Salt Lake City leaders, Black community mark Juneteenth, raise controversial new city flag
The theme of Tuesday's gathering at the Salt Lake City-County Building was 'And Still We Rise,' which Betty Sawyer, one of the speakers, said is pertinent today. Sawyer serves as head of the Ogden branch of the NAACP and was instrumental in the passage of legislation by Utah lawmakers in 2022, making Juneteenth, June 19, a state holiday.
The theme was selected to underscore the importance of 'not getting overwhelmed by circumstances, good, bad or indifferent, but to recognize and embrace the resilience that we have, the tenacity that we have and, most importantly, the love that we have for one another,' she said. Together, 'when we decide to do something, there's no stopping us.'
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall also addressed the gathering, which drew around 100 people, noting the controversial new city flag that city officials approved last month, which incorporates the blue and red Juneteenth flag. HB77, approved by state lawmakers earlier this year, in effect prohibits the display of flags perceived as political at schools and local government offices. City officials added a sego lily flower to the Juneteenth flag and adopted it as an official city flag on May 6 to circumvent the law.
'This is what determination, partnership, creativity looks like,' Mendenhall said, referencing the new flag. 'Our values aren't changing. Diversity, equity, inclusion are our values. They're American values. That will never change.'
Mendenhall's remarks drew applause from those on hand, but Gov. Spencer Cox blasted the flag when asked about it separately at his regularly monthly press conference later on Tuesday. In approving the Juneteenth-inspired flags last month, the City Council also adopted gay pride and transgender flags with sego lilies on them as official city flags, to get around HB77.
'They're dumb flags, and it was a dumb bill,' Cox said, noting that other racial and ethnic groups are left out. 'It's ridiculous. I feel bad for the Japanese Americans. I feel bad for the Polynesian Americans. I mean, who are we leaving out here? I'm sure they feel great that they got around this dumb law, and they did it with dumb flags. The whole thing is dumb.'
The tone at Tuesday's ceremony, however, remained upbeat with a measure of defiance.
She doesn't know if the Juneteenth flag will require a sego lily on it in years to come so that it can be flown outside the Salt Lake City-County Building, 'but this city's committed forever,' Mendenhall said. The Juneteenth flag, she went on, 'celebrates freedom, a new horizon, and it honors the bloodshed by the enslaved people who were oppressed for hundreds of years.'
Though meant to celebrate the end of slavery, Juneteenth more specifically marks June 19, 1865. That's the day when Union troops reached Galveston, Texas — months after the end of the U.S. Civil War — to let some 250,000 African Americans know they were free. Some leaders in the Black community refer to Juneteenth, a federal and state holiday, as their second Independence Day, after July 4.
'The legacy of Juneteenth reminds us to never give up hope in uncertain times, to remember the resilience of generations that came before us and to keep these important stories and lived experiences alive, both today and for our shared future,' said Utah Rep. Sandra Collins, D-Salt Lake City. She sponsored the 2022 legislation making Juneteenth a state holiday in Utah.
Numerous activities are scheduled around Utah in the days to come to mark Juneteenth.
Ogden will host a Juneteenth Freedom Festival at the Ogden Amphitheater from Friday, June 13, to Sunday, June 15, featuring musical performances, a car show and much more. It's organized by Project Success, led by Sawyer.
The city of Millcreek is hosting a Juneteenth celebration on June 18 from 6-10 p.m. at Millcreek Common.
Salt Lake Juneteenth will be held June 19 at The Gateway in Salt Lake City from noon to 10 p.m.
The Juneteenth Healing and Reconciliation Vigil will be held June 28 at the International Peace Gardens at Jordan Park in Salt Lake City from 4-6 p.m.

Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) on Wednesday discussed the ongoing uproar over files related to an investigation on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and President Trump's recent pushback, saying it is 'not a good moment.' 'This is not a good moment. And I think that, you know, so I'm open if the President has information that we do not have, I want to hear it,' Burlison told NewsNation's Blake Burman on 'The Hill.' The five included Reps. Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Jeff Van Drew (N.J.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Burlison and Tim Burchett (Tenn.). 'The American people deserve full transparency,' Van Drew said on the social platform X. 'I will never protect pedophiles or the elites and their circles,' Greene said in her own post.

As much as President Trump and the White House would like everyone to shut up and move on from the dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, a new poll shows that the scandal isn't going away. Rasmussen polling this week shows Trump has suffered a sharp drop in approval over the period of the Epstein brouhaha, plummeting from a plus-4 popularity rating to a negative-4 in three weeks. The poll of 1,164 likely voters conducted on July 8-10 found that just 21% believe the Trump FBI and DOJ are telling the truth about Epstein, who was found hanged in his jail cell in 2019. Advertisement While FBI Director Kash Patel and deputy Dan Bongino insist that Epstein committed suicide, only 31% of voters believe them. 'You can't just say 'Trust me, bro,' ' says Mark Mitchell, Rasmussen's head pollster. 'Roughly two-thirds of every political category — 68% of Democrats, 66% of Republicans and 69% of unaffiliated voters — reject the idea that the Epstein case is closed and instead believe that there are dozens of powerful and wealthy offenders who need to face justice.' But all those supporters who chanted 'lock her up' at his 2016 rallies were disappointed when he broke his promise to investigate 'Crooked' Hillary Clinton and instead offered her grace, saying 'leave her alone' and praising her as 'strong and smart.' Trump supporters grudgingly accepted it as a one-off sacrifice for the good of national unity. Advertisement Fat lot of good that did! What ensued was the Clinton campaign-inspired Russia hoax, a weaponized FBI and CIA targeting Trump and his allies for the next eight years and an array of fake controversies peddled to an all too eager media. Three months later, crickets. There has been zero accountability for the FBI targeting traditional Catholics as incipient domestic terrorists. The 'Radical Traditionalist Catholics' memo of 2023 was not an isolated error as former Director Chris Wray claimed. Sen. Chuck Grassley has revealed it was an action item pumped out to more than 1,000 FBI employees over multiple field offices. Meanwhile, the handful of valiant whistleblowers who exposed the corruption, like Steve Friend and Garret O'Boyle, have been abandoned by Patel, who once posed as their champion. The way to solve the disillusionment embodied in the Epstein furor is not pumping out Truth Socials calling the whole thing a hoax. It's not telling people there's nothing there. It's not releasing a doctored video of Epstein's jail cell with one minute missing — or as the lefty rag Wired claims, '2 minutes and 53 seconds.' That just added gasoline to the fire. As distasteful and time-consuming as it for a White House busy with important matters of state, someone has to grab hold of this whirling dervish and fast. Already you can bet devious Dems are concocting some new version of the 'pee tape' to bring down Trump, or at least depress his poll numbers so they win the midterms. 'No client list' Alan Dershowitz, Jeffrey Epstein's former lawyer, claims there is no 'client list' and that courts have sealed all FBI interview records of alleged victims. 'I know who they are. They don't include any current officeholders.' People have confused Epstein's 'client list' with his little black book — hundreds of names of all the rich and famous people he ever met. Dershowitz was falsely accused of being an abuser and had to fight to clear his name. But it's a pity that Dershowitz-style clarity has not come from the FBI, DOJ or White House, all of which appear to have been caught flat-footed by a conspiracy that MAGA influencers have been whipping up for a decade. One communications expert in the administration believes the FBI should release a detailed timeline and flowchart of everything known about the Epstein case and hold a press conference to answer every question. If it's really some Russiagate-style plot, then expose it. If the FBI or DOJ botched the initial Epstein investigation or acted corruptly in the sweetheart plea deal, expose it. The CIA should say whether Epstein was an intelligence asset. But beyond that tawdry case, there has to be accountability for the deep state witch hunts against Trump and his supporters. And where is the accountability on the COVID lies and censorship? Heads on pikes, nothing less.

Army vet calls for investigation after being detained for three days in ICE raid
A U.S. Army veteran who was detained during the massive immigration raid in Ventura County last week said Wednesday that he wants 'a full investigation' into how he could have been held behind bars for three days despite being an American citizen. 'What happened to me wasn't just a mistake,' he said in a written statement. 'It was a violation of my civil rights. It was excessive force.' At a news conference Wednesday, Retes, who is 25 and the father of two children, said he had been on his way to his job as a security guard at Glass House farms on July 10 when 'I got caught in the middle between protesters and [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents.' Retes had been focused on his three-year-old daughter's upcoming birthday party and didn't realize that Glass House, one of the largest legal cannabis operations in California, was being raided by scores of heavily armed immigration agents. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security later said they detained more than 360 people in the raid, including numerous undocumented immigrants who had been charged with crimes. As agents moved through the company's greenhouses, many workers fled in a panic. One worker, Jaime Alanis Garcia, 56, died after he fell three stories trying to evade capture. Protesters and family members of workers, meanwhile, massed at the Glass House gates on Laguna Road, squaring off against federal agents, who deployed chemical agents and less-lethal ammunition. Retes said he had worked at Glass House as a contractor for the security firm Securitas for seven months. He said he unwittingly headed straight into that melee as he drove down Laguna Road to report for his afternoon shift. 'I had no clue about it,' he said. 'When I pulled up, I saw all the cars, I saw all the traffic, and I was just trying to make my way through.' He did not get to work. Instead, he said, agents smashed his car window, pepper sprayed him and dragged him out at gunpoint. 'I let ICE agents know that I'm a U.S. Citizen, that I'm American,' he said. 'They didn't care. They never told me my charges. They sent me away.' Retes, who served in Iraq, said agents never told him why he was being detained at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles. He was packed off, without a phone call, access to a lawyer, or even a way to clean the pepper spray residue off his clothes and face, he said. While in custody, Retes said, he became so distressed that he was put on suicide watch, but he was still not allowed to contact an attorney. His wife and sister meanwhile gave tearful interviews to local television stations, pleading for information as to his whereabouts. 'We don't know what to do, we're just asking to let my brother go. He's a U.S. citizen. He didn't do anything wrong. He's a veteran, disabled citizen. It says it on his car,' his sister Destinee Majana told ABC-7 last week. 'I just don't know where he's at. I've been up since 6 a.m. trying to call the sheriff's, the police department, Oxnard, Camarillo, Ventura,' added his wife, Guadalupe Torres. 'They say they don't know.' Finally, on Sunday, Retes said, guards came to his cell and told him he was going to be released. 'An officer walked me downstairs,' he recalled. 'I signed a paper to get my stuff back. That was it. They let me go.' In a statement, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said: 'George Retes was arrested and has been released. He has not been charged. The US Attorney's Office is reviewing his case, along with dozens of others, for potential federal charges related to the execution of the federal search warrant in Camarillo.' Retes said he is home in Ventura now, spending time with his children and 'enjoying being free. I took that for granted.' He recovered his car, which he said still has a smashed window, numerous dents, and a sharp tang of pepper spray. But he said he plans to file a lawsuit against the government over the way he was treated. 'What they did isn't right,' he said. 'I'm here speaking for everyone who doesn't have a chance to speak.'
