Sabah's deep-sea seafood port to boost economy with RM1.8 billion annually

The Sun3 days ago
KOTA KINABALU: The development of a European Union-standard deep-sea seafood port in Kota Kinabalu is projected to contribute RM1.8 billion annually to Sabah's economy.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor highlighted this as a high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector.
A total of RM360 million has been committed by the state government and local partners.
The port is expected to handle 50,000 tonnes of tuna yearly.
It aims to elevate Sabah's role in the deep-sea fishing industry.
Hajiji shared these details during the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and key agriculture officials.
Hajiji also noted the revival of the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board in 2024, which was dissolved in 1981.
This move is seen as a step toward boosting rice self-sufficiency.
The state targets a 30% self-sufficiency level (SSL) by 2026 and 60% by 2030.
These targets align with federal agricultural priorities.
Agriculture contributes RM12.2 billion to Sabah's GDP, making up 14.5% of the total.
This has prompted the state to adopt modern technologies like IoT and smart farming.
These innovations aim to enhance efficiency, productivity, and youth participation in the sector.
Sabah's 15 permanent food production parks have already yielded over 1,494 tonnes of produce.
This has generated RM4.32 million in returns. – Bernama

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by weaker United States (US) economic data that weighed on the greenback and prompted investors to reassess market sentiment, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2180/2315 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2260/2310. Advertisement Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama the weaker-than-expected US ISM Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates in September. 'Weaker US economic data, including last Friday's non-farm payrolls, has shifted the narrative. The likelihood of rate cuts is rising as policymakers seek to support growth,' he said. On the domestic front, Mohd Afzanizam noted that the ringgit had performed well against the US dollar but cautioned that some profit-taking may occur after its sharp gains over the past two days. 'We expect the ringgit to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 against the US dollar today,' he added. Advertisement The ringgit was also mostly higher against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.8795/8889 from 2.8618/8654 on Tuesday and rose against the British pound to 5.6197/6377 from 5.6159/6226. However, it slipped against the euro to 4.8954/9110 from 4.8772/8830. The ringgit advanced against the Singapore dollar to 3.2841/2949 from 3.2793/2834 and appreciated against the Thai baht to 13.0747/1229 from 13.0408/0627. The local unit also gained against the Philippine peso to 7.36/7.39 from 7.33/7.34 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 257.6/258.5 from 257.8/258.2. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Swiss president races to US to prevent 39% tariff hike

WASHINGTON: Switzerland's president was in Washington on Tuesday in a last-minute push to stop steep new tariffs, but with no appointment to plead her case to US President Donald Trump. Switzerland faces a 39-percent duty, one of the highest among the dozens of economies that will be hit by new tariffs expected to come into force from Thursday. President Karin Keller-Sutter and Economy Minister Guy Parmelin were visiting Washington 'to facilitate meetings with the US authorities at short notice and hold talks with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland,' the government said in a statement. 'The aim is to present a more attractive offer to the United States in a bid to lower the level of reciprocal tariffs for Swiss exports, taking US concerns into account.' But a White House official told AFP there was 'no meeting with the President scheduled at this time.' Trump had originally threatened in April to slap a 31-percent tariff on Switzerland. But he surprised the export-driven country last week when he decided to hike the rate to 39 percent despite numerous discussions between Swiss and US officials aimed at reaching a deal. The Swiss government noted that the country will be hit by much higher tariffs than what other wealthy economies, such as Britain, Japan or the European Union, are facing. The government 'reaffirmed that it was keen to pursue talks with the United States on the tariff situation,' and the president and economy minister were visiting Washington 'for this reason,' Tuesday's statement said. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, however, told CBS television on Sunday that the tariffs on global trading partners, which are coming into force this week, 'are pretty much set.' Trump signaled that a separate initially 'small' tariff on imports of pharmaceuticals from around the world -- a key sector for Switzerland -- could come 'within the next week.' But the sector-specific tariff could rise to 150 percent in a year and eventually be as high as 250 percent, he added, saying the delay was to allow companies to shift production to the United States. Pharmaceuticals represented 60 percent of Swiss goods exports to the United States last year. Swiss surplus Keller-Sutter and Parmelin were accompanied by a small delegation, including the heads of the economy and international finance departments, a Swiss government official said. But the official declined to give details about the potential meetings. The government said it will 'issue a statement as soon as there are any relevant developments for the public.' The United States is a key trading partner for Switzerland, taking 18.6 percent of its total exports last year, according to Swiss customs data. Keller-Sutter has said Trump believes that Switzerland 'steals' from the United States by enjoying a trade surplus of 40 billion Swiss francs ($50 billion). Swiss companies have urged the government to negotiate a lower tariff. 'I am convinced that Donald Trump wants to make a deal and show it to his US voters,' Nik Hayek, the head of watch firm Swatch, told Le Temps newspaper in an interview published late Monday. But, Hayek added, 'President Karin Keller-Sutter has to react and find a solution in person there.' - AFP
