Indias PM believes the platform will contribute to a balanced multipolar world order
BRICS is a crucial platform for fostering cooperation and collaboration in the Global South and is exploring ways to promote the interests of emerging economies, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modisaidon Wednesday.
Modi's comments come ahead of the BRICS Summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7. "As a founding member, India is committed to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies," Modi said. "Together, we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order."
BRICS was initially established, primarily as an economic group, in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010. In 2024, the bloc extended full membership to Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia became a full member in 2025. Over 30 nations have applied to join the influential organization. Modi left Delhi on Wednesday for a five-nation visit to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.
"I am confident that my visits to the five countries will reinforce our bonds [and] friendship across the Global South, strengthen our partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in the multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM," Modi said.
In June, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told news agency AFP that "strong sentiments" in the Global South regarding the perceived unfairness of the present international order have fueled adesire for change.
In addition to being a founding member of BRICS, New Delhi is also continuing to engage Western countries in what has been called a policy of "strategic autonomy." The South Asian nation is a member of the Quad, a diplomatic group that includes Australia, Japan, and the United States, along with India. Jaishankar is presently in Washington for a meeting of its foreign ministers.

BN eyes comeback in Lumut with Zambry as potential candidate

MANJUNG: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has hinted at naming Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir as the Lumut parliamentary seat candidate in the next general election. The Barisan Nasional chairman is confident that the party will reclaim the Lumut parliamentary seat, as well as the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats. "We will take them back. This is not rhetoric, this is a fact. Zambry, don't be disheartened by the 363-vote loss. "Don't forget, I won by only 348 votes. I have already forgiven the voters in Bagan Datuk. Forgive the voters in Lumut as well. "If he becomes a minister again, it won't be as 'the honourable senator' but, God willing, as 'the honourable Datuk Seri Diraja', representing Barisan Nasional as a member of parliament," he said. In the last general election, Zambry, who is BN secretary-general, lost the Lumut parliamentary seat to Perikatan Nasional candidate Commander (Rtd) Nordin Ahmad Ismail by just 363 votes. Zahid said four prerequisites must be met in order to reclaim the Lumut parliamentary seat. "It comes with conditions. The Lumut Umno division and our friends in Lumut must be united. "We must work together to strengthen unity among ourselves. Don't be divided, don't differ in opinion. "No more of the old culture — backstabbing, blaming top leaders for everything. We point (one) finger, but four fingers point back at us. "I remind all of us, myself included, enough is enough," he said at the Umno Lumut division meeting in Dewan Merdeka here today. Also present were Perak Umno chief and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and Zambry, who is Lumut Umno division chief. The second prerequisite, said Zahid, is to show respect and care for partners in BN and in Pakatan Harapan. "Yes, we acknowledge that MCA and MIC are currently being tested. The Chinese and Indian communities may not be with MCA and MIC right now. "If they are, it's only a small number. But they are going through a tough time. In the past, they helped us when we were struggling," he said. For the third prerequisite, Zahid reminded delegates to let go of outdated mindsets and accept current political realities. "Enough with our old ways. What is our culture? We think that just because we are part of the government, we must push and demand for this and that. "Just as we were once dominant for 62 years, now we are only part of the government. Yes, we can make requests, we can push but we have limitations. "Within those limitations, we must remember that the people are watching us. They are evaluating us, observing whether we can still be trusted," he said. He added that the final prerequisite was to dominate social media and engage with voters more strategically. "Social media is the new battleground. Umno Youth and Puteri must lead the digital narrative. Reaching voters through relevant, respectful, and convincing digital content is critical to rebuilding public trust.

The event was part of PM Chinh's ongoing trip to the Latin American nation to attend the expanded BRICS Summit and engage in bilateral activities. The PM expressed deep appreciation for the affection the Brazilian people and nation have extended to President Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam. Chinh noted his belief that building on the strong ties between Vietnam and Brazil, the present and future generations of both countries would continue to carry forward the values and legacy left by President Ho Chi Minh and previous generations. He also hoped for shared determination to elevate the bilateral relations to new heights, for peace and development cooperation, aiming to bring prosperity and happiness to the people of each country and region, and the world at large, as envisioned by President Ho Chi Minh. In 1912, during his journey in search of a path to national salvation, President Ho Chi Minh worked aboard a French ship and fell ill, prompting him to disembark at the port of Rio de Janeiro for medical treatment. While there, President Ho Chi Minh established close ties with the workers' movement of the Porto trade union, laying the foundation for friendship and cooperation between the two nations at the beginning of the 20th century. PM Chính, his spouse, and the delegation of Vietnam set foot at Galeao Airport in Rio de Janeiro City earlier on the day. Representing Vietnam at the BRICS Summit 2025 as a partner country – the 10th partner country of BRICS, PM Chinh is scheduled to attend and speak at the summit's high-level sessions on topics such as strengthening multilateralism, economic and financial issues, artificial intelligence, environment, climate change, global health. On this occasion, he will have bilateral meetings with leaders of the participating countries and organisations, thereby affirming Vietnam's role, wish, and responsible contributions to this multilateral mechanism while further deepening Vietnam's cooperation with BRICS members and international organisations. This is also the third time in three consecutive years that PM Chinh has come to Brazil. Aside from the expanded BRICS Summit, he will also engage in bilateral activities in Brazil, aiming to promote multifaceted cooperation, especially in economic affairs. - Vietnam News/ANN

Controversy brews over Nurul Izzah's ‘silent' efforts for Indian community

A CONTROVERSY is brewing after PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar defended her 'quiet approach' to addressing longstanding issues faced by the Indian community. It drew criticism from MIC deputy president M Saravanan, who has demanded proof of her efforts to support the community. Now, the Member of Parliament for Batu, P Prabakaran has offered to mediate by proposing a roundtable to try to resolve the conflict. Explaining her point, Nurul Izzah said, 'For the longest time, I have chosen to work quietly because I believe in substance before spectacle.' On Thursday, she insisted that her silence does not equate to inaction. She cited year-long roundtables with economists, civil society groups, and community leaders that developed proposals including technical training hubs, preschool education policies, and entrepreneurship incubators under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). However, Saravanan has challenged her claims, demanding proof of concrete outcomes. 'So, we ask Nurul Izzah, if you are indeed working for the community, please start by disclosing what has been done or proposed on the matriculation intake issue. Let the Indian community see for themselves whether your silent efforts have translated into real, visible outcomes,' Saravanan said. He warned against repeating MIC's past mistake of remaining silent on community demands during BN's rule. 'MIC has submitted an eight-point agenda for the 13th Malaysia Plan, outlining clear and measurable reforms to address long-standing challenges faced by the Indian community,' Saravanan added. Amid the clash, P Prabakaran has offered to mediate by proposing a roundtable involving the government, opposition, civil society, and Indian community leaders to 'objectively evaluate existing objectives and policies' and form inclusive solutions. P Prabakaran said finger-pointing was not constructive, and that a more mature approach was required. 'As such, I propose a roundtable be held soon,' he said in a statement yesterday. Prabakaran said, adding that a joint forum could resolve tensions threatening Madani government unity. —July 6, 2025 Main image: Bernama
