Himachal Pradesh governor Shiv Pratap Shukla expressed dissatisfaction over lack of government rehabilitation centres while questioning political will to fight the menace. (HT File) 'There is only one Red Cross-run drug rehabilitation centre in Kullu. We have been hearing about identification of land for setting up a centre in Sirmaur but nothing is moving on ground. This shows the seriousness of the government.' Shukla warned that if prompt action is not taken, the state could face a crisis similar to Punjab, often referred to as 'Udta Punjab.' The governor pointed out that the Himachal government has not been proactive in setting up rehabilitation centres. 'The state government should have moved forward to open rehab centres. For a long time, they have been saying that land has been identified and funds have been allocated, but nothing concrete has been done. If this situation continues, Himachal could turn into 'Udta Himachal,' and our generations will suffer,' he warned. 'The government of India has decided to include the efforts being made in Himachal Pradesh against drug abuse in its national programmes. This is both the inspiration of the Prime Minister and my own resolve to make Himachal drug-free.' He added that Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced that these initiatives will be adopted nationwide. 'A proposal named 'Kashi Sankalp' has been passed, which will now go across the country, and I am pleased that the programmes initiated by the governor of Himachal Pradesh are part of this,' Shukla noted. The governor highlighted various initiatives launched and said that students are now required to sign a pledge during admissions, declaring they will not indulge in drug abuse, and the administration reserves the right to take disciplinary action if they are caught. 'Awareness is rising. Parents who earlier ignored their children's drug use are now proactive. Panchayats are informing police about suppliers, and the number of NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases has increased significantly,' Shukla stated. According to official data, NDPS cases in the state have increased from 500 in 2012 to over 2,200 in 2023. Citing a survey of 1,150 inmates, Shukla revealed that drug abuse is highest among individuals aged 15–30 years. 'Awareness is the key to reducing demand. If Punjab's government is taking steps, Himachal must act seriously,' he asserted. Shukla also urged all political leaders to unite against drug abuse. 'I have written to deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, education minister Rohit Thakur, and other ministers, requesting them to raise awareness and take action at all levels,' he said. Rave parties in Himachal Taking strict note of the rave parties, Shukla said, 'I will call the DGP and will inquire how such parties are taking place. This undermines the efforts being taken to fight drugs.'

ONGC to fund cancer infrastructure in three hospitals

Kakinada: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has agreed to provide financial support for the installation of advanced radiation machines for cancer treatment at government hospitals in Kakinada, Guntur, and Kadapa districts. The initiative, costing Rs 48 crore, will be funded under ONGC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The decision was taken following a meeting between Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and a delegation comprising Dr P Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, and Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Babu. During the meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, the leaders sought central assistance in strengthening the fight against cancer in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking to 'The Hans India', MP Satish Babu said that the proposal involved the procurement of three state-of-the-art radiation therapy machines, each worth approximately Rs 16 crore. Minister Puri responded positively and initiated discussions with ONGC officials, leading to the company's commitment to provide the equipment. 1 2 3 Shimla: Raising serious concern over the lack of drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in Himachal Pradesh, given the steep increase in the number of drug dependent patients, governor Shiv Pratap Shukla warned that if the state govt fails to act swiftly, the Himalayan state could become 'Udta Himachal' like its neighbour 'Udta Punjab' in the next five years. "I am feeling a little hesitant, and despite repeated appeals, nothing is being done as there is only one rehabilitation centre of Red Cross in Kullu in the entire state," said Shukla. The state govt must have definitely moved forward to open various rehabilitation centres, but the only statement that comes is that the state govt is identifying land in Sirmaur district to establish a drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, he added. The governor stated that if we fail to take collective action today, it will spoil the entire generation. Addressing media persons at the Raj Bhawan, Shukla underlined that compared to the last decade, there has been an increase of 340% in the cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this decade. Quoting official figures, he said that the NDPS cases have seen a steep hike in Himachal, from nearly 500 in the year 2012 to over 2,200 in 2023. The governor also cited a survey on 1,150 jail inmates by the drug de-addiction centres, and mentioned that the highest number of drug dependents were in the age bracket of 15-30 years. Mentioning his recent tour to Varanasi for a govt-organised 'Nasha Mukt Yuva, Viksit Bharat' programme, Shukla added that there, 'Kashi Sankalp' has been passed, which will now go across the country and it also includes various steps initiated by the Himachal governor. Highlighting his resolve to make Himachal drug-free, Shukla stated that a booklet 'Pradhan Mantri Ki Prerna, Rajyapal Ka Sankalp, Himachal Pradesh Nashamukt' has been compiled about various initiatives taken in the hill state. On the issue of the state govt seeking central govt's permission to use forest land for the rehabilitation of monsoon disaster-affected people, Shukla said, "I don't agree with the CM's statement that if Jairam Thakur is a BJP leader and there is a BJP-led govt at the Centre, so Jairam ji should go and talk to the central govt. Why did the CM not take Thakur along when he went to meet the Union home minister?" Shukla reiterated that this is the chief minister's job and not Thakur's, and if the state govt takes up this issue with the Centre, it will definitely extend a helping hand. The governor added that while BJP leaders like JP Nadda and Jairam Thakur are meeting Union ministers seeking disaster relief from the Centre, it is the state govt's responsibility to ensure land acquisition and to implement various welfare schemes for the disaster-affected people. "The Centre will not bring the land; the state must act swiftly," emphasised Shukla. MSID:: 122884957 413 |
