Make education a focus in revamped 13MP, govt told
PETALING JAYA : Economist Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera says the government should make education a priority to drive sustainable economic growth as it revamps the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Kameel said development should extend beyond infrastructure and fiscal targets.
It should also be people-centric, said the International Islamic University Malaysia's economics professor.
He said there was an urgent need for Malaysia to reform its education system from preschool to the tertiary level, citing Japan's emphasis on character-building in early childhood as a model.
Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera.
He also called for greater investment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects; technical and vocational education (TVET), and digital skills including artificial intelligence.
'Malaysian students are not inferior, but they need the right coaching, values and opportunities,' he told FMT.
Kameel was commenting after the government announced that the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), originally introduced under former economy minister Rafizi Ramli, would be reworked by finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan.
Coming just weeks before its scheduled tabling in Parliament, the 13MP revamp has sparked questions as to whether eleventh hour changes to be made would compromise policy continuity and reflect political uncertainty.
Kameel, however, welcomed the revamp, saying previous approaches to national planning were too narrow, as they were focused largely on project spending and fiscal allocation.
'Malaysia Plans are too focused on projects. A good plan must also drive behavioural change and get the private sector actively involved in achieving national goals,' he said.
He specified that the plan should promote equitable and sustainable growth, ensure balanced budgets, and empower citizens through education and healthcare.
Asked whether the last-minute overhaul might unsettle investors, Kameel said:
'Investors are intelligent and rational. If the changes to the 13MP can bring about such results, then why would investors care if it is done by civil servants?'
Although defending the concept of five-year plans, Kameel stressed that they must be dynamic and adaptable.
'They provide a macro view of where we're heading, but they shouldn't be rigid.'
He called for regular reviews with input from all stakeholders, including investors, industries and the general public, to ensure the 13MP remains relevant and effective.
Carmelo Ferlito.
Meanwhile, Center for Market Education CEO Carmelo Ferlito urged the government to prioritise simpler reforms rather than undertake rigid central planning.
'These plans often end up as high-sounding wish lists,' he said, warning that unclear and complex measures, such as e-invoicing or the expanded sales and service tax, only burden businesses and investors.
'The less the government plans, the better. Let the people plan for themselves,' Ferlito said when contacted.

French visit to yield RM4bil in potential investments, says Miti
Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the mission's overall success reflects the foreign companies' continued confidence in Malaysia's investor-friendly policies. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia is expected to reap RM4 billion in potential investments and RM675 million in potential exports following the trade and investment mission to France led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on July 4. In a statement today, the investment, trade and industry ministry said Anwar met 40 representatives from France's industrial sector, with several companies expressing intention to invest in high-tech manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy, tourism and hospitality, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. 'As for potential exports, RM675 million was generated for high-impact sectors such as aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, digital economy, lifestyle and halal industries. 'These are sectors targeted under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the Green Investment Strategy,' it said. Miti said several companies also shared their intention to continue investing in Malaysia, driven by key factors such as a conducive, stable and dynamic investment ecosystem; encouraging global demand for Malaysian-made products; efficient domestic supply chains; a highly skilled workforce; and investor-friendly government policies. The delegation included the minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). Tengku Zafrul said the mission's overall success reflected the foreign companies' continued confidence in Malaysia's investor-friendly policies, supply chain ecosystem, competitiveness and economic growth potential. 'The investment and trade potential to be realised will also provide business opportunities for local companies, including small and medium enterprises, and more high-paying jobs for Malaysians. 'All these are key in driving our economic transformation agenda,' he said.

Zahid rejects solo path for Umno in GE16 despite grassroots sentiment, will contest under BN
LUMUT, July 6 — Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that the party will not contest solo in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said Umno will remain a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN) for the election. He said Umno has never contested on its own in the past, and dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnership within BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH). '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH... that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said when opening the 2025 Lumut Umno Division Delegates' Meeting here today. He said Umno will continue to use the dacing (scales) logo (the BN symbol) in GE16 without sidelining its partners such as MIC, MCA, PH, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS). Also present at the meeting were Perak Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Yesterday, Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stated that the party will not be contesting solo in GE16, as it has never done so in its history, despite the changing political dynamics. — Bernama

Zaliha said the government remains committed to identifying the most suitable candidate who will serve in the best interest of Labuan's socio-economic development. 'We are seriously looking into the right person to lead Labuan Corporation. We want someone capable of driving the island's growth and addressing the needs of the community,' she said.
