‘Terrorism will stay as long as Islam is there': Exiled Bangladesh writer Taslima Nasrin on Pahalgam attack
According to news agency PTI, while speaking at the Delhi Literature Festival, the Lajja author remarked, 'Islam has not evolved in 1,400 years.' She added, "Until it does, it will continue to breed terrorists. In the 2016 Dhaka attack, Muslims were slaughtered because they could not recite the Kalma. This is what happens when faith is allowed to overrule reason and humanity."
The Pahalgam attack on April 22 claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists. On July 1, 2016, terrorists had stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, leaving 29 dead.
Taslima Nasrin also criticised the expansion of religious institutions, stating, "In Europe, churches have turned into museums, but Muslims are busy building mosques everywhere. There are thousands and they still want more. What they produce are jihadists. There should be no madrasas. Children must read all books, not just one."
Forced into exile in 1994 after being accused of blasphemy, Nasrin has since lived in Sweden, the US, and India. She shared her emotional connection to India, saying, "I am a permanent resident of the United States and lived there for 10 years, but I always felt like an outsider. It was only when I came to Kolkata that I felt at home. Even after being thrown out of West Bengal, I found another home in Delhi. This country has given me a sense of belonging that my own country could not."
"I love India. It feels like home," she added.
Turning her attention to women's rights, Nasrin criticised the situation in her homeland and expressed support for legal reform. "Every civilised country must have a UCC. India too. I support it. Islamic patriarchs want Quranic rights. Rights must never be religious. If women's security is compromised in the name of culture, religion or tradition, then we must question that culture. A society that cannot protect half of its population is a failed society," she said.

The Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday urged people to boycott movies featuring the actor-politician Kamal Haasan, in a response to his comments on 'sanatana dharma' made at a charity event held on Sunday. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan said that only education has the power to change the nation and it is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana. (PTI) BJP state secretary Amar Prasad Reddy posted a video message onto his social media accounts, wherein he said: 'Earlier it was Udhayanidhi Stalin. Now, it is Kamal who wants to destroy sanatana dharma. Let's teach them a lesson.' 'I appeal to every Hindu to not watch Kamal's movies, not even on OTT. If we do this, they will not share such irresponsible statements that hurt millions of Hindus on public platforms,' he added. At the event on Sunday organised by Agaram Foundation, a non-profit run by fellow Tamil actor Suriya, Kamal Haasan said: 'Only education has the power to change the nation. It is the only weapon that can break the shackles of dictatorship and Sanatana.' The actor was referring to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which the ruling DMK wants abolished. Haasan also said that a central exam for medical admissions was a barrier for marginalised students. 'Do not take any other weapon in your hand. It isn't possible to win with any other weapon because ignorant majoritarianism will defeat you,' added Haasan, who recently became a member of the Rajya Sabha after being nominated by the DMK after his party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) entered into an alliance with them ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year. The controversy around the actor's comments recalled the row that erupted in 2023 around deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's call for the eradication of sanatana dharma, wherein he said: 'Just like dengue, mosquitoes, malaria, or coronavirus need to be eradicated, we have to eradicate Sanatana.' Historically, the DMK has considered sanatana dharma to be a centuries-old issue which compounds caste and gender-based discrimination. This point has found itself echoed by the writings of BR Ambedkar. Haasan's former co-actor Khusboo Sundar, who was recently appointed vice president of the state BJP, said that Haasan's comments were unnecessary. 'I feel Kamal sir speaking at an event like this about education and bringing in Sanatana was absolutely uncalled for, unwanted,' Sundar told PTI. 'You could have just stressed on the importance of education because we all agree education is your biggest weapon. Speaking there about Sanatana was absolutely wrong because nobody is including education with Sanatana...,' he added. Haasan has not personally issued any response to the BJP's criticism, as of the time of going to print. Meanwhile, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan said that the entire right wing was enraged with Haasan's speech. 'Kamal Haasan has hit the bull's eye. They (the right wing) don't know how to react. They are not able to attack him and know his powers of amplification,' he said.

EC suspends 4 officers for doctoring Bengal poll roll
NEW DELHI: Taking serious note of the "wrongful" additions being made to the West Bengal electoral roll by some of its field officers, Election Commission on Tuesday ordered immediate suspension of EROs and assistant EROs of Baruipur Purba assembly constituency (AC) and Moyna AC. It also directed that an FIR be filed against them for "criminal misconduct". In a letter sent to the West Bengal chief secretary on Tuesday, the poll panel said it has "taken serious note of the grave lapses and has decided the officers shall be placed under suspension for their failure in supervising the election related work... and suitable disciplinary proceedings initiated against them without any delay". The action against West Bengal civil service officers and EROs of Baruipur Purba AC and Moyna AC, Debottam Dutta Choudhury and Biplab Sarkar, respectively, and assistant EROs Tathagat Mondal and Sudipta Das, came after the state chief electoral officer (CEO) reported that they had been disposing of applications for inclusion in the electoral roll without proper verification or allowing a window for claims and objections. They also violated the policy of data security by sharing their login credentials for the electoral roll database with unauthorised persons. EC has ordered lodging of an FIR against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. Significantly, the CEO has reported to EC similar lapses by other West Bengal officials involved in preparation, revision and correction of the electoral roll. Action against these erring officers would follow, said an EC source. The rush on part of certain EROs and AEROs in West Bengal to arbitrarily add names to the state's roll comes even as EC prepares to order special intensive revision of its roll, on the lines of the exercise in Bihar. A source indicated that the hurry to add electors - many suspected to be Bangladeshi settlers - ahead of assembly polls next year may be an effort to ensure their names are on the roll before the enumeration phase of SIR gets underway. As per Section 32(1) of the R P Act, 1950, any ERO or assistant ERO guilty of any act or omission in breach of official duty, shall be punishable with a minimum jail term of three months, which can extend to two years with fine.

Mamata slams Assam govt as gram pradhan gets NRC notice
1 2 Ghatal/Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned how the Assam govt was issuing NRC notices to Bengal residents, her statement coinciding with yet another Cooch Behar resident receiving the same during the day. This time, the recipient is an elected gram pradhan of Mathabhanga. "How is the Assam govt issuing such notices? NRC notices are being sent to Rajbanshis, Seal families, Matuas — they are being harassed. Bengali workers are being killed in Maharashtra. They are being tortured in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Many are still jailed in Gurgaon," she said. "How dare they say there is no language called Bengali? I have no problem with speaking other languages — I respect them all. But it is unacceptable if someone is not allowed to speak in his mother tongue or if someone speaking in Bengali is called Bangladeshi or if someone with valid documents is pushed back to Bangladesh," she said. TMC posted the notice on its social media handles, and in Bengali. "Another NRC notice! This time targeting Cooch Behar! The Foreigners Tribunal in Nalbari, Assam, has summoned the elected head of Hazrahat-II panchayat. They have been asked to appear on Aug 27 to prove their 'citizenship'. Is Bengal under Assam's jurisdiction?" it said. The CM said in the name of SIR, there was a veiled attempt to implement NRC. "No one should be left out of the voters' list. Everyone should get themselves enlisted. We will not tolerate the removal of genuine citizens from voter rolls and labelling them as Bangladeshis. Their EPICs were issued by ECI. It was the govt of India which issued Aadhaar cards," she added. "Someone's parents passed away long ago and now they are demanding their birth certificate. This is a conspiracy by the double-engine govt — the govt of India along with the Election Commission of India. The names of as many as 7 lakh Hindus were removed in Assam," warned CM Banerjee. Didi assures migrants of help CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged migrant workers to return to Bengal, promising that once they registered on notified portal and declared their wish to return, the state would ensure that they receive all help. "Just say that you require help and we will ensure that we bring you under social welfare schemes. We will also try to help you through direct transfers," she said in Keshpur after taking stock of flood situation.
