Malaysia no longer just competing but leading: Industry chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's rise in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025 reflects the tangible outcomes of strategic and productivity-driven reforms, with the pharmaceutical sector emerging as a standout contributor to the success.
Pharmaceutical Productivity Nexus (PPN) champion and Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries president Ch'ng Kien Peng said Malaysia is no longer just competing but leading.
Ch'ng said the pharmaceutical sector's gains reflect what is possible when productivity reforms are targeted, data-driven and collaborative.
"These wins go beyond industry metrics; they mean better access to affordable medicines, more quality jobs for Malaysians, and increased resilience in our healthcare supply chain," he said in a statement.
Under Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), the PPN has driven structural changes that translate directly into economic value.
These include streamlining product registration processes, aligning technical requirements across agencies and reducing regulatory bottlenecks.
As a result, the corporation said two new pharmaceutical facilities have successfully moved to development, unlocking millions in investment and new job opportunities.
"Two additional facilities are progressing more rapidly, thanks to reduced duplication and stronger agency coordination.
"Approval timelines have been shortened, giving Malaysian firms a competitive edge in time-to-market," it said.
MPC director general Datuk Zahid Ismail said the sector's transformation offers a blueprint for national economic renewal.
"Every bottleneck removed is an opportunity unlocked whether it's faster factory approvals, increased export readiness, or local production of critical medicines.
"This is productivity with purpose, and its effects are measurable," said Zahid.
To sustain and scale these results, MPC urged the industry to continue investing in automation, digitalisation and skills development.
In addition, the government should accelerate mutual recognition agreements, innovation incentives and seamless inter-agency frameworks, it said.

U.S. trade policy remains concerning for Malaysia's technology sector: analysts

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Xinhua) -- While global semiconductor sales for 2025 are expected to continue to grow, analysts remained cautious about outlook for Malaysia's technology sector due to prevailing uncertainties surrounding U.S. trade policy. TA Securities said in its recent note that should the U.S. implement sector-specific tariffs on semiconductor imports, it could materially impact end-market demand and Malaysian technology corporate earnings. According to the research house, heading into the second half, there are three major factors that could potentially influence the sector's earnings, U.S. policies; global semiconductor sales; progress of Malaysia's National Semiconductor Strategy. "Should the U.S. administration proceed with imposing tariffs on semiconductor imports, it could severely disrupt the global supply chain and dampen end-user demand," the research house said. Hence, it believed the policy risk will likely persist in the coming months, potentially leading to delays in orders and capital expenditure plans as corporates adopt a more conservative approach in response to the lack of policy visibility. Meanwhile, TA Securities noted that the global semiconductor market was still undergoing an upcycle, with positive momentum expected to continue into the second half.

Sapura Energy's regularisation plan to exit P17 status receives Bursa Malaysia approval

PETALING JAYA: Sapura Energy Bhd announced that Bursa Malaysia Securities has, through a letter dated June 30, 2025, approved the company's proposed regularisation plan (PRP). This marks a significant milestone in Sapura Energy's strategic efforts to restructure its debt, strengthen its financial position and exit its status as a company classified under Practice Note 17 (PN17) of the Main Market Listing Requirements. The approved PRP includes a comprehensive suite of measures comprising a capital reconstruction, debt restructuring, fundraising initiative and the necessary regulatory exemptions. These initiatives are designed to address accumulated losses and reduce total borrowings to support Sapura Energy's ongoing business turnaround and set the foundation for future growth. The proposed funding is earmarked for the settlement of outstanding payments to vendors in the Malaysian oil and gas ecosystem. 'We wish to extend our gratitude to Bursa Securities for their approval,' said Sapura Energy group CEO Muhammad Zamri Jusoh. 'This not only validates our regularisation strategy but also paves the way for us to emerge from PN17 stronger and more resilient. We remain committed to executing the regularisation plan responsibly, delivering value to our stakeholders and restoring market confidence in our business.' A general meeting of shareholders will be convened to approve the PRP, after which Sapura Energy will implement the approved measures and achieve full compliance with Bursa Securities' listing requirements. With the restructuring effective date targeted for August 2025 or latest by the longstop date of March 11, 2026, the group is set to conclude one of the most complex restructuring exercises in the country's history.

Gig workers bill to be tabled in parliament by September, says Ahmad Zahid

BANGI: The Gig Workers Bill, a pioneering legislation designed to safeguard gig economy workers in Malaysia, is expected to be tabled in Parliament by August or September, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today. Speaking after the Sharing Economy and Gig Industry Roundtable Session, Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the bill would be the first of its kind globally, offering dedicated protections for over 1.12 million Malaysians engaged in the sector. 'Several countries have amended existing laws to include gig workers, but Malaysia is introducing a new act specifically for this industry,' he said. The bill aligns with efforts to build a fair, inclusive, and resilient future economy. Ahmad Zahid noted that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has shown interest in learning from Malaysia's approach in drafting the legislation. This was conveyed by Malaysian Gig Community Secretariat chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who is currently in Geneva to discuss the bill with the ILO. Additionally, the soon-to-be-established Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) will play a crucial role in the national gig economy ecosystem. The commission, under the Prime Minister's Department, will oversee implementation, coordination, and compliance within the sector. 'SEGiM will strengthen self-regulation among platform providers while ensuring transparent policy enforcement,' Ahmad Zahid said. The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation will continue as the technical secretariat, consolidating industry feedback and coordinating with the Human Resource Ministry. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier assured that all welfare concerns for gig workers would be addressed through the bill. Also present at the session were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.
