because there's another party to that discussion,' he added. His remarks came during a conversation with Newsweek CEO Dev Pragad, as reported by PTI. The minister noted the complexity of the US-India trade talks, while remaining cautiously optimistic about the path ahead: 'And I think we'll have to watch this space for the next few days.' Jaishankar underlined the need for flexibility and understanding from both sides: 'There will have to be give and take. And just like the US or people in the US may have views about India, people in India have views about the US too. And we'll have to find a kind of meeting ground. I believe it's possible.' Responding to a separate question on the state of the India–US negotiations, he said that discussions over the past few months have been 'very, very intense.' 'I can't vouch for which country has had how many rounds, but I suspect we would be among the countries which have done the most,' Jaishankar added. An Indian trade delegation is currently in Washington, DC, where discussions are continuing. Jaishankar acknowledged the technical and detailed nature of the negotiations, particularly with regard to tariff lines and market value projections. 'You are really looking at thousands of lines and doing very intricate trade-offs, both based on what are actually the market values of those lines and what could be the expected market values of those lines. So these are not simple, back-of-the-envelope calculations. Far from it,' he explained. 'So that exercise is going on. If they can get I think a fair balance, you will get an outcome. Obviously, diplomacy is an optimistic profession, so I hope that we will reach there. But things being what they are, it's not done till it's done,' Jaishankar added, according to PTI. During a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also struck a positive tone, confirming that the deal was close. She said US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick was in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump and that the agreements were in the process of being finalised. 'You'll hear from the President and his team, his trade team very soon when it comes to India,' Leavitt said. Reflecting on the broader India–US relationship over the past two and a half decades — from the Bill Clinton administration to the current Trump presidency — Jaishankar said the trend has remained overwhelmingly positive, driven by structural factors. 'The trend line over the last 25 years has been very strong because there are structural factors that work for the relationship such as economics, technology, education, security and energy,' he said. 'All these are today drivers of the relationship,' he added. Jaishankar acknowledged that disagreements and tensions were inevitable in any long-term bilateral relationship. 'Sure, it happens. It won't be for the first time. In fact, at every one of these presidencies, I can think of something which at that time was a friction point,' he said, recalling tensions over the US's proposed sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.
