Two dead, many injured in Barabanki temple stampede
The Barabanki police said the incident occurred after a monkey tugged at an electric wire, causing it to fall on a tin shed.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has taken notice of the incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
'He has directed the district administration officials to expedite the proper treatment of the injured and relief operations,' the chief minister's office posted on X in Hindi.
According to local officials, the two deceased were identified as Prashant Kumar (16) and Ramesh Kumar (35).
The state government has announced immediate relief of ₹5 lakh to the family members of both the deceased.
There was a rush from 1am onwards at the temple on the third Monday of the Hindu holy month of Sawan. Over 2000 devotees were there at the time of the incident.
It was an accident and rescue operations were promptly initiated following which no more casualties were reported, said additional director general (ADG) of police, Lucknow zone, Sujit Pandey who rushed to the spot under the Haidergarh police station limits, nearly 40 kilometres from the Barabanki district headquarters after the CM's directives. Pandey inspected the incident site as well as crowd management measures.
Most of the injured people, or those who fainted due to the crowd rush, are back home after first aid, said Pandey who also ordered videography of the site.
He said normalcy had returned at the temple and devotees are having darshan in a routine manner.
District magistrate Shashank Tripathi said a stampede-like situation was reported at the Ausaneshwar temple during 'Jalabhishek at around 2.30 am'.
'Devotees were offering prayers when a monkey jumped onto an electric wire, causing it to fall on a shed. This led to an electric current passing through the structure. Medical treatment of the injured is underway. Around 19 people were injured, with two in a serious condition.'
Barabanki chief medical officer (CMO) Avadhesh Yadav told media persons that 19 injured individuals were brought to the Haidergarh Community Health Center (CHC), where two were declared dead. A few others were then referred to Trivediganj CHC, while one was sent to the district hospital for further treatment.
The Barabanki stampede comes a day after a similar incident in Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple where eight people died.
On January 29, a stampede occurred during the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj during which several people lost their lives.
On July 2, 2024, 121 people, mainly women and children, died in a stampede after a religious congregation in UP's Hathras.

The order in Ayodhya follows a high-level videoconference chaired by Chief Minister Adityanath on Sunday, where he instructed district magistrates and police officials to strictly monitor drone activity in light of 17 FIRs and 29 arrests linked to drone-related rumours.

A viral video has triggered widespread outrage online after a man was seen eating chicken at an Iskcon-run vegetarian restaurant 'Govinda's', despite clear instructions from the vendors that it was associated with a "temple". The footage, which could not be independently verified by the TOI, captured the chaotic scene as the man held out a half-eaten piece of chicken to stunned diners before erupting into a loud chant of 'Free the chicken!' The incident began with the man walking in and asking the shopkeeper, 'Is this a vegan restaurant?' The shopkeeper replied, 'Yeah.' Seeking further confirmation, the man pressed, 'So there's no meat, no nothing?' To which the staff reiterated, pointing to the sign board outside, 'No meat, no onion, no garlic.' The shopkeeper, attempting to clarify further, added, 'It's a temple,' referencing the restaurant's affiliation with Iskcon, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which follows strict vegetarian dietary practices in line with its religious beliefs. Palghar murder convict absconding for 3 years arrested in Punjab
Last Updated: Palghar, Aug 6 (PTI) A man convicted in a 2016 murder case in Maharashtra's Palghar district has been arrested from Punjab after absconding for more than three years, police said on Wednesday. The accused, Shankar Jagdish Mukhiya alias Samosewala, frequently changed his name and identity to evade detection, they said. He had been convicted for the murder of one Dilip Basnet on September 15, 2016 in Nalasopara area here, senior police inspector Sameer Ahirrao said. The incident occurred when the accused attacked Basnet with a sharp weapon after he allegedly made obscene remarks against the former's wife. The Waliv police had registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and a court subsequently sentenced Mukhiya to imprisonment, a police release said without specifying the jail term duration. He was released on parole from the Thane Central Jail in 2022 (during COVID-19). But as the parole period expired on May 7, 2022, the accused failed to return to jail and went missing, the release said. A separate case was then registered against him under IPC section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension), the police said. Recently, based on a credible information, a special police team was sent to Punjab. The accused was traced to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in Punjab and arrested on Monday, the police said.
