Catch 'Puppet Power', the national tour by comedy duo Conrad Koch and Chester Missing, is coming to the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino for a limited run from July 10.
Ahead of the show, 'Independent Media Lifestyle' caught up with Koch to unpack his journey in the industry, especially with his socio-political commentary that has left Mzansi in stitches.
When asked how the evolution of current affairs-driven comedy influenced his latest show, "Puppet Power", he said: 'With the rise of TikTok and other high-reach, high-impact social media, we as comedians have tools we never dreamed of.
'And in this watershed moment in history as far as conversations on race and colonialism globally and in SA, and the influence of the billionaire class turning even Donald Trump and Cyril Ramaphosa into puppets of sorts, the question of power, and in particular 'Puppet Power' has never been more relevant.'
He was then asked about what he enjoyed most about leveraging the power of laughter to offset the heaviness of real life.
He said: 'South Africans have survived the unimaginable, and having an opportunity to poke fun at the systems that made that happen, to say what many would like to say, via jokes, is a privilege I both do not take lightly and also approach with extreme silliness.
'The reaction and support Chester and I get from ordinary South Africans is incredible and deeply appreciated.'

Chester Missing and Conrad Koch bring back the funny.

He confessed that he never envisioned Chester achieving such widespread acclaim when he first brought him to life.
'Never in a million years did I imagine I'd have a puppet who would be allowed to interview an actual president. It's nuts,' he laughed.
As for the new puppets he will be unleashing in his new show, he shared: 'I am super excited for audiences to meet the new characters in this show. I have a celebrity chef rat who used to cook for Donald Trump. He's delightful and new.
"My high school teacher, Mr Dixon, is easily Chester's match for comedy clout on stage, although, with Chester's huge social media presence, it may take a while to catch up. Don't tell the puppets I said that.'
When asked about the '99% silliness with a dash of satirical truth' in his press release, he explained: 'In the past, my shows were very political, with the likes of Pieter-Dirk Uys shaping my vision.
"These days, I have made the shows far more accessible - your 12-year-old will love the show, while still saying what needs to be said about South Africa and global affairs.
'We go from nailing these fake Afrikaner refugees to turning someone in the audience into a talking dinosaur, and more. South Africans want to laugh. So laughter is what they will get.'
Having kicked off his tour in a few smaller rooms in Cape Town, Koch also recently received a Standard Bank Ovation Award for it at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

Bryanston Sports Club pits their best potjies forward

There was no winter chill strong enough to dampen the spirit at Bryanston Sports Club on June 28, when locals gathered for a community potjie afternoon. The club grounds came alive with the comforting smells of meat, vegetables, and spices bubbling away in cast-iron pots, while old friends and new faces swapped stories around the fires. Dorian Gordon, one of the competitors, said: 'It's not really about who makes the best potjie; it's about sharing a meal and feeling like you belong.' The turnout was one of the biggest, and the community kept the spirit alive throughout the cold day. SA Padel Invitational brings padel's biggest stars to SA shores

South Africa is swinging open the doors to the world of padel with its first-ever South African Padel Invitational, a milestone the organisers say will inspire a new generation of local players. Announced at an exclusive launch event on July 10 at Wanderers, the invitational will see 12 of the world's top-ranked padel players competing on local courts over five weeks, giving fans rare front-row access to the fast-growing sport. Mohammed Saloojee, from the SA Padel Invitational organising committee, said: 'Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we launch the South African Invitational, for the first time on the African continent.' Also read: Discovery Padel Courts hosts exciting event for padel beginners He added that they are bringing Artur Oruelo, Augustin Tapia, and 17-time world champion Fernando 'Bela' Belasteguín, among other superstars. 'This is more than just a tournament; it's a statement that we belong on the world stage.' Padel, which combines elements of tennis and squash, is one of the world's fastest-growing sports, with a diverse player base in South Africa. Sarfraz Bismilla pointed out that it is fantastic that they have got children as young as 14 playing with adults in their late 60s. 'The age group averages about 32, almost evenly split between men and women. It breaks the boundaries we see in other sports.' Also read: Padel sport launched at Morningside Country Club The invitational will run like a mini-world cup, with group stages, nail-biting quarterfinals, and a high-stakes final. Fans can tune in via livestream to put their questions directly to the stars. Mohammed Majam, also on the organising team, said choosing a venue large enough was a challenge. 'There was no indoor venue that could hold this, so, it's an honour to host it on the sacred grounds of our biggest local facility. This isn't just about sport; it's a weekend festival with DJs, entertainment, and the world's best padel talent.' Event details: August 15 to 17 at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Where it all started: 'Do it lady!' Renshaw's first skit is the now-viral skit that features the memorable line, "Do it lady!", where Chit's coworkers are confused when he writes "Do it lady!" in a birthday card intended for a colleague's surprise office party. Despite their confusion, Chit attempts to convince everyone that it is a genuine catchphrase. What they do not understand is that the phrase is actually Chit's way of saying 'You go, girl!' or 'Yes, girl!' 'Black purse' The second viral skit that left the internet in stitches is the 'Black purse' skit where Chit walks in the office and asks: 'Is there a black person in here?' which again left his co-workers confused because his black co-worker, Linda is in the room along with the other two white co-workers. Only to find out that he actually meant 'Is there a black purse in here?' as he sees it and reaches for it when Linda is about to confront him for what he is saying. The internet loves Chit Renshaw and Kennedy continue to make other comedic skits which are being loved by the internet just as much as the viral two skits and Renshaw shared on his TikTok bio that new episodes of 'The Chit Show' will be dropped weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The internet has been loving Chit, and many have shared videos saying that the catchphrase 'Do it lady!' has been their favourite phrase to randomly say out loud, or they have now added it to their vocabulary.
