Protests, Politics Erupt In Odisha After Student Who Self-Immolated Over Harassment Dies
The Opposition parties, including the Congress, on Tuesday unitedly called for 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17 over the death of a 20-year-old student from Balasore.
Amid the ongoing tensions in Odisha over the death of a 20-year-old female student from Balasore, the opposition parties, including the Congress, on Tuesday unitedly called for 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17. The parties have also demanded the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation in connection to the case.
'Joint opposition has resolved that Odisha will be closed on July 17," CPI(M) leader Suresh Panigrahi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
The CPI(M) leader attacked the state government and state that the victim appealed to the Odisha government, the local MP and MLA, Principal, District Collector, SP and the Higher Education Minister of state and centre, but nothing happened.
'We demand a strict judicial investigation of the whole incident, the Higher Education Minister should resign, and some action should be taken against the local MLA and MP," he added.
The 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Odisha's Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation, died on Monday, confirmed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar.
The student set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident.
Opposition Attacks Odisha Govt
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday called the death the student an 'organised murder by the BJP's system" and accusing the BJP-led state government of failing to protect the victim.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that the student was subjected to repeated threats, torments and humiliation instead of receiving justice.
Taking to X, the Congress leader wrote, 'The death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the BJP's system. That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment, but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her."
'As always, the BJP's system continued to shield the accused and forced an innocent daughter to set herself on fire. This is not suicide; it is an organised murder by the system. Modi ji, whether in Odisha or Manipur, the daughters of the nation are burning, breaking, and dying. And you? You remain silent. The country doesn't need your silence; it needs answers. India's daughters need safety and justice," the post added.
Earlier in the day, the Congress workers staged a protest outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar following the death of the student. Police later detained the protesting workers.

Why ED raided Anil Ambani's Reliance Group-linked 50 companies
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday carried out extensive raids at 35 locations across India as part of a probe into alleged loan fraud involving companies of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). Anil Ambani, chairman of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group(File Photo/Reuters) As previously reported by Hindustan Times, citing officials familiar with the matter, the searches were conducted at premises linked to over 50 companies and 25 individuals. The raids are part of a money laundering investigation initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), based on two FIRs originally filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in September 2022. Yes Bank loans to Reliance firms under scrutiny The CBI cases pertain to loans extended by Yes Bank to Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL). Both FIRs name former Yes Bank chairman Rana Kapoor. An officer from the probe agency said, 'Preliminary investigations have revealed a well-planned and thought-after scheme to divert or siphon off public money by cheating banks, shareholders, investors, and other public institutions.' He further added, 'The offence of bribing bank officials, including founder of Yes Bank [Rana Kapoor] is also under scanner." A second official involved in the investigation said ED suspects illegal diversion of around ₹3,000 crore in loans issued by Yes Bank between 2017 and 2019. 'We have also found that just before the loan was granted, the Yes Bank promoters [Kapoor] received money in their concerns. The ED is investigating this nexus of bribe and the loan,' the officer added. Another ED official highlighted 'gross violations' in loan approvals, pointing to systemic lapses in Yes Bank's internal processes. 'Credit approval memorandums (CAMs) were back-dated, investments were proposed without any due diligence or credit analysis in violation of the bank's credit policy,' the officer said. Loans routed through shell firms and group companies Investigators have uncovered evidence of loan diversions to multiple group companies and shell firms, flouting the terms of lending. The agency also identified several red flags, including: Loans to financially weak entities Absence of proper documentation Borrowers with common addresses and directors Loans disbursed on or before the application date Evergreening of loans Misrepresentation of financial data 'These findings clearly indicate a pattern of financial mismanagement and manipulation,' an officer said. The ED is also probing a sharp increase in corporate loans disbursed by RHFL, which jumped from ₹3,742.60 crore in FY 2017–18 to ₹8,670.80 crore in FY 2018–19. Apart from the CBI, several regulatory and financial institutions including the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), National Housing Bank, National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), and Bank of Baroda have also provided inputs to the ED as part of the investigation. According to a Reuters report, shares of Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power dropped by up to 5% on Thursday following reports of ED probe. Reliance Group's statement In response, Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power issued a statement: 'The media reports appear to pertain to allegations concerning transactions of Reliance Communications Limited (RCOM) or Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL) which are over 10 years old,' the companies said. They further added, 'RCOM is undergoing Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process as per the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 since over 6 years. RHFL has been fully resolved pursuant to the judgment of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. Similar allegations as those set out in the media reports are sub-judice and pending before the Hon'ble Securities Appellate Tribunal, as per publicly available information.' Rahul Gandhi warns EC over voter list changes: 'We are coming for you'
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday issued a sharp warning to the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of voter roll manipulation during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha declared that the opposition would hold the poll body accountable. 'I want to send a message to the Election Commission: If you think you are going to get away with it… you are mistaken. You are not going to get away with it, because we are going to come for you,' Gandhi said after the Lok Sabha was adjourned. Claims of electoral fraud in Karnataka constituency Gandhi further alleged that the ECI had permitted irregularities in at least one Karnataka constituency, pointing to skewed voter additions. He claimed that while names of young, eligible voters were being deleted, individuals aged 50, 60, and 65 were being added. 'Today we have 100 per cent proof of the Election Commission allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka. We just looked at one constituency and we found this,' he said. Opposition terms revision drive 'murder of democracy' Gandhi was joined by leaders from parties including the Samajwadi Party and DMK in condemning the revision exercise. The opposition claims the SIR process disproportionately targets voters from marginalised communities and could suppress anti-government votes ahead of the Bihar elections. Opposition MPs staged protests in Parliament premises, holding placards that read 'SIR is the murder of democracy' and chanting 'Justice, justice, justice'. They continued their protest in both Houses for a fourth consecutive day, demanding a full debate on the revision process. Gandhi reiterated that the ECI was failing in its constitutional role. 'The Election Commission is not functioning as the Election Commission of India. Today they made some statement — this is complete nonsense,' he added. CEC defends drive, cites constitutional responsibility Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar defended the revision, stating that a clean and accurate voter list was foundational to democratic integrity. 'Isn't a pure voter list being prepared by the Election Commission through a transparent process, the foundation for fair elections and a strong democracy?' he said. Kumar also noted that retaining invalid or outdated entries in electoral rolls would violate constitutional principles. (With agency inputs)
