Authorities of FM college tried to cover up, protect teacher: Balasore MP Sarangi
BALASORE: Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi on Saturday alleged gross negligence and callousness on the part of FM (Autonomous) College authorities in handling a harassment complaint that culminated in a student's attempt of self-immolation. The BJP MP claimed that the college principal and the Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) failed to act responsibly despite complaints by the victim. 'This matter had been ongoing for several days. When it was brought to my notice, I personally called the principal and the police. The principal said the ICC was probing the matter and assured that the enquiry would be completed in five days,' Sarangi told mediapersons. The girl along with her friends had met him days earlier and revealed she had previously attempted suicide due to continued harassment by assistant professor Samir Kumar Sahu. 'After receiving the news of the self-immolation, I tried calling the principal multiple times, but he did not respond. I immediately rushed to the college to review the ICC report and was shocked to find glaring discrepancies between the report and statements made by the complainant, her father and other students. The report was clearly biased,' he alleged. Sarangi termed the ICC's report as 'Samira Chalisa', saying it appeared to glorify the accused professor rather than hold him accountable. 'One absurd claim in the report was that he taught yoga to students who came late to class. Is that even logical?' he questioned. The MP also raised serious concerns about the integrity of the ICC's functioning. 'When I checked the records, I was stunned. The proceeding register had only signatures and there were no details of discussions or conclusions. Yet the principal claimed the committee had met five times. Every effort was made to shield the assistant professor,' he said.

ECI says 'large number' of foreigners found during Bihar voter list revision
Election commission officials on Sunday claimed that field-level functionaries of the ECI have found "a large number of people" from Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar during house-to-house visits made for the ongoing intensive review of the voters' list in Bihar. District Election Officer and District Magistrate Aman Sameer carries out a house-to-house visit in various panchayats under the Ekma Assembly Constituency to verify the work being done by Booth Level Officers (BLO) and review the ongoing activities related to the special intensive revision campaign of the voter list, in Saran on Thursday. (District Administration Saran - ) According to a PTI report, the names of illegal migrants will not be included in the final electoral roll to be published on September 30 after a proper enquiry into such people is conducted after August 1. Citing ground reports, ECI officials said that booth-level officers found "a large number" of people from Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar during house-to-house visits. The Election Commission will eventually carry out a special intensive revision of electoral rolls across India to weed out foreign illegal migrants by checking their place of birth, the PTI report added. Meanwhile, the ECI said that as of Saturday evening, 80.11 percent of electors in Bihar had submitted their forms. The commission is moving ahead to complete the collection of Enumeration Forms (EFs) before the stipulated time, July 25. The Bihar assembly polls are due in October or November this year, and the voter list revision has already become a major topic in state politics. Assembly polls in five other states—Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal—are due in 2026. The move assumes significance in the wake of a crackdown in various states on illegal foreign migrants, including from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Opposition flags Bihar voter list revision The opposition parties have campaigned against the voter list revision in Bihar, with the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, recently joining RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav in a rally in Purnea. Congress has called the exercise 'dangerous and bizarre'. Party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said EC's plan to consider voters who were added after 2003 as 'suspects' was an 'arbitrary and legally questionable move.' He made the remarks while addressing a press conference at Indira Bhavan, the Congress headquarters, on Saturday. The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the ECI to also consider Aadhaar cards, voter IDs and ration cards, as acceptable proof of eligibility for inclusion in electoral rolls in its ongoing revision of the list, even as it agreed to examine whether the poll body's exercise violated legal provisions or could potentially lead to mass disenfranchisement ahead of assembly elections due later this year.

"People Living In Fear": Ex Minister's Friendly Fire Over Bihar Murders
Patna: A day after BJP ally Chirag Paswan targeted the Nitish Kumar government over the string of murders in Bihar, the JDU-BJP ruling alliance and Bihar police have drawn friendly fire from senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ram Kripal Yadav. Speaking to the media after a BJP leader was shot dead in Patna last night, Mr Yadav said the frequent incidents of murder are a cause for concern. Flagging police response to the crimes, he said people "are living in fear" and it is the administration's responsibility to prevent the recurrence of such crimes. BJP leader Surendra Kewat, 52, was working in his field when two bike-borne men shot him last evening. He died during treatment. The murder comes a week after prominent businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead outside his Patna home. The incidents of murder have prompted the Opposition -- and some allies too -- to target the Nitish Kumar government ahead of the Assembly polls due later this year. Ram Kripal Yadav, once a trusted aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, switched to the BJP in 2014. He served as a Union Minister between 2014 and 2019. He lost the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from the Patliputra seat to Lalu Yadav's daughter Misa Bharti. In his remarks to the media, Mr Yadav said Surendra Kewat was a devoted BJP worker. "This is a very unfortunate incident. Murders are happening frequently in Patna and this is a matter of concern. I demand that the criminals be arrested immediately. The family members said police reached the spot two hours after the incident. This is a question mark. If police are not swift, how will criminals be arrested?" he asked. He also demanded compensation for the family. Referring to the murders of businessmen Ramakant Yadav and Gopal Khemka, he said, "People are living in fear. They don't feel safe. It is the administration's responsibility to give security to people." Asked about Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha's allegation that the Opposition RJD was behind the crime surge, Mr Yadav said this must be investigated. The former Union Minister was also asked about BJP ally Chirag Paswan's attack on the Nitish Kumar government. "He is upset. Incidents are happening frequently. A politician is also a human being. Yes, we are with political parties and have responsibilities, but we cannot hide the truth. Innocents and businessmen are being murdered. If a politician is worried, it's legit. The government is ours, but what are the officials doing?" he said. Earlier, Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan targeted Bihar police in a post on X. "How many more murders will Biharis face now? It is beyond understanding what the responsibility of the Bihar Police is," he said. The remarks are being seen as signs of unease within the ruling alliance as it preps for the upcoming election. It can also be seen as LJP (Ram Vilas) posturing before seat-sharing talks to pressure its bigger partners, BJP and JDU, for a good deal in the negotiations. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Chirag Paswan clocked a 100 per cent strike rate, winning all five seats his party contested.
