Columbus Sliders Making Moves And Subs Shining At Major League Pickleball San Clemente
Major League Pickleball (MLP), presented by DoorDash, rolled right into its sixth event of the 10-event season on the heels of last week's PPA Orange County Cup on the grounds of Life Time San Clemente for a critical mid-season match featuring some of the 'middle class' of the Premier League battling for playoff positioning, along with the entire slate of Challenger teams.
Key Links for tracking the event this weekend, which featured livestreams from the two primary courts at the facility on MLP's YouTube channel and on PickleballTV.com.
Transaction Recap
Ahead of the weekend, the following transactions were announced:
- MLP held its second Premier Waiver period (and only Challenger Waiver period) in the weeks leading up to this event, which featured a slew of moves more completely covered in this space earlier this month.
- Just after the Waiver period, we saw three significant trades:
1. St Louis acquired Judit Castillo from SoCal for Cailyn Campbell. Campbell immediately moved into SoCal's starting lineup in San Clemente and went 3-7 in her first MLP Action. Not bad for a 15-yr old.
2. New Jersey gets Mari Humberg back, acquiring her from DC for Gecheva and cash. I'm not sure New Jersey played this player moving gambit well; if their intent was to get Humberg back, they should have just dropped her and re-bid for her in waivers. Instead, they have to go half the season undermanned (so to speak) and are unlikely to regain a playoff-bye spot at this point.
3. Carolina gets Tuiotenoa, Texas gets Christian & cash. This is an interesting move by two teams idle this past weekend, but which may have decent ramifications for Carolina, Ben Johns' performance, and the tail end of the playoff race. Johns and Tuiotenoa were teammates on the strong 2023 Seattle Pioneers team, which won two of the three MLP events and made the Super Premier final before falling. Carolina has a long way to go, being dead last in the standings, but with a dominant weekend could push their way up the rankings.
News and Noteworthy
Ahead of the event, here's some news and noteworthy items for MLP.
- The major organizational news was the general announcement by UPA that they are going to a prize money-based model going forward. MLP will see massive payday increases as detailed in the link here, which include an amazing $250k payday PER PLAYER to the MLP season winning team. I'm presuming we will see some major energy shifts in the league starting in 2026 with so much on the line.
With all that said, let's recap MLP San Clemente:

Player Standings/Stats Analysis for the Weekend:
Unfortunately, the resource we depend on for individual player analysis hasn't been updated in time for this publication.
What did we learn this weekend?
What were our top three Takeaways from the competition this weekend?
Media Pick' Em Contest Update
MLP Super-Fan Matty Pickles (aka Matt Klitch) runs a season-long Media MLP Pick'em Contest on Twitter, where all the pundits in the sport are participating.
Summary for San Clemente: Klitch has introduced some new rules, which have leveled the playing field for sure. I went 5-3 for the weekend but somehow retain my top spot in the season long pundit competition.
Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule, we're going right into MLP Event No. 7 next weekend, as the whole tour has to make a cross-country trip in just a couple of days to hold MLP NYC on the Holman Ice rink in Central Park.
All match stats quoted in this article are courtesy of PickleWave. Visit picklewave.com for the premier source of Pro Pickleball data, including match replays, highlights, stats, and discussion. PickleWave has more than 22,000 matches in its database across all the pro tours.
Also, a great thanks to The Dink's Erik Tice, who maintains a fantastic MLP detailed data breakdown and makes it publicly available at this Google XLS link. Tice's data has proved invaluable this year as MLP does not make match data available at this detailed level at present.

Raúl Jiménez's goal sends Mexico to 12th CONCACAF Gold Cup final with 1-0 win over Honduras
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Raúl Jiménez scored in the 50th minute off an assist from 16-year-old Gilberto Mora and Mexico advanced to its 12th CONCACAF Gold Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Honduras on Wednesday night. El Tri advanced to play the United States in the final Sunday night in Houston for the eighth meeting in the title game between the two countries with Mexico owning a 5-2 edge. Mexico has won nine Gold Cups, the U.S. seven and Canada one. Mexico broke through early in the second half on a play started by Alexis Vega with a pass to Mora near the top of the box. Mora slid a pass to Jiménez, who beat Edrick Menjívar with a right-footed shot for his 42nd career international goal. No. 17 ranked Mexico appeared to add to that lead a few minutes later when Edson Álvarez tapped in a goal off a set piece but that was negated when video review ruled he was offside. But El Tri managed to hold onto that lead as 75th ranked Honduras was unable to generate an equalizer. 'We had a deserved victory,' coach Javier Aguirre said through an interpreter. Honduras reached this stage for the first time since 2013 despite losing the opener of the tournament 6-0 to Canada. The Hondurans haven't made the final since the inaugural tournament in 1991 when they lost in penalty kicks to the U.S. Mexico hasn't allowed a goal in 383 minutes and goalie Luis Malagón has had to make only one save in the last three matches — an easy stop on Dixon Ramírez's shot from outside the box late in the first half. El Tri's had two good opportunities late in the first half. Johan Vásquez's shot in the box deflected off Honduran defender Denil Maldonado and right into the hands of goalie Menjívar. Menjívar then made a sharp save against Marcel Ruíz in the 42nd minute and Julián Martínez cleared the rebound out of danger. There was a chippy moment in the 11th minute when a ball was played into the Mexico bench area. Romell Quioto aggressively tried to get the ball for Honduras and Mexican reserve Guillermo Ochoa took exception, leading to players on both teams getting heated and a yellow card for Ochoa. ___ AP soccer:

What Cavs Would Have to Give Up to Bring LeBron James Back
What Cavs Would Have to Give Up to Bring LeBron James Back originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Mavericks shocked the world back in February when they dealt franchise centerpiece Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers before the trade deadline. Advertisement The historic swap sent Anthony Davis to Dallas along with a first round pick in a move that clearly signaled a move toward the future. Lakers star LeBron James had a player option on his contract this offseason which he picked up, but as Los Angeles focuses on the future, he appears to be evaluating where he fits in. There has been speculation that the king could be traded for the first time this offseason to a location that he deems more championship ready than the Lakers currently are. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23)Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images There has been no concrete information to suggest that James will request a trade, but if he does, there are people who believe the Cleveland Cavaliers will be major players. Advertisement The four-time NBA champion spent his first seven seasons with the team before departing for the Miami Heat, though he would eventually return for another four seasons in which he delivered Cleveland its first championship. Because he was born nearby in Akron and spent 11 of his first 15 seasons with the team, they will naturally always be linked. It would be difficult because of each team's financial situation, so Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus laid out an elaborate four-team trade that satisfies all salary cap regulations. The trade is an albatross with the main components being James going home to Cleveland, the Cavs sending out Jarrett Allen and De'Andre Hunter to the Lakers and Darius Garland to the Utah Jazz, who in turn send Walker Kessler to Cleveland along with two first-round picks. Advertisement There are a few other ancillary pieces in the trade to match salaries like Dorian Finney-Smith going to the Houston Rockets. This would be one of the most unprecedented deals in NBA history if it were to happen, but the odds are very slim. Utah has been shopping Kessler for about a year now, but they've been seeking multiple first rounders, so it's unlikely they'd ship him off with picks attached. Also, Cleveland has very wisely leaned into the youth they have on there roster, so it's hard to picture a scenario where they move two of their young stars for one or two more seasons of LeBron. If the Cavs want a storybook ending where the 21-time All-Star finishes his career there, they might need to find an alternate route. LeBron James Sparks Return to Cleveland Buzz Among NBA Fans
LeBron James Sparks Return to Cleveland Buzz Among NBA Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. LeBron James has become a hot topic of conversation around the NBA. With all of the new reports surrounding his relationship with the Los Angeles Lakers souring, there has been a lot of speculation that he could be traded. Could a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers be possible? Advertisement That is one potential destination that has been thrown around in the rumor mill. Now, James has sparked the rumors even more. Nick Pedone, a well-known sports figure in Cleveland, took to X to share the latest rumblings that have fans buzzing. In a new post on social media, James was wearing a hat that said, "Welcome Home." Could that be hinting at a return to the Cavaliers for a third stint with the franchise? Pedone suggested that in his post. "Rumors of LeBron James golfing in Northeast Ohio circulated this morning and now he posts himself wearing a 'Welcome Home' hat," Pedone wrote. "LeBron Watch 2025 is on." Advertisement Fans did not waste time rushing to the comments section to let their thoughts be known. There was a very split reaction to the idea of James returning to Cleveland. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23)Matt Blewett-Imagn Images "The Cavs are a loaded team...... And LeBron wants another ring..........," one fan wrote. Another fan chimed in, "Good lord here we go." "LeBron loves trolling. I would take with a total grain of salt," a third comment said. A fourth comment read, "No thanks." "Thanks for 2016 but it's a new Cavs' turn, bron," another comment stated. James is still playing at a high level. During the 2024-25 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, he played in 70 games and averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal per game while shooting 51.3% from the floor and 37.6% from the three-point line. Advertisement A return to Cleveland would be massive news, but no real connections have had the Cavaliers wanting to pursue a trade for LeBron.
