Golden Bachelor Mel Owens, UCSF grad and ex-NFL star, says he will cut women over 60

Mel Owens, a 66-year-old former NFL linebacker and UCSF graduate, was recently named the next star of ABC's ' The Golden Bachelor.' But even before filming begins on the show's second season, Owens is already drawing criticism for declaring he won't date women his own age.
In an appearance on the 'In the Trenches' podcast this week, Owens revealed that he told producers he's only interested in dating women between the ages of 45 and 60.
'Just being honest,' Owens said. 'If they are 60 or over, I'm cutting them.'
He recounted a lunch with an executive producer who pushed back.
'They said, 'Mel, this isn't the 'Silver Bachelor.' It's the 'Golden Bachelor.' They're going to be hot, don't worry about it,''' the producer reportedly replied.
Owens also expressed concern about the physical fitness of the contestants.
'They've got to be fit because I stay in shape,' he said. 'I told them, try to stay away from the artificial hips and wigs and that kind of stuff.'
Owens emphasized he had limited influence over the casting process beyond his preferences.
Still, he insists he's looking for more than appearances. His ideal partner, he said, is 'someone who's a lifetime learner, who enjoys to love life, work out and stay fit, eat and have fun. Be energetic and live life.'
A Detroit native and standout linebacker at the University of Michigan, Owens was drafted ninth overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 1981. After a nine-year NFL career, he earned a law degree from UCSF Hastings and now practices in workers' compensation and sports law.

Why ‘Jerry Maguire' perfected the player-agent dynamic

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and ESPN's Mina Kimes break down the 1996 movie starring Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. - and how the film was spot on in regards to the important relationship between star athlete and representative. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts , Spotify , YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript 6 is something I did rewatch, uh, 3 years ago, not that long ago, and that is Jerry Maguire. Advertisement First of all, the performances are really what make it. I mean, I think ityou don't want it won Cuba Gooding Jr., you see why he won the Oscar for. It's a really incredible performance. It's a really nuanced performance as well. The relationship between him and his wife, and their dealings with the agent and the way they talk about Gary, his contracts and injuries, and itI, I found again, upon rewatching it, someone now who lives in this world finds that to be very accurate. And, you know, it's funny because I was like watching with my husband who's not really into football and sort of the business of football, and he was asking me like, would it actually happen as well? Advertisement I was like, actually, yeah, like the way they're talking about his contract. And whether or not he should roll the dice or take a lower deal, and what it means. And I was like, this is actually pretty accurate. And, um, so I think it's just nice, beyond the drama of it, and it'sit's at heart a romantic comedy, of course, but it is nice to see the business of football and being a player I thought represented pretty accurately. Even just the agency politics is really thatI thought was like, as I watched it as an adult, obviously, I, I probably watched it as a kid, but it was like one of those, like, whatever, and then, but as an adult I was like, oh wow, that's actually kind of real, like as far as how that kind of unfolds, and no, that's a great point, too, because the even just talking about like the player-agent dynamics, everyone always thinks, oh yeah, they're always on the same page, too, like everyone thinks, oh, they're always in lockstep, and people fight with their agents way more than people realize, and you know, and the whole dynamic of the agent works for the player or the person, you know, not even just including athletes here. Advertisement That works for it, but that's also a dynamic because it's, I need you, but I don't need you, you know, and that can lead to the frustration incentives align. Agent want them to maximize the money or take the risk? And of course he is his only client, that's the case's president, and I think the way the agent, when Jerry goes out on his own, separate from the Cuba Gooding Jr. part, and he, um. Uh, uh, tries to get the number one overall draft pick. I can't remember the name of the quarterback, uh, and they lie to his face and end up going with J. Moore's character; that's all super stuff like that happens all the time.

Three Tigers ranked as the top players at their position in EA Sports College Football 26

Mel Kiper explains why Clemson will have multiple first-round picks in 2026 NFL Draft Clemson football fans will have no shortage of star power to rely on when they boot up EA Sports College Football 26 this summer. Several Tigers landed among the highest-rated players in the game, giving virtual rosters plenty of firepower on both sides of the ball. Leading the group is quarterback Cade Klubnik, who has been named the top-rated signal-caller in the game with a 92 overall. That puts him ahead of LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and Penn State's Drew Allar, showing the level of belief the developers have in Klubnik's potential to lead Clemson's offense this fall. On the defensive side, T.J. Parker and Peter Woods are among the most dominant players in the entire game. Both defensive linemen were slotted at the very top of their positions, with Parker earning an impressive 95 overall rating and Woods just behind at 94. Their high marks make them not only key pieces in real life but also must-have defenders in the virtual world for anyone looking to build an elite defensive front. Cornerback Avieon Terrell also received national recognition, checking in as the No. 4 corner in the game with a 92 overall. His rating reflects his breakout potential and how important he's expected to be for Clemson's secondary this season. Altogether, Clemson's group of highly rated players should make the Tigers one of the more fun teams to use in the game's long-awaited return. With top-end talent on offense and defense, fans will get a chance to see just how far they can take Clemson in pursuit of digital trophies — a fitting mirror to the real championship aspirations swirling around Dabo Swinney's team heading into the 2025 season.
