Who is Darren Espanto? Filipino singer clashing with BTS ARMY over his cover of J-Hope's 'Mona Lisa'

Time of India17-05-2025
Who is BTS? There's really no need for an introduction! The group — and each of its seven members — is wildly popular, even among non-K-pop fans. BTS also has one of the biggest fanbases in the world, known as ARMY, and true to their name, they're always ready to defend Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook.
However, this time around, things were different. Filipino-Canadian singer and performer Darren Espanto has been clashing with BTS ARMY for days. Over what, one may ask? Over the criticism he received for his cover of J-Hope's hit track Mona Lisa.
Who is Darren Espanto?
Darren rose to fame as the runner-up in the first season of The Voice Kids Philippines. Since then, he has built a successful music career, earning recognition both locally and internationally.
Notably, he was the only Filipino guest artist on China's Singer 2019, and he has received praise from global stars like Fantasia Barrino, Nicki Minaj, Ashton Kutcher, and Jessie J for his vocal performances.
Espanto is also known for his admiration of K-pop, particularly BTS. He previously covered BTS' hit song Dynamite in a dance performance shared on his YouTube channel.
So what's happening now?
Recently, Darren Espanto covered J-Hope's new single Mona Lisa, which has been generating buzz among fans. J-Hope described the track as a performance-driven piece with witty and playful lyrics. The song quickly gained traction online, racking up views and sparking a trending dance challenge.
While many enjoyed Darren's cover, one user — reportedly not even an ARMY but as many claimed was a BLACKPINK fan (BLINK) — criticized it harshly, writing, "Dare I say… people who can't sing need to stop covering his songs. Seriously." The quote is not visible currently, due to the user going private.
Netizens — including ARMY — quickly jumped to Darren's defense, praising his vocals. Many pointed out that these covers are often done with minimal rehearsal and shouldn't be taken as full showcases of his ability.
So why did it escalate?
Instead of letting it go, Darren responded directly to the critic, tweeting: "Please consider watching my other vocal performances 'cuz one thing I won't take is someone telling me I 'CAN'T SING'... Attached here are a few of 'em."
Hi, @sieeoun. Please consider watching my other vocal performances cuz one thing I won't take is someone telling me I 'CAN'T SING' 😂 Attached here are a few of 'em:https://t.co/3vjILznFm3https://t.co/L0mDmfi8Eghttps://t.co/Q9HvACRpr1 https://t.co/8l8mIzRDex
Things escalated further when Darren retweeted a Koreaboo article claiming he had "clapped back" at BTS fans online over the criticism. According to many ARMYs, Koreaboo is known for publishing exaggerated, anti-BTS content.
This move didn't sit well with ARMY — many of whom had initially defended him. They questioned why he couldn't take a single comment in stride and stay quiet.
After facing criticism, he seems to have deleted the retweet.
But Darren didn't stop there. When one ARMY quoted him saying, "You still can't sing and ain't nobody watching these videos," he responded:
"Based on my likes, and considering you're interacting with my tweet, apparently a lot of y'all do."
Based on my likes, and considering you're interacting with my tweet, apparently a lot of y'all do. 😅 @lntroegos https://t.co/4FOJJh2SoD
ARMY claps back
At this point, the sympathy ARMY had for Darren began to fade. Fans asked why he was engaging in fan wars online and if chasing likes was his real goal. They also pointed out that most of the engagement he was receiving came from non-BTS K-pop fans who dislike BTS — not because of his talent or vocals.
One said, "Can y'all stop interacting with that guy?? This is literally the most attention he's ever gotten on his account. He barely gets 70 likes unless he's arguing with ARMYs."

Another added, "'Based on my likes' — I'm gonna hold your neck when I say this, Darren. Those are just people who hate 875 (BTS) to the core and would side with anyone just to drag them. And unfortunately for you, those people won't even give you streams or support. They can't even do that for their faves."

One wrote, "A real singer is someone who can perform songs well in any situation and from any perspective — not someone who cherry-picks videos to show off their best side."

Another commented, "This just shows how unprofessional you are."

One user pointed out, "You RT'd a tweet from a random K-pop fan and caused them to harass another artist, and then you RT'd an article full of shameless, nasty comments. But sure — 'it's normal for an artist to defend himself.' And yes, the cover was bad."

Another stated, "I can't believe I was defending your stupid ass yesterday... If you claim to be an artist, you should learn to take criticism. Instead, you RT'd Koreaboo's trash and attracted hate to J-Hope. Being a 'good singer' doesn't make you a good performer. Grow up".

About BTS' reunion
Despite all the drama, ARMY remains focused on what truly matters — the upcoming BTS reunion. With June approaching, fans are eagerly anticipating the moment all seven members will be together again, especially to celebrate the group's debut anniversary.
Jin and J-Hope have already completed their military service, while RM and V are scheduled to be discharged on June 10, 2025. Jimin and Jungkook will follow a day later, on June 11.
SUGA, who is serving through an alternative form of service due to a past shoulder injury, will be the last to return, with his discharge set for June 21, 2025.

This K-Pop band is making waves with sign language

All members — Lee Chan-yeon, Park Hyun-jin, Kim Ji-seok — are hard of hearing Like other K-pop sensations, Big Ocean sings, raps, dances and attracts swooning fans. But this new group's meteoric rise is fueled by a skill it seems no other boy band boasts: signing. Band members — Lee Chan-yeon, 27, Park Hyun-jin, 25, and Kim Ji-seok, 22 — are all deaf or hard of hearing. They use the latest audio technology to help make their music, coordinate their choreography with flashing metronomes and vibrating watches, and incorporate Korean Sign Language into videos and performances. 'Just like divers rely on signs to communicate underwater, we use sign language to convey meaning where sound alone might fall short,' Lee said. 'For us, KSL is not just an element — it's the heart of our performance.' The group released their debut single, 'Glow,' last year, on Korea's Day of People with Disabilities, and they did their first televised performance incorporating KSL. Soon after, they followed up with 'Blow,' a single heavy on English lyrics and American Sign Language. In Sept, they were named Billboard's rookies of the month, and recently, they made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia Entertainment & Sports List. This month, the band performed at an anime festival in Brazil and at a UN tech event in Switzerland before touring Europe for the second time since spring. Their first American tour starts later this month. Big Ocean has 995,000 followers on Instagram and more than 696,000 on TikTok. Fans, who call themselves 'Pados' after Korean word for wave, are devoted, and many are learning sign languages from the band, which makes numerous tutorials. But fame was never assured, said Haley Cha, CEO of Parastar Entertainment, Big Ocean's management company. Even the members sometimes questioned their dream, Cha added. They had alternate careers, and it was not always clear to them or to others what they could achieve in music. Cha said she used a variety of tactics to help them visualise stardom, including taking images of established K-pop idols and replacing the faces with those of the trio. Some in the deaf community, however, worry about the framing of the band, particularly for hearing audiences, as an inspirational narrative about 'overcoming' disability that could undermine deaf identity. For their part, the trio's members seem delighted they inspire people and heartened by the world's response.

Rekha pushes for cultural unity via art and festivals

New Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta announced a series of initiatives on Sunday aimed at promoting cultural integration and national unity in Delhi. These initiatives include the inclusion of local artists from various states in regional festivals, promotion of non-Hindi languages among children in Delhi and the launch of a Student Exchange Programme with other states. Gupta stated that the Department of Art, Culture and Languages can play a vital role in this endeavour by broadening the scope of its programmes and activities. "The department must take initiatives beyond designated locations and bring them to the general public to enhance public participation," she said. She directed officials to ensure that regional festivals celebrated in Delhi include artists from the respective states, as this would help generate greater interest in these events. CM also stated that efforts will be made to explore possibilities for teaching non-Hindi languages to children in Delhi, enabling them to understand the social and cultural identities of other states. These directions were given during a recent meeting with the Department of Art, Culture and Languages, which minister Kapil Mishra also attended. The objective of the meeting was to enrich Delhi's cultural landscape and to involve all sections of society. Highlighting Delhi's diverse population, she emphasised the growing celebration of regional festivals. "Delhi is not merely the capital city but also a reflection of the country's cultural identity," she said. "We want the art and culture of various states to reach every street and for every individual to feel connected to it." She added that theatre and folk arts are powerful tools for spreading awareness and information, often more effectively than other forms of communication.

Badshah asks his dad to break down his outfit—the hilarious response will leave you in splits

Rapper Badshah recently shared a BTS glimpse with his fans that has gone viral on social media. The rapper asks his dad for a "drip check" in a now-viral Instagram reel, but instead of receiving praise, he receives a dose of traditional dad-level transparency. No matter how well-known you are, a desi father will always keep you grounded. This is shown when Badshah boldly displays his attire and requests a style breakdown, and his father hilariously mocks every piece. Watch the video here: "How much do you think this coat cost?" Badshah asks as the camera pans in on his father's outfit. 'I think this is at least ten years old,' his father says without hesitation. His father gives the ideal response when Badshah presses once more, "How much did it cost?" "Someone gave it," he says without missing a beat. The rapper continues by repeating the question while pointing to his shoes. In keeping with his tradition, his father remarks, "Those are from your wedding—cost around ₹4,000 back then." When Badshah finally inquires about the tie, he is met with the final zinger: "Even this is also given by someone." The internet is in splits as the entire moment is delivered with the ideal balance of fatherly sass and sarcastic humor. On the work front, Badshah is preparing for The Unfinished Tour 2025, which will take him across the United States, with stops scheduled in Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, and other cities. He is also preparing to make his debut in a fashion show, which will be a significant milestone for Indian representation in international fashion. Following the success of his album Ek Tha Raja, which received over 350 million streams, Badshah is currently working independently on a new hip-hop album.
