Vedanta, controlled by billionaire Anil Agarwal, has long been one of India's biggest corporate political donors. In FY23, it donated ₹155 crore to various parties, and ₹123 crore the year before that. The company did not disclose the party-wise breakup for those years.
Between 2017 and 2022, Vedanta also contributed ₹457 crore to political parties through now-scrapped electoral bonds. These bonds had allowed anonymous, unlimited donations from individuals and companies. The Supreme Court declared them unconstitutional last year.
Live Events
Aside from direct donations, Vedanta channels political contributions through its Janhit Electoral Trust, one of several such trusts run by major corporates. Others include the Progressive Electoral Trust (Tata), People's Electoral Trust (Reliance), Satya Electoral Trust (Bharti), Paribartan Electoral Trust (MP Birla Group), and Samaj Electoral Trust (KK Birla Group). Bajaj and Mahindra also operate electoral trusts.
Fees to parent firm also rise
The annual report also showed a sharp increase in fees paid by Vedanta to its parent company for brand use and strategic services.
The group paid ₹2,397 crore in brand and other fees in FY25 to Vedanta Resources Ltd's wholly owned subsidiary VRIL, up from ₹2,326 crore in FY24.
This stems from a brand license and strategic service agreement with the London-listed parent, which entitles it to receive between 0.75% and 3% of the turnover of Vedanta and some of its subsidiaries. With effect from April 1, 2024, the agreement was assigned to VRIL.
As part of the arrangement:
Vedanta sublicensed the brand agreement to
Hindustan Zinc Ltd
(HZL) at 1.7% of its annual consolidated turnover
It also sublicensed to Ferro Alloy Corporation Ltd (FACOR) at 2.5%
These sublicensing deals led to an expense of ₹582 crore in FY25, up from ₹477 crore in the previous year.
Vedanta Resources Plc holds a 56.38% stake in Vedanta Ltd, which is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

L-G orders probe into AAP's free coaching scheme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ABC) of the Delhi government has been asked to probe alleged corruption into the free coaching scheme started by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Education Minister Ashish Sood said on Wednesday. Lt Governor V K Saxena has ordered the probe, he added. Under the Jai Bhim Pratibha Vikas Yojna SC, ST and OBC students were provided free coaching at private institutes for competitive exams. Addressing mediapersons with SC/ST Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj, Sood alleged that a bill of Rs 145 crore was prepared during Covid-19 pandemic in 2021-22 for payment to private coaching institutes. He added that the previous AAP government neither sought any list of students from the coaching institutes nor verified if they were being provided coaching. 'Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had recommended that ther allegations be probed,' he said. 'The scheme, initiated in 2018, aimed to provide free coaching by transferring government funds directly to coaching institutions. AAP leaders insulted Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy and turned a welfare scheme into a nexus of corruption… In 2018, 4,900 students were supposed to receive coaching, and in 2019, the number was 2,071. However, during the pandemic, AAP leaders colluded with the coaching mafia. Originally allocated a budget of Rs 15 crore, the scheme saw a massive spike in billing, with coaching institutions submitting claims of Rs 145 crore between July 2021 and August 2022… Upon investigation, it was revealed that coaching institutions provided data for 13,000 students, but only 3,000 could be verified. The rest had no supporting documentation or register entries,' said Sood. The AAP, meanwhile, accused the BJP government of 'systematically dismantling' welfare schemes. 'The BJP is using corruption allegations as a smokescreen to justify the closure of these schemes despite not a single allegation being proven to date… From shutting down mohalla clinics, ending free bus travel for women, to withdrawing free medicines from government hospitals and moving towards the privatisation of Delhi's water supply, every step is calculated to erase AAP's model of governance,' AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said. The party, in a statement, also alleged that BJP had not taken a single step to address the issues faced by ordinary people. 'The women of Delhi, to whom the BJP had promised Rs 2,500 per month, are still waiting for the money. Instead of fulfilling this guarantee, the BJP has delivered betrayal,' it said.

Odisha CM must step down after student's death: JMM

1 2 3 Ranchi: JMM on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi over the death of a college student in Balasore district a day before. The 20-year-old student, who set herself on fire protesting alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against her department head in Balasore, succumbed to her injuries late Monday night after a 60-hour battle for life. The girl initially reported the matter to the college principal on June 30 and posted her ordeal in a social media post, tagging authorities and reported the matter to the police on July 1. Addressing a press conference in Ranchi, JMM's general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya demanded that the CM must take accountability and step down. He also clamied that violence against women are rising in states where they are in power. "The death of the student in Balasore is once again a reminder how BJP ruled states are increasingly becoming unsafe for women. The woman fought hard to save her dignity, but the BJP govt in Odisha didn't take any concrete action against her perpetrators in the first place before it became too late. We wonder how the CM is still in office there," said Bhattacharya, citing how women continue to suffer right from Manipur to UP, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar among others. "BJP's Beti Bachao campaign has now turned into Beti Jalao. As usual, PM and home minister of this country are conveniently silent," he said. "It is beyond anyone's imagination that a student had to face torment in her own institution. Even after raising the complaint, attempts were on to hold her wrong. Who will give justice to the deceased student," he added. Hitting back, BJP spokesperson Ajay Sah said, "JMM should be ashamed of its selective politics. It remains silent when criminals are from their alliance ruled states but pounces on any unfortunate incident in a BJP-ruled state. When students at Kolkata's R J Kar Medical College were protesting after a rape incident, JMM's leadership was silent. Examples are abound. Does JMM determine the seriousness of a crime based on the party ruled state? Even in Jharkhand, instances of rape and women abuse are surfacing daily. It should talk on its own govt. BJP govt in Odisha will ensure the strictest action."
