Election Commission fact checks Congress allegations on voters' list access, calls claims ‘incorrect'

Claims made by the Congress party in a social media post are incorrect, the Election Commission of India said on Friday, hours after the grand old party posted a video of its leader Priyanka Gandhi criticising the poll panel over not providing political parties with the voter list. In a message posted on X, the ECI said that it prepares the voter list before every election with full involvement of all political parties. The poll panel also said that the District Election Officers (DEOs) share the voter list twice with authorised representatives of all recognised political parties, including the Indian National Congress (INC). In a rather thorough fact check by the ECI, it further added that the first draft of the voter list shared with the parties for inviting objections and then the second and the final draft of the voter list is shared after objections are decided by the Election Registration Officers (EROs). 'Further, after the last day of nominations, voter list is again shared with the candidates,' the EC said in its post on X. Earlier in the day, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi had called for the ECI to respond to allegations made against it and provide political parties with the voter list, alleging that the poll panel is not being transparent. "They should respond to the allegations. They should provide us with the voters' list, which we have been asking for. There should be transparency. It is a democracy. All political parties should have access to that information. Why is it not being provided?" Priyanka Gandhi told reporters outside the Parliament. Her comments come after the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accused the poll panel of "cheating" during the voter list revision process in a Karnataka constituency. He also claimed to have "100 per cent proof" of it. "Today we have 100 per cent proof of Election Commission allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. When we decide to show it to you, it is 100 per cent proof. We just looked at one constituency and we found this. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency this is the drama. Thousands of new votes, aged 50 or 60, 65 (are there) in one constituency. Then voter deletion, people who are way above 18," ANI quoted Rahul Gandhi. (With inputs from agencies.)

Speaking For Gaza Not Patriotism: Bombay HC Rejects CPI(M) Plea For Protest On Palestine Issue

The Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) seeking to protest the alleged "genocide" in Gaza by Israel. A division bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad stated that speaking for Gaza and Palestine is not patriotism and asked the petitioner to instead raise voices for causes within India. The bench also questioned why the petitioner does not focus on issues in their own country. "Our country has several issues to deal with... We don't want anything like this. I am sorry to say, you are all short-sighted... You are looking at Gaza and Palestine... Why don't you do something for our own country? Be patriots... Speaking for Gaza and Palestine is not patriotism... Speak up for the causes in our own country... Practice what you preach..." Live Law quoted Justice Ghuge as saying. The bench also expressed curiosity about why the party wants to protest something happening thousands of miles away rather than issues within India. "We are curious... You have no issues with respect to our own country... something productive for our own country... They are fighting 1,000s of miles away, and you are showing concern for Palestine, Gaza, etc. You can take up social and local issues like flooding, drainage getting blocked, illegal parking... Why aren't you protesting such issues?" Live Law quoted Justice Ghuge as saying. The bench asked the petitioner, "Do we have so much time to hear such a case when hundreds of cases of our citizens are listed?" "Do we have so much time to spend hearing such a matter when we have hundreds of cases of our citizens listed? Are these not our constitutional issues?" Live Law quoted Justice Ghuge as saying. Thousands of people in Gaza have lost their lives due to Israel's ground offensive and air strikes, which commenced in October 2023 as a reaction to Hamas' attacks on Israeli cities.

Rahul Gandhi terms Telangana's survey visionary, inclusive

Heaping praise on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has said the Telangana model of socio-economic survey is visionary, inclusive and powered by 21st century data. Mr. Rahul Gandhi's praise for the Telangana CM and his cabinet colleagues came for the second time in two days as he addressed OBC leaders at a meeting in New Delhi on Friday. 'It is social justice 2.0 and it will define how India moves forward,' Mr. Gandhi said. The Congress leader recalled how Ms. Sonia Gandhi's fight to create the State of Telangana cemented deep emotional connection to the people, the language and the culture of this beautiful State. 'I am filled with immense pride as I witness the remarkable efforts of the Congress government in conducting the Socio-Economic Caste Survey,' he pointed out. 'Their commitment to a sincere, inclusive, and consultative process has set a new benchmark — one that should guide future Census exercises across the country,' he added. Mr. Gandhi also noted that based on the survey, the Telangana government had taken a historic step in recommending 42% OBC reservation in local body elections and educational institutions. Mr. Revanth Reddy and other Congress leaders had already drawn praise from Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Priyanka Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge for the landmark socio-economic survey.
