Jaguars see Brian Thomas Jr. continuing to develop, becoming a leader in Year 2
As a rookie last season, Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. was one of the team's few bright spots, catching 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. And the Jaguars think he's only getting better.
Jaguars wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett said Thomas has shown this offseason that he wants to keep growing as a receiver, and as a team leader.
'He's definitely taken more of a leadership approach and role, and he speaks up. And it's not just from a verbal standpoint, he also leads by example. And so that's another way he's helping the entire room,' Bennett told the Florida Times-Union.
Thomas himself has said leadership is a priority of his this offseason, noting that he wants to help rookie Travis Hunter as Hunter attempts the rare feat of playing both wide receiver and cornerback.
Bennett said it's good to see a young player like Thomas, who was a Pro Bowler as a rookie last season, wanting to continue to grow.
'He's definitely not resting. He doesn't have that . . . that's not in him. He always seems like, when talking with him, he has that approach as far as he wants to be the best. And so with that, he put the work in and so that's his approach,' said Bennett. 'He puts the work in, the effort is there each and every day and it starts in the classroom. The moment he walks through the door, it's almost as though he's already in that mode as far as the classroom, walkthrough, practice field, weight room, whatever, he's giving it his all.'
In Thomas and Hunter, the Jaguars think they have a couple of special young playmakers who are as hard working as they are talented.

Bennett - who led the NHL with 15 goals in this year's playoffs and became the first Panthers player ever to score that many in a single postseason - is staying with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. He and Florida agreed Friday to a new eight-year contract worth $64 million, or $8 million per season. 'Sam is a special player who has mastered a unique blend of skill and physicality in his game, becoming one of the most impactful postseason performers of his generation,' Panthers general manager and hockey operations president Bill Zito said. 'He played an integral role in our two Stanley Cup championships, earning the franchise's first Conn Smythe trophy and is a dedicated contributor to our South Florida community off the ice. We are thrilled that he will continue his career with the Panthers.' Bennett was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs, the first Florida player to ever win that award. The last time a Conn Smythe winner didn't open the following season with the same team he had that playoff run with was 1997, when goaltender Mike Vernon helped Detroit win that year's Cup - and then the Red Wings traded him to San Jose that summer. It is the first of three big decisions that the Panthers have been waiting on heading into free agency, the others being what forward Brad Marchand - a trade deadline pickup who became an enormous part of the run to this Cup - and defenseman Aaron Ekblad will do going forward. The Bennett signing is another huge move by Zito, who now has eight players - all of them key parts of the team - under contract with the Panthers through at least the 2029-30 season. Bennett joins Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Anton Lundell, Seth Jones and Gustav Forsling on that list. The raise is a massive one for Bennett, who just finished the final year of a four-year contract that paid him just under $18 million. He had a postseason like almost none other; the only other player to have at least 15 goals and 48 penalty minutes in the same playoff run was Pittsburgh's Kevin Stevens in 1991. He had given indications throughout this offseason process - including at a nightclub during the Panthers' days-long initial Cup celebration - that he intended to remain in Florida, but nothing got officially done until Friday. Bennett is coming off perhaps his finest season, with 25 goals and 26 assists in the regular season for a career-best 51 points.

Rather than focusing solely on player acquisitions that were made this offseason--we can do that at a later time--I'm going to take a more holistic approach to answering this question. Hiring James Gladstone as the GM At the end of the day, it is the players who make the plays and win the games on Sundays, but getting to that point often starts with strong leadership. Coming from a successful organization in the LA Rams, Gladstone brings unique experiences, systems, and thought processes to Jacksonville that can help reshape the roster and organization fairly quickly. Advertisement But even more important than that is Gladstone has a very clear vision for where he wants this organization to go and the path to getting there. Ultimately, we won't know if the Jaguars are on the right track until games are played on Sundays and we have a large enough sample size to evaluate, but with this new leadership structure, it certainly feels like Jacksonville is heading the right direction and doing so quickly. Hiring head coach Liam Coen As many players have described, there is a tangible energy in the Jaguars' facility this offseason, and a lot of that starts with Liam Coen and the culture he is establishing. Then, from a football sense, Coen is bringing a Sean McVay-esque offense to the Jaguars. This is a system that's rooted in multiplicity, meaning that it throws a variety of different looks at opposing defenses to keep them off balance and guessing. Around the NFL in recent years, we've seen numerous quarterbacks and offenses have success in similar style systems. Again, the players make the plays, but this scheme can help shoulder some of that playmaking burden. Building around Trevor Lawrence This has been a clear priority for the Jaguars this offseason--making sure they are maximizing the window that they have with Lawrence. It started by hiring Coen and bringing in that offensive scheme of his. But in addition to that, Gladstone reshaped the offensive line by making six additions up front, which is where consistent success begins for any offense, and he also added a lot more speed by acquiring Dyami Brown, Travis Hunter, and Bhayshul Tuten. Advertisement With more balance around Lawrence, he's now in a better position not to have to do it all and be Superman on every play. Lawrence's play will determine the ceiling for this Jaguars team, so making sure that he's in the best position possible to succeed needs to be and has been a major priority for the new-look Jaguars. Two USC men's basketball players headed to 2025 NBA Summer League
Wednesday and Thursday marked the 2025 NBA draft. For just the second time in the past eight years, no USC players were selected during the event. However, two Trojans will have opportunities to prove themselves at the next level. Following the conclusion of the second round Thursday night, it was announced that two USC players will compete in the 2025 NBA Summer League. Saint Thomas will suit up for the Philadelphia 76ers, while Chibuzo Agbo will play for the San Antonio Spurs. Both Thomas and Agbo came to USC as transfers prior to the 2024-2025 season. In his lone season with the Trojans, Thomas averaged 9.5 points. 5.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Agbo, meanwhile, put up 11.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest. The 2025 NBA Summer League will take place from July 10-20 in Las Vegas. As undrafted invitees, Thomas and Agbo will be looking to show off for NBA teams with the hope of potentially getting a shot at a roster spot.
