Celtic Treble winner writes off Rangers challenge despite 49ers takeover and insists questions remain unanswered

Daily Record01-06-2025
The Ibrox club are expected to be stronger next season but one ex-Parkhead star isn't running scared
Former Celtic star Bobby Petta insists his old club should have no fears over a renewed challenge from rivals Rangers next season despite their takeover.
The Dutchman - who spent five years with the Hoops and won a domestic Treble under Martin O'Neill in 2001 - said it 'doesn't matter' what happens at Ibrox because Brendan Rodgers will lead Celtic to five in a row.

Rangers were taken over by NFL giants San Francisco 49ers' investment wing with the promise of an initial £20million cash injection to help improve the Light Blues squad.

But Petta, speaking to the Sunday Post, isn't concerned and said: 'For me, it doesn't matter what happens at Rangers. Sure, keep an eye on it and be vigilant, but they shouldn't be able to get too close to Celtic in the next year.
'I think Celtic will win the league and that will be five-in-a-row. It's getting higher and higher all the time.
'It's up to Rangers to be stronger and more consistent to make a proper challenge over 38 games.

'Let's see if they are capable of doing it under the new owners and the new manager.
"There are still lots of questions unanswered at Rangers.

'If I was at Celtic right now I'd be thinking to myself: 'Bring it on and let's see what you've got'. I would not be scared in any manner of Rangers.'

Manager who Robbie Savage sacked at Macclesfield doesn't hold back about Forest Green move

Manager who Robbie Savage sacked at Macclesfield doesn't hold back about Forest Green move After Robbie Savage departed Macclesfield to join Forest Green Rovers, a manager the former Premier League star previously sacked has offered his clear thoughts on the move Robbie Savage was recently unveiled as the new manager of Forest Green Rovers, and posed for a picture with owner Dale Vince (Image: FGRFC_Official/X ) A former Macclesfield manager that was sacked by Robbie Savage believes the club will be in a "better position" now the ex-Wales captain has left. Savage, 50, was recently unveiled as the new manager of League Two side Forest Green Rovers. His move comes one year after he appointed himself as head coach of the Silkmen and four years after he became a board member of the re-launched side. ‌ Before he inserted himself into the dugout, Savage was a director of football at Macclesfield. He parted with predecessor Michael Clegg, before appointing himself as head coach. ‌ In his one and only season in charge, Macclesfield dominated the Northern Premier League, winning the title by 26 points and comfortably getting promoted into the National League North – the sixth tier of English football. Despite committing last month to remain with the Silkmen by extending his contract by two years, Savage ultimately resigned as head coach and director of football, but remained a part-owner of the club. After news of his exit was confirmed, Clegg tweeted his reaction. He wrote: " A massive day for Macc (Macclesfield). They are now in a better position than ever… this club will fly now.' Article continues below While replying to another fan on social media, Clegg reaffirmed his comment, writing: " My life since Macc has been amazing. From office staff to players to maintenance men. There will be a party tonight. Trust me." Clegg is now the manager of Atherton Collieries (Image: MacclesfieldFC/X ) Clegg was appointed as manager of Macclesfield in February 2024 and came within 90 minutes of promotion in the NPL Premier play-off final, but the Silkmen lost 2-1 to Marine. While various reports claimed Clegg was sacked by the club, he told the Bolton News the decision was a mutual one. ‌ Clegg, who is now the manager of Atherton Collieries, said: "Working at a club of that size it's a lot of phone calls from agents, there was always something, but I just always had a feeling that I wouldn't start the season, whether that was for me or from their side. I was right. "Everything dragged on longer than it should have done. I wasn't an angel, and I could have handled it better. I didn't need to leave the club. "A lot of people thought I got sacked but the club was keen for me to stay but the terms of my work there were different to the terms of my contract, and that is what I wasn't happy with. ‌ Savage guided Macclesfield to promotion to the National League North (Image: Andy Stenning/Daily Mirror ) "Absolutely nothing to do with money, anything but, more that the conditions they wanted me to work under were a no-go. I got on really well with the board, well, there was only one person I didn't get on with, but once they knew how torn that relationship was it proved impossible to carry on." Not long after Savage's exit, Macclesfield announced the appointment of John Rooney – the younger brother of Manchester United legend Wayne – as manager. Rooney had spent the last two years as a player of the club, but will now become the new head coach. Red Bull's real emergency as Max Verstappen to Mercedes reality comes to light

Rumours linking Max Verstappen with a move to Mercedes dominated the build-up to the British Grand Prix but the Dutchman has shown no indication that he is ready to quit Red Bull Red Bull have an emergency on their hands – but not the one that the whole Formula 1 paddock is talking about. Because, unless he has a huge change of heart, Max Verstappen is probably not going to join Mercedes ahead of 2026. There are certainly some people in his camp who would like to see that happen. Where else do you think the rumours claiming the four-time champion is ready to quit Red Bull came from? And it's true that Verstappen is frustrated with Red Bull's current position – he wants to win the title every year but they cannot compete with McLaren on that front. ‌ But, for the Dutchman, the idea of completing his whole F1 career with Red Bull is appealing. If they tumble completely away from contention at the front of the grid, then it will be a tougher decision. But right now he is still competing for and securing pole positions and victories, as he did at Silverstone on Sunday. ‌ And, at Mercedes, they look set to end the argument once and for all. They have made George Russell wait but at no point has he doubted that his future lies with the Silver Arrows. "The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year is, I think, exceptionally low," he said ahead of the British Grand Prix. And his patience is set to be rewarded in the coming weeks with the potential for a deal to be agreed by the next race in Belgium at the end of this month. Russell has made no contact whatsoever with Red Bull or other teams about a 2026 seat, further evidence of his belief that he has nothing to worry about. Red Bull's actual problem is their car, which remains far too temperamental. There are certain tracks and conditions where it is good enough for Verstappen to wrestle it into contention, as he did at Silverstone. But, just a week earlier in Austria, even before he was punted off by Kimi Antonelli on the first lap, Red Bull were nowhere at the circuit which bears their name. The situation is not being helped by their ongoing search for a second driver who can even get close to Verstappen. Swapping out a floundering Liam Lawson for the more experienced Yuki Tsunoda made sense at the time. But Red Bull are still without a second driver who can provide lap times that their engineers can use as a comparison to Verstappen's data. ‌ And that makes it very tough to develop their car. Tsunoda qualified 12th at Silverstone on Saturday with a lap time half-a-second slower than Verstappen's effort in Q2. The Dutchman's pole lap was almost a full second quicker than his team-mate's best effort. It is, of course, not a problem exclusive to Tsunoda. He, Lawson, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly have all wilted under the spotlight over the last six years. And then there is the engine. Red Bull are building their own for 2026, which they have never done before. Senior figures at the team truly believe it will be "competitive" – that's the word they're using a lot. But sources don't seem particularly confident that it will be good enough to win races next year. And if that happens, perhaps they will then truly have to worry about Verstappen's future.

Jury votes on how to spend Celtic £20m transfer loot as signing guru reveals four key moves targeted

Rangers have ramped up their recruitment drive this week. Are the club's five summer signings so far good enough to get them past Panathinaikos in the first Champions League qualifier? KEITH JACKSON: No. They need to concentrate on the top end of the team now with two wingers and at least one striker top of the agenda. That'll be the expensive part of this rebuild but absolutely essential. ANDY NEWPORT: They are putting the pieces in place but there are still some big gaps to be filled, especially in the forward areas. The dressing room walls will be bulging too, so offloading some of the deadwood will be key too. SCOTT MCDERMOTT: If you add those to what was already in the building, yes they can get past the Greeks - but it won't be easy. Russell Martin still needs more through the door and a raft of players to exit as well. MICHAEL: There's been some solid early work but there are still gaps in the side that need to be filled. Rangers need more width and pace in the side for starters. Celtic have banked £17million-plus on the sale of Nicolas Kuhn. How should Brendan Rodgers spend the proceeds? KEITH: Celtic also need to beef up their options in the final third. With Kuhn gone and Jota injured, Rodgers will be looking for two top quality wide men. And, given that he's gone six months without a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, he'll have a new No.9 on his wish list too. ANDY: Another centre-back will be handy but Celtic's real urgent area of concern is up front. They need a proper centre-forward and at least two more wide players to cope with Kuhn's departure and Jota's long-term injury. SCOTT: He'll want two wide players for a start, with Kuhn leaving and Jota injured. He's still looking for left-back cover too. With Cameron Carter-Vickers not fully fit and new boy Inamura a development player, he'll also need a centre-back. MICHAEL: Celtic need to ramp up the recruitment drive from development players to first team ready stars. A couple of wide men and a striker are top of the list. Ann Budge's time at Tynecastle is coming to and end as the Gorgie chairwoman prepares to step down. How should she be remembered by Hearts fans? KEITH: Fondly. Budge isn't everyone's cup of tea and much of her decision making has been erratic since taking the helm. This does feel like the right time for her to move aside. But she stepped up when she was required and went on to future proof the club. Her contribution will never be forgotten. ANDY: Seeing the club relegated during Covid and let slip what should have been a strangle hold on third place last season were blots on the copy book - but without Budge's millions and hours of graft alongside the Foundation of Hearts, the Gorgie faithful might not have a club at all to support. She should have a statue outside the new stand she helped construct. SCOTT: Like all football club owners, she's made mistakes. But if it wasn't for Budge, who knows where Hearts would be right now? Fans shouldn't ever forget her huge contribution. MICHAEL: As one of the most important people in the club's history. She helped save the club, empower the Foundation of Hearts then usher in this new era of optimism. Sure, there was some mistakes along the way but Budge should forever go down as the Queen of Hearts. Jambos boss Derek McInnes has his captain back on board. How high up the Premiership table should he be aiming now he has Lawrence Shankland leading the line? KEITH: Hearts are a club on the up right now and Derek McInnes wouldn't have taken on the job if he didn't believe he could take them to the next level. That means rolling around in the mud with Celtic and Rangers next season - and Shankland's goals can help him achieve that. A third place finish will be the minimum aim. ANDY: The battle for third place has never been fiercer but Hearts have no excuse if they are not in the mix until the bitter end. They now have the off-field backing, a manager who knows the course and a striker that is among the best in the business. Now they need to go get it done. SCOTT: They have to aim for third, despite finishing bottom six last term. McInnes will believe with financial backing that he can split the Old Firm. But if they can be the best of the rest - and ahead of Hibs - come May he'll be delighted. MICHAEL: Keeping Shanks is a major bonus but the target for Hearts remains the same as it always is with or without the striker. The Jambos should be aiming for third this season and going deep in the cup competitions.
