MIRI (June 14): The construction of the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge is set to become a key catalyst for tourism and economic development in northern Sarawak, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the cable-stayed bridge is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with full operations slated to begin by April next year.
'Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time from Limbang to the Brunei border, enhancing cross-border connectivity,' he said during a site visit today.
The project aligns with the state government's broader strategy to deepen ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam, complementing efforts such as the recently established Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei (STATOB).
'Currently, Sarawak and Brunei enjoy strong trade relations. With STATOB's presence and this new bridge, we're reinforcing bilateral cooperation. We've already reached an agreement with Brunei to jointly develop the region,' Abang Johari added.
He noted that the bridge will serve as a vital tourism corridor, providing easier access for Bruneian and international visitors through Bandar Seri Begawan, which will be just a 30-minute drive from Limbang once the bridge is operational.
'This will position Bandar Seri Begawan as a gateway for tourists to explore northern Sarawak, with seamless access to destinations like Gunung Buda and Mulu National Park,' he said.
He also revealed that the state government is actively developing supporting road infrastructure, including a new route from Limbang to Gunung Buda, which will improve connectivity to the Unesco-listed Gunung Mulu National Park.
'Gunung Buda is part of the Mulu range, and on the southern front, we are building roads from Miri to Marudi.
'The bridge to Marudi is completed, and the road will soon extend to Long Terawan in Mulu, which will eventually connect to the Gunung Buda road.
'This integrated road network will greatly improve tourist mobility and promote eco-tourism in both Sarawak and Brunei,' he said.
Separately, the Premier proposed enhancements to the Limbang Museum, including the incorporation of historical and developmental video presentations covering both Limbang and Lawas.
'The Limbang Museum holds valuable historical records from the past to present day. I suggest that we include development videos to reflect the progress and legacy of both Limbang and Lawas,' he said.
The Premier was accompanied State Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; Deputy Transport Minister, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah; State Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail; Batu Danau assemblyman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang; Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki; and Limbang Division Resident, Unos Tambi. abang johari brunei connectivity economy lead Sungai Limbang Bridge

KDJA journalists explore Mulu Pinnacles for Sarawak Day

MULU: A group of 10 local journalists from various media agencies has embarked on a four-day expedition to Gunung Api in Mulu National Park, organised by the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA). The event, held in conjunction with Sarawak Day on July 22, aims to showcase the state's unique tourism offerings, including the UNESCO-listed Mulu Pinnacles. KDJA president Ronnie Teo stated that the expedition continues the association's annual climbing initiative, which began in 2018 at Mount Kinabalu. He emphasised the Sarawak Premier's support in encouraging media professionals to push their limits beyond their usual roles. 'This year, we chose the Mulu Pinnacles as our challenge, exclusively for KDJA members. We also hope to maintain our collaboration with the Sarawak Government for future editions,' Teo said in a statement. Participants include representatives from The Borneo Post, Bernama, Dayak Daily, Suara Sarawak, CatsFM, See Hua, and TVS. The itinerary includes visits to Deer Cave and Lang Cave, a nine-kilometre trek to Camp 5, and the main ascent to the iconic limestone formations. The Sarawak Government backs the programme as part of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's efforts to promote the state's tourism ahead of Sarawak Day.

Crypto Review: Bitcoin Holds Steady Ahead of US$40 Billion Options Expiry

Bitcoin ended the last week of June largely flat, trading in a tight range between US$99,700 and US$108,300 from June 23 to June 27, as traders brace for a massive US$40 billion options expiry. The world's largest cryptocurrency began the week under pressure, briefly dipping below US$99,000 on June 23 amid heightened geopolitical tensions. However, sentiment quickly rebounded following a ceasefire in the Middle East and sustained inflows into US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), pushing prices back above US$107,000 by June 27. By the end of the week, Bitcoin was trading at approximately US$107,088, down 0.8% from June 26, as profit-taking set in and market participants adopted a wait-and-see approach ahead of the high-stakes expiry event. Other major cryptocurrencies also saw mild declines, with Ethereum, Solana and XRP slightly retreating alongside Bitcoin as the broader market entered consolidation. Despite the near-term caution, analysts remain optimistic. A weakening US dollar, easing geopolitical risks and continued ETF-driven inflows have created a relatively constructive backdrop for digital assets. Moving forward, market watchers expect increased volatility due to the options expiry. A decisive breakout above the US$108,000-US$109,000 resistance zone could mark the beginning of Bitcoin's next leg higher, while failure to hold US$105,000 may trigger a short-term pullback. As the second half of 2025 begins, investor focus remains on macroeconomic signals, ETF flows and regulatory clarity, all of which will shape the trajectory of the ongoing crypto rebound. Related

China's Xiaomi receives almost 300,000 SUV pre-orders in minutes

Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Lei Jun, co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, speaks during the launch of the Xiaomi YU7 SUV car in Beijing on May 22. BEIJING: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi received almost 300,000 pre-orders within an hour for its first sport utility vehicles in what the company said was a 'miraculous' moment for the industry. Lei Jun, founder and CEO of the electronics-turned-car company, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. 'My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lock-in orders,' Lei said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch on Thursday night. 'We may be witnessing a miracle in China's automotive industry.' The company's electric vehicle division said later on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (about $35,000), within the first hour of sales. Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares soared eight percent at one point before paring their gains but ending at a record high. The Beijing-based commercial tech giant made its first foray into car-making with its SU7 EV model last year, part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. Initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. Premier Li Qiang used the World Economic Forum in Tianjin this week to outline China's ambition to become a 'major consumption powerhouse', emphasising policies to stimulate demand for high-value goods such as electric vehicles.
