Sarawak poised to play pivotal role in realising Asean Power Grid, says Premier

The Premier expressed strong confidence in the state's capability to support the ambitious regional energy integration project. He highlighted the positive reception from delegates at the recent 43rd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME), hosted here recently, adding they were able to witness the state's role in building Asean. He said Malaysia's current chairmanship of Asean provides a strategic opportunity to bolster the nation's contributions, especially through Sarawak, towards establishing the Asean Power Grid. 'I've had a brief discussion with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and I hope that one of the strategies that we adopt will realise the vision to have the Asean Power Grid, which will drive economic advancement for Asean—particularly through Malaysia's contribution. 'With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), we are optimistic that this energy project can be implemented successfully, God willing,' he said at the 2025 state-level Gawai Dayak Dinner last night. He also congratulated Anwar and the federal Cabinet for propelling Malaysia's stature while chairing Asean this year, earning recognition from Asean member states as well as external partners. One of the standout moments came from the Raban Betong 2025 contingent, which drew widespread attention – and praise from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg – with their futuristic display featuring a robotic dog and a humanoid robot, both dressed in full traditional Iban 'ngepan' (traditional attire). The high-tech presentation was a striking example of how cultural identity can evolve in harmony with modern innovation. Earlier in the day, the sacred 'Mamat' ritual was performed in the lobby of the Tun Jugah Building, setting a solemn tone before the parade festivities. Second Sg Limbang Bridge to boost cross-border tourism, economy in northern Sarawak, says Premier

MIRI (June 14): The construction of the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge is set to become a key catalyst for tourism and economic development in northern Sarawak, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said the cable-stayed bridge is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with full operations slated to begin by April next year. 'Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time from Limbang to the Brunei border, enhancing cross-border connectivity,' he said during a site visit today. The project aligns with the state government's broader strategy to deepen ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam, complementing efforts such as the recently established Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei (STATOB). 'Currently, Sarawak and Brunei enjoy strong trade relations. With STATOB's presence and this new bridge, we're reinforcing bilateral cooperation. We've already reached an agreement with Brunei to jointly develop the region,' Abang Johari added. He noted that the bridge will serve as a vital tourism corridor, providing easier access for Bruneian and international visitors through Bandar Seri Begawan, which will be just a 30-minute drive from Limbang once the bridge is operational. 'This will position Bandar Seri Begawan as a gateway for tourists to explore northern Sarawak, with seamless access to destinations like Gunung Buda and Mulu National Park,' he said. He also revealed that the state government is actively developing supporting road infrastructure, including a new route from Limbang to Gunung Buda, which will improve connectivity to the Unesco-listed Gunung Mulu National Park. 'Gunung Buda is part of the Mulu range, and on the southern front, we are building roads from Miri to Marudi. 'The bridge to Marudi is completed, and the road will soon extend to Long Terawan in Mulu, which will eventually connect to the Gunung Buda road. 'This integrated road network will greatly improve tourist mobility and promote eco-tourism in both Sarawak and Brunei,' he said. Separately, the Premier proposed enhancements to the Limbang Museum, including the incorporation of historical and developmental video presentations covering both Limbang and Lawas. 'The Limbang Museum holds valuable historical records from the past to present day. I suggest that we include development videos to reflect the progress and legacy of both Limbang and Lawas,' he said. In a keynote address, 'Renewable Energy Sarawak: Powering Sustainable Growth', delivered by Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki at the 18th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Exhibition and Conference (SNEC PV) in Shanghai, China, Abang Johari hailed energy security and affordability as the key pillars of the state's long-term development agenda. Advertisement 'Sarawak aims to achieve 10 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity by 2030, and 15GW by 2035, positioning the state as a renewable energy leader in the region. 'Sarawak currently has an installed capacity of 5,898 megawatts (MW), with over 60 per cent coming from hydropower, supported by thermal generation to ensure energy security. 'Reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy is essential to meet the growing demands of our people and industries,' he said, as quoted in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) repport. Abang Johari said the 2023 amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance was a significant step in accelerating the development of renewable energy. Abang Johari also highlighted the state's push for solar energy, citing the successful commissioning of the 50MW Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm in December last year – the first hydro-solar hybrid initiative in Malaysia. 'Sarawak is targeting 1,500MW of solar generation capacity by 2030 and is exploring more largescale floating solar projects in collaboration with regional and international partners. 'We are committed to making Sarawak the 'Battery of Asean' by exporting renewable energy to our neighbours. 'The success of our crossborder electricity export to West Kalimantan in 2016 has spurred plans to expand energy connectivity to Sabah, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. 'These efforts contribute to the development of an integrated Borneo Grid and, eventually, the Asean Power Grid,' he said. The ongoing SNEC PV Conference features over 3,000 exhibitors representing 95 countries, and serves as a key platform for policy updates, market trends, and global energy stakeholder engagement. Kuching to host international seminar on climate change in July

KUCHING (June 10): An international seminar addressing the human dimensions of climate change will be held at Kompleks Islam Kuching from July 29 to 30 this year bringing together experts, policymakers, and thought leaders from across various sectors. The 'International Seminar on Humanity and Climate Change Crisis: A Multidimensional Perspective' is jointly organised by Majlis Islam Sarawak (MIS), the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), and the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty). According to a media release issued today, the two-day seminar aims to deepen understanding of the climate crisis through the lens of human-environment interaction, Islamic ethical teachings, and strategies focused on equity, inclusion, and resilience. 'The seminar is expected to attract up to 1,000 participants, including scholars, government officials, NGO representatives, and members of the public. Keynote addresses will be delivered by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Mufti of Sarawak, Sahibus Samahah Datu Kipli Yassin. 'Highlights of the seminar include high-level dialogues on environmental ethics, particularly from Islamic perspectives, as well as discussions on green technology, policy, and governance,' said the media release.
