OPEN// PM: Awqaf Ministry's new digital platform seeks to renew foundations of religious discourse

Middle East20-06-2025
CAIRO, June 18 (MENA) - The Awqaf Ministry's new digital platform, a purely national project, aims to contribute to renewing the foundations and pillars of religious discourse in a modern interactive manner that keeps pace with contemporary digital technologies, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said.
The project is part of the state's digital transformation strategy, Madbouli added during a news briefing held in the presence of the Awqaf minister, who announced the official launch of the new platform, following the Cabinet weekly meeting on Wednesday.
The premier described the new digital platform as a significant shift in improving the ministry's performance and enhancing its services, highlighting the diversity of topics and richness of services on the ministry's platform, which would contribute to advancing human building efforts in the new republic at the intellectual and spiritual levels.
Meanwhile, Awqaf Minister Osama el Azhari said the launch of the digital platform coincides with the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, observed annually on June 18.
The platform is based on the ministry's four-part strategy, which focuses on confronting religious and irreligious extremism and contributing to character building and civilizational revival, the minister pointed out.
The new platform features three main phases, the first of which was launched today, with an unlimited room for scale-up.
The world's largest religious platform is meant to achieve all its milestones up to sustainability by mid-2027, the minister said.
The first phase includes 60,000 pages, making it the biggest religious platform in the world.
By the end of all milestones, the platform is meant to hit a staggering count of several million pages.
The platform approaches religious issues from various angles, including legal, linguistic, philosophical, sociological, medical, historical, and other perspectives.
It adopts a moderate line of thought that seeks to promote the true, great values of Islam. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and chatbot features are to be expected as part of the operational and interactive functions of phase three of the platform.
The platform also includes a special section for an initiative dubbed "Correct Your Concepts," a strategic scientific project for reshaping consciousness, reviving right concepts, and dispelling misconceptions, to build a free, believing, rational human being who can contribute to civilization-building, the minister said.
This initiative will be launched next week under the auspices of the prime minister, Azhari noted. (MENA)

Egyptian president follows up on initiatives to counter extremist thought

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Monday reviewed the Ministry of Awqaf's (Religious Endowments) efforts to renew religious discourse and combat extremism, his office said in a statement. The president met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Awqaf Minister Usama Al-Azhari, who presented a report on the ministry's initiatives. Al-Azhari briefed the president on the 'Correct Your Concepts' awareness initiative, which he described as a cornerstone of the ministry's strategy to build enlightened religious and societal awareness. The initiative aims to correct misconceptions and counter forms of non-religious extremism that contribute to the decline of values and ethics in society. President Al-Sisi directed the continuous follow-up of the initiative's implementation mechanisms to ensure its national objectives are met, in coordination with state institutions and civil society. The president also followed up on the latest developments in formulating a strategic vision for renewing religious discourse. Al-Azhari explained that the strategy consists of four main pillars: confronting religious extremism in all its forms, confronting all forms of non-religious extremism represented by the decline of values and negative behaviours, human development, and civilization building. The minister presented the 'Renewal of Religious Discourse' document, which includes executive measures for each of the previous pillars, aiming to formulate a rational religious discourse that promotes values of peace, security, and tolerance. Al-Azhari also presented the ministry's new digital platform, which is part of its efforts to counter extremist thought and enhance awareness. The platform includes various sections covering different aspects of Islamic and encyclopedic sciences, as well as initiatives to rationalise behaviour and address negative phenomena in society such as bullying, harming people with disabilities, drug abuse, and vandalism of public property. The minister also discussed future plans to develop the platform, including converting its content into visual and audio formats for social media and utilising artificial intelligence technologies. The meeting also covered the latest developments in the 'Al-Aswat' (The Voices) competition, which aims to discover the best voices in Quranic recitation, religious invocations, and chanting. The Egyptian President directed continued coordination with the relevant authorities to enhance the capabilities of imams, qualify distinguished personnel capable of facing challenges and improving the level of religious discourse, and develop communication mechanisms, especially in combating extremist thought and consolidating awareness of contemporary issues.

OPEN// PM reviews steps to establish central unit for state-owned companies

NEW ALAMEIN, Egypt, July 28 (MENA) – Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli affirmed that the government's submission of a bill to Parliament to establish a central unit for monitoring and regulating state-owned companies reflects Egypt's commitment to enhancing the governance and management of public assets. The initiative aims to boost efficiency and maximize returns in line with international best practices and the State Ownership Policy (SOP) document adopted in recent years. Madbouli's remarks came during a meeting held Monday evening in New Alamein to review the implementation steps for setting up the new unit. The meeting was attended by Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk, and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan el-Khatib, who joined via video conference. The prime minister noted that the session was intended to review and initiate the executive steps necessary to establish the unit, following the Parliament's approval of the draft law regulating aspects of state ownership in companies. He underscored the unit's pivotal role, alongside the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and the Initial Public Offering (IPO) Unit, in managing this portfolio. Madbouli explained that the new unit will maintain a comprehensive database of state-owned assets, especially those slated for private-sector engagement, and will oversee all related decisions and procedures. It will also be responsible for implementation, in coordination with relevant ministries. Its decisions will be binding on all government entities to ensure the consistent and effective application of state asset policies. He added that this move represents a significant institutional milestone in public asset management and reflects the government's drive for greater transparency and fiscal discipline. It is expected to improve public spending efficiency and attract further investment while preserving state ownership of strategic assets. Participating ministers expressed their full support, affirming that the unit will serve as a key coordination mechanism across government agencies and play a vital role in restructuring underutilized assets to ensure their optimal use. Cabinet spokesman Mohamed el-Homsani said that the meeting also highlighted the importance of preparing the unit's organizational structure and developing a comprehensive work plan, pending the final approval of the law by Parliament. This step follows the government's earlier decision to transfer ownership of several companies and assets to the TSFE to boost returns and expand private-sector and investor participation, while safeguarding state control over strategic assets. OPEN// PM reviews preparations for launching 'National Economic Development Narrative'

NEW ALAMEIN, Egypt, July 28 (MENA) – Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli stressed the importance of the "National Narrative for Economic Development," describing it as a key document, reference framework, and practical roadmap for the new economic model Egypt seeks to implement. He said the narrative aims to consolidate various policies, strategies, and targets into a unified platform that guides the government's current direction and activities. These include the government action program, strategies for foreign direct investment (FDI), industrial development, foreign trade, and the National Employment Strategy, all in line with Egypt Vision 2030. The initiative is also intended to further Egypt's economic reform agenda through greater engagement with the private sector, international institutions, and global development partners. Madbouli made the remarks during a meeting on Monday with Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, held to follow up on the progress of launching the "National Narrative for Economic Development: Policies Supporting Growth and Employment." The prime minister praised the efforts made by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, in coordination with all relevant ministries and entities, to finalize the narrative. He underlined that the document will serve as a roadmap for Egypt's economic development priorities in the coming years, and thanked all those involved in its preparation. During the meeting, Madbouli reviewed the key components of the narrative, which is designed to support Egypt's economic reform trajectory and address national objectives amid regional and global challenges. For her part, Mashat affirmed that, under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's directives and with the continued supervision of the prime minister, the narrative is now in its final stages of preparation. She noted that it has been developed in full coordination with concerned national stakeholders to provide a comprehensive framework and actionable program that takes into account regional and international economic dynamics, while capitalizing on Egypt's considerable economic potential to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth. Mashat explained that the narrative is built around five core pillars: strengthening macroeconomic stability; attracting FDI; promoting industrial development and foreign trade; enhancing labor market efficiency and resilience; and advancing regional planning to support economic growth. She added that the narrative builds on the government's structural reform program launched in March 2024, which has enabled Egypt to overcome key economic challenges and utilize its competitive advantages in multiple sectors. The minister also noted that the narrative includes a set of quantitative targets translating structural reforms into macroeconomic objectives, with estimates extending through 2030 and long-term ambitions for 2050. These targets cover areas such as economic growth, job creation, FDI inflows, industrial localization, and other national priorities, she added. Mashat said that the government continues to closely monitor regional and global developments to assess their impact on Egypt's economic trajectory. She stressed that the narrative has been designed as a flexible, adaptive document capable of being updated as needed to keep public policies aligned with Egypt's development goals.
