The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Civil Services Examination, which is considered to be one of the toughest exams in India. It is held in three phases: prelims, mains, and interview. In this article, we will talk about the success story of IAS Anurag Kumar, who, despite failing in Mathematics, never gave up his dream to clear the UPSC CSE exam.
Anurag Kumar hailed from Katihar district in Bihar. He began his education in a Hindi-medium school. Switching to an English-medium school after class 8 posed significant challenges, but he remained determined to achieve his goals. A major setback came when he failed the maths pre-board in class 12. Undeterred, he poured all his efforts into preparing for the final exams. His hard work and perseverance paid off, as he secured over 90% in his final board examinations.
Anurag Kumar pursued his graduation at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), one of the most prestigious colleges in India. His journey was not without difficulties, as he struggled and failed in several subjects during his graduation. However, he renewed his commitment to his studies, successfully completed his degree, and then went on to enroll in a post-graduation course.
While pursuing his post-graduation, Anurag Kumar was inspired to prepare for the UPSC examination. With unwavering dedication, he focused intensely on his studies. His hard work paid off when he secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 667 in his first attempt in 2017. Determined to improve his rank, he decided to try again in 2018 and achieved an impressive AIR of 48.

Halfway through session, classes V and VIII students go without NCERT textbooks

Chandigarh: It has been three months since the beginning of the new school session and summer break is also over. However, Class V and Class VIII students in government schools across Chandigarh are still waiting for several updated NCERT textbooks. Despite repeated assurances and advance payments by the education department, the books are yet to arrive in many schools, forcing teachers and students to rely on stopgap arrangements. This delay is not new to the city's school system. In March-April 2024, parents and students in Chandigarh struggled to find NCERT books for Classes III and VI. There were no stocks in bookstores till mid April, 2024. This has been the pattern over successive years after the rollout of NEP-aligned content, leading to repeated disruptions in critical middle school grades. The shortage is most severe in Classes V and VIII, which are part of the phased rollout of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020-aligned textbooks. In Class V, only English and Hindi books are currently available. Mathematics and Environmental Studies (EVS) are missing. In Class VIII, English textbook is available while Hindi and Science books are still awaited. To make matters worse, several subjects, including Class VIII Sanskrit, Social Science for Class V, and Mathematics for Class VIII are not even available on official and online platforms, leaving schools with no access to revised content. "It's July and we still don't have the new textbooks," said a government school teacher in the city. "For some subjects, we are using last year's books. For others, we're giving handwritten notes or projecting content from earlier versions." Parents too are growing anxious, saying that children are relying on digital content. Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, director, school education, said that the government is aware of the delays and is working closely with NCERT to expedite delivery. "We are in constant touch with NCERT and advance payments have been done already. Text is being updated and that is why it takes time. We have book banks in schools and we see to it that students do not lose out on education," he said. Officials have advised schools to make do with existing materials and digital content where possible.

'I reject the hegemony of the novel': Banu Mushtaq

Banu Mushtaqm, the 2025 International Booker Prize-winning author of Heart Lamp - Selected Stories, delved into short story writing and how she rejects the dominance of the novel while delivering a lecture at the Mount Carmel College Foundation Day celebrations on Saturday. 'No story is short,' said Ms. Mushtaq, 'I reject the hegemony of the novel. Short stories require a different kind of mastery; in a small canvas, you have to paint the full truth,' she said. On translation of her stories in Kannada to English, she said, 'I wanted my voice to reach beyond Karnataka. I wanted Western readers to feel our lives. And I believed, even if no one else did.' Encouraging youngsters to write, she said, 'You don't need to wait for anyone to approve your voice. You don't need a perfect background; you need to live, observe, experience, and write. You will be criticised, misunderstood, doubted. But one day, someone will read your story and say that it's theirs too'. Ms. Mushtaq reflected on how her early education was shaped by religious expectations, societal prejudice, and limited access to language. 'I studied in an Urdu school for two years without learning a single alphabet,' she recalled. 'My father cried when he saw how little I had learnt. But he never gave up on me,' she said. Responding to a question, she said she writes about sex, politics, and religion because society tells women not to. 'That's precisely why I must,' she said, adding 'My writing is not just imagination. It is documentation'.
