Third test between Wallabies and British and Irish Lions delayed by lightning

SYDNEY (AP) — The third rugby test between Australia and the British and Irish Lions has been delayed by a severe lightning storm over Sydney on Saturday.
Shortly after halftime with the Wallabies leading 8-0, and while play had been stopped for a serious head injury to Lions lock James Ryan, a match official entered the field and advised referee Nika Amashukeli to escort the players from the field.
The big screen at Sydney's 90,000-seat Olympic Stadium displayed a message for spectators in rows 1 to 19 to immediately vacate their seats and seek cover on the lower concourses.
Play was expected to resume at 9.50 p.m. local time.
The visitors are 8-0 on their Australian tour and are seeking to be the first Lions squad to record an unbeaten tour since 1974.

AFL fans call out Demons over Simon Goodwin's farewell snub as club great in shock

Melbourne Demons great Garry Lyon has been left shocked at the timing of Simon Goodwin's axing with three games left to go in the season with suggestions the veteran is unlikely to coach a farewell game. On Tuesday morning it emerged the Melbourne Demons had sacked Goodwin following a convincing 83-point win over West Coast. There were suggestions Goodwin would be let go if Melbourne lost to West Coast on the weekend. The demolition of the lowly Eagles seemed to quell the noise momentarily with a decision to be made at the end of the season. Although the win didn't save Goodwin from the axe with the timing of the move leaving supporters in shock. Goodwin coached Melbourne to their first premiership in 57 years years back in 2021 having taken over from Paul Roos. But Goodwin had only managed to coach the Demons to seven wins in 2025 and performances across the last few years had prompted calls for change. And Lyon admitted he was struggling to get his head around the decision to pull the trigger with three games left to go. Speaking on SEN Radio as the news dropped, Lyon suggested there might not be a farewell game for Goodwin who deserved a send off having delivered the side their only premiership in recent times. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Radio. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' And fans have echoed Lyon's confusion to why the decision happened now. Many feel the Demons had left the decision so late it was only right to let Goodwin see out the season and have a farewell. With little to play for, the fans could have got behind the coach with three games left if they let him ride out the season. Unfortunately, it appears Goodwin and Melbourne will go their separate ways immediately with the supporters most likely not given an opportunity to get behind their premiership-winning coach one last time. I think a parting of ways at the end of the season would have been more respectful to our only premiership coach in nearly 70 years but a change was you Simon Goodwin for helping turn our club around and the memory of 2021 ❤️💙@melbournefc #AFL — Julian Cross (@CrossJulian) August 4, 2025 Shocked by the decision to sack Goodwin right now. Hope he is remembered as a legend of the footy club. What the Demons do next is very interesting…Do they see this as an opportunity to challenge again with a fresh voice? Or is it a total wipe out of star players? — Matt Nevett (@matt_nevett_) August 4, 2025 Can't but feel like we could've waited until the end of the year & given our only living premiership coach a bit of a send off. 100% the right call but jeez this man delivered something that I never thought we'd ever see. Thanks Goody that day in 2021 will be forever the greatest — James Plunkett (@jplunkett21) August 4, 2025 Lyon felt the call came prematurely with Goodwin's stature as a premiership winner going to see him reach the end of the season. 'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added. 'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four. He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure. This is a massive call.' Melbourne making moves with Simon Goodwin axing After Melbourne capitulated in round 20, Goodwin shut down outside noise and said he was fully committed to the job at hand. "I feel incredibly supported by the board, I have for nine years," Goodwin said last Thursday. "We've been able to go through these challenges before with clarity and strength and stability to create success." Goodwin won the 2021 flag with one of the youngest teams of the modern era and started their 2022 title defence in solid form. However, Goodwin couldn't get past the early stages of the finals since the flag having exited in straight sets in 2022 and 2023. Last year, Melbourne finished in 14th and they currently sit in 12th and are out of finals contention. The Demons hierarchy may have called time on Goodwin's season with three games to go in a bid to get ahead of their rivals in the search for a new head coach. There are suggestions a number of teams could be looking at change for the 2026 season and the Demons have made their move first. Only last week, AFL great Matthew Lloyd claimed he didn't think a win against the Eagles would ease the pressure on Goodwin's tenure as coach. "I don't think so, no," Lloyd said when asked on Nine's Today Show. "Moreso if they lost that game, that could spell the end for Simon Goodwin you would think, if they were to lose to West Coast who have won one game for the season. They have been off for a couple of years now, there is something not quite right."

'Unbelievable': Cricket world erupts over 'courageous' scenes in historic Test drama

Injured England bowler Chris Woakes has earnt praise around the cricket world after a courageous decision to bat on a tense final day of the fifth Test against India at The Oval, that saw the tourists snatch history in the most dramatic fashion. India - led by the impressive Mohammed Siraj - took four wickets in the final hour to help bowl England out for 367 and seal an astonishing six-run victory that left the cricket world in disbelief. The win was the narrowest in India's Test cricket history and saw one of the most gripping series of recent memory finish at 2-2. England began a drizzly final morning of an enthralling five-Test series needing just 35 wins to clinch a 3-1 series victory with four wickets in hand, but Siraj led the way for India as the hosts were denied in extraordinary fashion. Siraj was on fire on the final day, taking the wickets of Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton, before bowling Gus Atkinson to complete a five-wicket-haul and completely a scarcely believable win. When Prasidh Krishna sent Josh Tongue packing without troubling the scorers, it saw Woakes walk out to the crease in one of the bravest and more remarkable scenes that will live long in the memory. Woakes was wearing a sling tucked underneath his jumper after dislocating his shoulder while fielding during the Test match, but showed his dedication to the England cause by walking out to face the fired-up India attack one-handed. England still needed 17 runs to complete victory and Gus Atkinson did everything he could to protect his teammate by keeping him off strike. Atkinson belted Siraj for six to see England close in on their victory target. But with an epic Test series win in England's sight, the tail-ender was undone by a superb yorker from Siraj that clattered into the stumps and sealed India's historic win, sparking wild scenes at The Oval and leaving cricket fans in awe of one of the great Test cricket spectacles. "With 60, 70-odd runs to win with seven wickets in hand you don't get to see many games like this," India captain Shubman Gill said after his side's against-the-odds victory. "Very happy to get this over the line, a little bit of luck for us." Cricket world in awe of courageous Chris Woakes display It was fitting that Siraj was the hero for India with his five-wicket haul in the final innings after he squandered a chance to remove England centurion Harry Brook for 19 on day four, in an error that proved very costly. But as incredible as Siraj's heroics were on the final day, it was the sight of Woakes coming out to bat in a sling that left an indelible mark on viewers and saw the England quick's courage celebrated around the cricket world. Respect For my Man Chris Woakes ❤️🫶#ENGvIND #ENGvsIND #INDvsENG — Kannada 💛❤️ Cityzen 💙 (@Kavirajamarga21) August 4, 2025 This Test had it all ❤️ pressure, passion, pain, and pride!🙏M Siraj mind-blowing 5-wicket spell turned the game🔥Woakes showed unreal courage, batting with a broken shoulder for the team.🫡India held on for a 6-run win. Test cricket wins again! 🏆#INDvsENG — Shahrooz Ahmad (@shahroozahmadd) August 4, 2025 England might have lost the match today, But Chris Woakes Won All the Hearts out there ❤️💯🛐#ENGvIND — Jota Lives On 🕊️❤️ (@BasidIkbal) August 4, 2025 Incredible seeing Woakes come out to bat with a dislocated shoulder. Six-run win India's narrowest ever victory. What a series! #ENGvIND — Matthew Burgess (@1matthewburgess) August 4, 2025 Heroic from Woakes. Iconic from Siraj. A series that truly had everything I think 2 a piece is about right. Pleasurable viewing. #ENGvIND — ktrimpie (@ktrimpie) August 4, 2025 Things I wasn't expecting to see on a cricket field: Woakes with his arm in a sling basically acting as a batting runner. Unbelievable stuff #ENGvIND — Davis "LIONS" Harrigan (Digi) 🦁 (@DeadlineDavis) August 4, 2025 Unbreakable spirit. All heart ❤️Chris Woakes walks out to bat for England 🙌 #WTC27 #ENGvIND — Prikshit Natu (@PrikshitNatu29) August 4, 2025 Ben Stokes proud of England despite heartbreaking loss More than 7000 runs were scored in the five Tests, but when England needed fewer than 50 for the final five wickets, they faltered. The last time that happened to them in a fourth innings while chasing victory was in 1902, against Australia at Old Trafford. But England captain Ben Stokes - who was ruled out of the fifth Test with injury after being his side's most effective bowler of the series - praised his side's injury-ravaged pace attack. England were also deprived of Jofra Archer to go with Woakes' dislocated shoulder and Stokes said he was proud to run India so close in the end. "When one of your bowlers goes down so early in the game, the role of the other seamers changes," the England skipper said. "Even in the second innings, the heart and desire they showed was amazing. There were many what-ifs in the last five days, makes the game great, but all (coach) Brendon (McCullum) and I asked was to give it everything. (Josh) Tongue, (Gus) Atkinson and (Jamie) Overton showed it."
