Zahid rejects solo path for Umno in GE16 despite grassroots sentiment, will contest under BN
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said Umno will remain a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN) for the election.
He said Umno has never contested on its own in the past, and dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnership within BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
'(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo.
'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH... that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said when opening the 2025 Lumut Umno Division Delegates' Meeting here today.
He said Umno will continue to use the dacing (scales) logo (the BN symbol) in GE16 without sidelining its partners such as MIC, MCA, PH, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS).
Also present at the meeting were Perak Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Yesterday, Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stated that the party will not be contesting solo in GE16, as it has never done so in its history, despite the changing political dynamics. — Bernama

Asman Shah appointed Johor state secretary after Azmi Rohani's move to Istana Negara
JOHOR BARU, July 7 — Johor deputy state secretary (development) Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman has been appointed as the state's new state secretary, replacing Tan Sri Azmi Rohani. The appointment was announced by Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail in a brief post on his official Facebook page today. In the post, Asman Shah was presented the Letter of Credence at a ceremony held at the Balai Mengadap, Istana Bukit Serene here. Present at the ceremony was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Johor Royal Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli. Asman Shah's appointment puts an end to a week-long speculation on the new state secretary, following the appointment of Azmi as the new Comptroller of the Royal Household in Istana Negara on July 1, The 59-year-old senior state civil servant previously held the positions of Johor Baru district officer, Pasir Gudang mayor, Johor Tourism director and the state-owned Johor Biotechnology and Biodiversity Corporation chief executive officer. Asman Shah has a Bachelor of Economics from University of Malaya (UM) and a Bachelor of Laws and Economics from Chiba University in Japan. The father of three is also a recipient of the Excellent Service Award in 2019 and 2020. Besides his administrative positions, Asman Shah is known for his other roles as the Johor Administrative Officers Scuba Diving Association president and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) II team manager.
