Germany backs Israel after Iran war in first high-level visit
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt expressed support for Israel on Sunday during a visit to the site of an Iranian missile strike near Tel Aviv, part of the destruction left by this month's 12-day war.
It was the first visit by a senior foreign official since the war between Iran and Israel, which ended on Tuesday after a ceasefire was announced.
"We must deepen our support for Israel," Dobrindt said, speaking amid the rubble in Bat Yam, south of the coastal hub of Tel Aviv, where an Iranian strike killed nine people including three children.
Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran on June 13, saying it was aimed at keeping the Islamic republic from developing a nuclear weapon -- an ambition Tehran has consistently denied.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the German visit a gesture of "solidarity" and urged the international community to reimpose sanctions on Iran.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on June 17, on the sidelines of a G7 summit in Canada, said Israel was doing the "dirty work... for all of us" by targeting Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
Israel has acknowledged being hit by more than 50 missiles during the 12-day war with Iran, resulting in 28 deaths, but the true extent of the damage may never be known due to stringent media restrictions.
In Iran, Israeli strikes killed at least 627 civilians and injured nearly 4,900, according to official figures.

Iran Holds Mass Funeral for Slain Officials

State television broadcast scenes of mourners dressed in black, waving Iranian flags, and holding photos of the deceased during the ceremony. It further involved Iranian flag-draped coffins and large displays of portraits depicting slain uniformed commanders in central Tehran. Both the Israeli and Iranian sides have been declaring 'victory' following the 12-days of airstrikes and also ballistic and hypersonic missile fire on Israel. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has charged that President Trump is 'grossly exaggerating' when he says that Iran's nuclear program was obliterated – though Iranian officials have publicly conceded that there was serious damage at key facilities. Among the prominent figures mourned in the events were General Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Guard's ballistic missile program. Both were said to be killed on the opening day of the surprise attack. Also honored was the slain Major General Mohammad Bagheri of the Revolutionary Guard, and the leading nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi. There are reports that car bombs and drones guided from within the country (via Israeli spy assets on the ground) also assisted in targeted assassinations. Thousands of mourners lined the streets of Tehran for the state funeral service for around 60 Iranians, including military commanders, killed during the recent Israel-Iran war. Israel's security agency, Shin Bet, announced on Sunday that it had dismantled a major Hamas network in the West Bank city of Hebron. Shin Bet described the network as 'significant, complex, and large-scale,' and said it had uncovered 10 militant cells that were planning to carry out attacks in the near future. Gaza civil defence says Israeli forces kill 37, including children
AFP | Gaza City Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed 37 people in the devastated territory yesterday, including at least nine children who died in strikes. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP 35 people were killed in seven Israeli drone and air strikes in various locations, and two others by Israeli fire while waiting for food aid in the Netzarim zone in central Gaza. He said the dead included three children who were killed in an air strike on a home in Jabalia, in northern Gaza. Bassal said at least six more children died in a neighbourhood in the northeast of Gaza City, including some in an air strike near a school where displaced people were sheltering. Mourners AFP images showed mourners weeping over the bodies of seven people, including at least two children, wrapped in white shrouds and blankets at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Video footage filmed from southern Israel showed smoke rising over northern Gaza after blasts. Other AFP footage filmed in Gaza City showed a cloud of smoke rising from buildings after a strike. In Jabalia, an AFP photographer saw civil defence rescuers aiding a man with blood on his back. Israel launched its offensive in Gaza in October 2023 in response to a deadly attack by Palestinian group Hamas. After claiming victory in a 12- day war against Iran that ended with a ceasefire on June 24, the Israeli military said it would refocus on its offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian fighters still hold Israeli hostages. Qatar said yesterday that it and fellow mediators the US and Egypt were engaging with Israel and Hamas to build on momentum from the ceasefire with Iran and work towards a Gaza truce. 'If we don't utilise this window of opportunity and this momentum, it's an opportunity lost amongst many in the near past. We don't want to see that again,' said Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari. Death toll Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 56,412 people, also mostly civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry. The United Nations considers these figures to be reliable.
