India techie's F-1 visa ‘Refused' for a this very reason, Redditor weighs in

Hindustan Times4 hours ago
Indian students applying for F-1 visas are facing a new and confusing hurdle: a sudden 'Refused' status on the CEAC (Consular Electronic Application Center) portal, even when the visa officer keeps the passport and no formal rejection notice is given. (Representational image) Indian students face confusion over 'Refused' F-1 visa status amid social media screenings.
One applicant at the U.S. consulate in Mumbai recently shared their experience on Reddit. 'F1 Visa Interview - 'Refused' Status [Mumbai] Had my F1 visa interview on July 1 at the Mumbai consulate. The officer kept my passport and said they need to do social media screening. CEAC status now shows 'Refused,' but I wasn't given a 221(g) slip. Anyone faced this before? What should I expect next? Do I still have a chance?' the Redditor wrote.

No 221(g), no clarity, US student visa applicants left in limbo
Multiple students have reported the same sequence: a seemingly normal interview, passports retained by consular staff, and then, suddenly, a 'Refused' status with no 221(g) slip and no clear explanation. For many, the only hint comes from the consular officer saying something vague about 'social media screening.'
'Anyone who had an interview on or before 27th June and is yet to receive an update on their F1 visa application after receiving the 221(g) social media vetting form? Please update so that we can get to know about the timelines,' another Redditor urged.
This appears to be a consequence of recently intensified screening procedures, reportedly driven by updated U.S. visa rules under the Trump-era policies that still linger in practice. These policies call for enhanced scrutiny of applicants' social media profiles.
Another Redditor shared, 'I'm 31 years old with 7 years of experience in IT infrastructure and cloud support engineering. I'm from India with 3 years of experience here on OPT,' now left in a 'breadcrumbing' situation in a never ending loop of rejection.

To be clear, a 'Refused' status on CEAC doesn't always mean the visa is denied outright. Often, it just means the application is undergoing further review.

Child protection system disjointed, needs overhaul: SC Judge Surya Kant

The child protection framework in the country remains disjointed and under-equipped, and what is needed is a fundamental shiftone that sees the child not as a passive witness in a criminal trial, but as a person in urgent need of sustained and holistic care, Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant said on Saturday. Speaking at the inaugural session of the State-Level Meet 2025 on POCSO, Justice Kant added that the work is far from complete until children experience meaningful restorative justicewhere the systems meant to protect them do not retraumatise them. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, in his address, said child survivors must be placed at the centre of India's legal and moral framework in fighting this heinous crime against humanity. Justice Surya Kant emphasised that the system should prioritise the healing of children both within and outside the four walls of the courtroom, alongside ensuring accountability. "Our child protection framework, though well-intentioned, remains disjointed and under-equipped. What we need is a fundamental shiftone that sees the child not as a passive witness in a criminal trial, but as a person in urgent need of sustained and holistic care," Justice Kant reiterated. He also stated that justice for a child begins not in the courtroom, but the moment the child feels safe and secure, both within and outside their environment. Reintegration, he said, must not be an afterthought, but the foundation of our response. "Consider the case of a 10-year-old child made to recount trauma repeatedlybefore a teacher, a police officer, a medical examiner, a lawyer, and then a judge. With each retelling, her voice grows fainter until it vanishes altogether," he said. Justice Kant observed that the distress of the victim is often compounded by the legal process. When the system forgets the child in its pursuit of the accused, it fails them both. He noted that this imbalance is not incidental, but structural. "The child's healing is not just a legal requirementit is a moral obligation. In the Indian societal context, it is also a constitutional commitment," he said. He stressed that the task of protecting and supporting child victims is too important to be left to the legal system alone. It is not only the responsibility of the judiciary, police, and social workersbut a collective national duty. "We must move away from reactive justice to a more proactive, compassionate model, where rehabilitation is not a footnote, but the foundation," he said. In his speech, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said, "We must protect our children from sexual abuse at any cost and by all possible means. My government gives top priority to the protection of children and women," Reddy said. He highlighted that the Telangana Bharosa Project has 29 centres, which provide police support, legal aid, medical assistance, and counselling in a friendly environment. He added that the goal is not merely faster disposal of cases, but complete child protection and development. Reddy acknowledged that while the POCSO Act and the Juvenile Justice Act are highly progressive legal instruments, they are not without challenges. In his address, Justice Kant described child sexual abuse as a "silent epidemic" requiring trauma-informed investigations, child-sensitive courts, and extensive rehabilitation. While acknowledging the POCSO Act as a significant legislative step, he pointed out persistent gaps in its implementation and underscored the need for integrated legal, medical and psychological support for survivors. He applauded Bharosa Centres in Telangana as exemplary one-stop support hubs for victims. Further, Justice Kant highlighted NALSA's (National Legal Services Authority) Child-Friendly Legal Services Scheme (2024) as a key institution-building initiative. The BHAROSA support center of Telangana Police Women Safety Wing works on a holistic convergence approach where a victim in distress will get all the help and support at one place away from police stations and hospitals. Justice Kant reaffirmed NALSA's commitment to expanding child-sensitive legal aid across India, and called upon all State Legal Services Authorities to adopt integrated, victim-centric models reflecting constitutional values and global best practices.

Varun Kumar named 40th accused in AP liquor scam; SIT moves to bring hhm back from US

Vijayawada: In a significant development in the alleged liquor scam case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed a memo in the ACB Court in Vijayawada, naming Purushottam Varun Kumar as the 40th accused. Varun Kumar, a close associate of prime accused Raj Kasireddy, is believed to have played a key role in the financial fraud. Investigators revealed that he fled the country in July or August last year and is currently residing in the United States. Lookout notices have already been issued. According to sources, Varun Kumar is originally from Secunderabad and holds an engineering degree. Before his alleged involvement, he worked at a coffee shop in Hyderabad, earning a monthly salary of Rs 32,000. His entry into the scam began when a non-resident Indian doctor from Andhra Pradesh introduced him to Raj Kasireddy's network. He was subsequently appointed Andhra Pradesh operations head of a private distillery based in Puducherry. Authorities found that Varun's name was used to siphon off hundreds of crores of rupees. The SIT's investigation uncovered that Raj Kasireddy allegedly coerced the directors and executives of a Tamil Nadu-based company into handing over control of their associate distillery. Following this, Varun was installed as the AP operations head, and a bank account was opened in his name with cheque-signing powers of up to Rs 10 crore. Despite lacking basic infrastructure for liquor production, the distillery received massive supply orders from the Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limited (APSBCL). From June 2020 to March 2024, APSBCL transferred a staggering Rs 459 crore to the company's account—an amount the SIT flagged as highly irregular. Investigators found that the funds were rapidly diverted to several other accounts, many linked to suspicious or fictitious companies. With substantial evidence now in hand, the SIT has formally added Varun Kumar as an accused. Authorities are working to bring him back to India to extract further details and expose deeper layers of the scam.

Trump says Iran may restart nuclear programme "at a different location", calls it "a problem"

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran has not agreed to inspections of its nuclear programme or to halt uranium enrichment, raising fresh concerns over Tehran's commitments amid growing regional tensions, Al Jazeera reported. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he travelled to New Jersey after Independence Day celebrations, Trump stated, "I would think they'd have to start at a different location. And if they did start, it would be a problem." He added that he believes Iran's nuclear programme has been "set back permanently," though he acknowledged that Tehran could restart it elsewhere. Trump also said he would discuss Iran with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to the White House on Monday, where a potential Gaza ceasefire is also expected to be on the agenda, Al Jazeera reported. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not been able to inspect Iran's nuclear facilities since the start of the recent conflict, despite IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stating that resuming monitoring is a top priority. Al Jazeera reported that Iran has expressed growing mistrust of the nuclear watchdog, particularly after the agency passed a resolution on June 12 accusing Tehran of non-compliance with its nuclear obligations--one day before Israeli strikes began. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered a formal severing of ties with the IAEA following the Guardian Council's approval of a bill suspending cooperation. Guardian Council spokesperson Hadi Tahan Nazif said the measure was enacted to ensure "full respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran." Live Events According to Iranian state television, the law stipulates that the suspension will remain in place until certain conditions are met, including guarantees of the safety of Iran's nuclear facilities and scientists. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected Grossi's request to visit sites bombed by Israel and the US. "Grossi's insistence on visiting the bombed sites under the pretext of safeguards is meaningless and possibly even malign in intent," Araghchi said. While the US claimed its joint strikes with Israel either destroyed or badly damaged three uranium enrichment sites, it remains unclear what became of Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium, especially the over 400kg enriched to up to 60 per cent purity, a level below but close to weapons-grade, Al Jazeera reported.
