Who will win the AL and NL Wild Card races?
Yahoo Sports senior MLB analyst Jake Mintz and senior MLB analyst Jordan Shusterman break down which teams could secure the Wild Card spot for both the National League and the American League. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Let's quickly do the American League wildcard. Currently, the Yankees and Red Sox have those top 2 spots, and the Mariners are 1.5 up on Tampa, 3.5 up on Texas, 4 up on LA and Minnesota, 4.5 on Kansas City and Cleveland. Who finishes in these 3 spots? I don't know, man, at least this is pretty difficult to pick at some point. I do think the Mariners are going to be one of those teams because of what I did. I know Tampa was my pick before the season to finish in that top spot. But I think with how much better the rest of the division is playing and with what they're gonna have to deal with on the road the rest of the year, I'm a little skeptical they're gonna be able to hang on. But I think these are the four teams we're really talking about. Maybe Texas has a late push, although I'm skeptical. All these other teams, let's just say like Texas down. The team I believe the most in, weirdly enough, is Minnesota, even though I don't believe in them at all, if this makes sense. They're the ones that, if you look at the run differentials, played better than their record compared to these other teams. We haven't done a lock card yet. So right now, Brewers are up 4. They're 4 games, OK, of safety. So that is uh 1.5 up on the Mets. The Mets are then uh. I believe that is 2.5 up on the Padres. Padres are up a half game on the Giants, 1.5 on the Cardinals and 2.5 on the Reds, then falls off. Diamondbacks, Marlins, Braves, and eventually the Rockies are down there somewhere, um. Do the Brewers, Mets and Padres finish in these spots? Man, I have gone back and forth on the Padres and Giants all season, because again, we talk about sort of like those bankable skills. They have two all-star starting pitchers in Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. And the lineup just isn't very good. And I think that Des will heat back up and, kind of give them another well above average bat. The Padres, the Padres are so funny. Every year, it's like, man, they got some good players and then sometimes you tune in, you're like, who's getting everyday at bats for them? How is this possibly the plan? But, um, yeah, I think these three are probably it, but maybe you have more faith in the Giants. I don't know. Close

Young Red Sox star Roman Anthony enjoying being a ‘first-timer' at historic Wrigley Field
Anthony batted third and was the designated hitter Friday as the Red Sox looked to restart their engines after the All-Star break and to recapture the momentum of their 10-game winning streak heading into it. Seeing so many players at the workout told veteran shortstop Trevor Story the team was raring to go. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'The boys are ready to just be together again,' Story said. 'I think we miss each other. Believe it or not, we're with each other every single day, but when you go three or four days without it, it's like, 'Man, where the boys at?' You know? I think it's just a sign that the boys love being together. We love the vibe that we have, and obviously shows the focus that we want to start the second half.' Advertisement For manager Alex Cora , the high attendance reflected a team 'finding our identity. Obviously, throughout the season, we were learning who we are. And there was a lot of stuff that happened, injury-wise, and the [ Rafael Devers ] trade, and all that. And little by little, we found our place.' Advertisement Decision soon on Houck With one simple word — 'yes' — Cora threw some doubt on to what comes next for pitcher Tanner Houck , whose rehab assignment expired Friday, leaving the team with a decision to face in the next day or so. The 29-year-old righthander spent the past two months on the injured list with a right flexor pronator strain, but now the Sox need to decide where he best fits: in the rotation, in the bullpen, back to a new rehab clock, or, as Cora wouldn't rule out, optioned to Triple A Worcester. Asked directly before the game if optioning Houck was on the table, Cora said, 'Yes,' before adding, 'Bres [chief baseball officer Craig Breslow ] is not here, so you know, they'll make a decision and we'll inform you guys.' Houck, an All-Star last season, struggled in nine starts this year, posting an 8.04 ERA before the injury. 'I believe I'm a starter. I've always felt that way. I'll continue to feel that way for the rest of my career,' Houck said before the break. 'I've proven that I can start in this league, even at the highest level. I know that my first nine starts don't define me and what my talent is and what my ability is.' Advertisement Bregman easing back in Alex Bregman was in the lineup Friday, batting second, and Cora said the 31-year-old third baseman rebounded well physically from his return last Friday but that he will ease his way back into playing every day. The plan, Cora said, is for Bregman to play the first two games of this series and again in the next series at Philadelphia, then have two consecutive games off before the Sox return home to face the Dodgers. 'Hopefully by [that] Friday, he gets a full go,' Cora said. Center of the action Ceddanne Rafaela was in his customary center field spot, but don't be surprised to see another appearance at second base in the series finale in Philly … Cora said he enjoyed a quiet break, 'stayed in the area with the family and just hung out and then came here to this beautiful place, you know, to start the second part of the season.' … The Sox have quite the test coming up with the Cubs, Phillies, and Dodgers, three straight division leaders. 'We'll see how we stack up,' veteran Rob Refsnyder said. 'Three great teams now.' Tara Sullivan is a Globe columnist. She can be reached at

Will the Mets be more aggressive at trade deadline than the Phillies?
Yahoo Sports senior MLB analyst Jake Mintz and senior MLB analyst Jordan Shusterman discuss how the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies will operate differently at the trade deadline. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript These two front offices and these two pobos are likely to operate very differently, uh, ahead of the deadline. Now, I would love to be proven wrong, but if you're wondering which team is going to maybe include a top prospect quicker than the other, it's probably gonna be Dave Dombrowski and not David Stearns. Now, maybe I'm wrong, maybe the Mets are more in a mode where they're willing to push, push, push, push, push. But if I'm picking between the two, who's more likely to say, "Screw it. Here's Aiden Miller." like, it's probably Dave Dombrowski, right? I think it's closer than you think. For a couple reasons. So last year was really David Stearns' first deadline with the Mets, and it's easy to forget this now, but the Mets were not in it at the deadline, right? They were kind of on the fringes, and so he tried to do the middle-ground safe deadline strategy, got Jesse Winker and Phil Maton and Ryan Stank, right, but he didn't do anything to move the needle in a big way necessarily because they weren't that close at the time. I think that is not the case now, right? They are in it, very much so. The window is firmly open. Pete Alonso may be playing for another team next year. And anytime that you are in the mix and your team is good enough to win the World Series, I'm not saying Stearns is going to do anything outrageous, but he has this really strong farm system to trade from with a number of redundancies in it, right? They don't need Luis Angel Acua, Brett Beatty, and Mark Vientos, and Ronnie Mauricio. You could totally understand him trading from that surplus and trying to get some bullpen help, uh, in return. As far as the Phillies go, I am fascinated to see what they do, whether they think this offense is good enough as it is, or whether they need to add to it. The bullpen is going to get reinforcements. That is an absolute freaking duh. Dave Dombrowski is not going to ride into October with this current group. Close
