JAIS denies approving controversial marriage programme in Selangor
JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad stated that while a clarification panel reviewed the programme, full approval was never granted.
In November 2022, JAIS formed a panel to investigate complaints from participants who alleged that certain activities violated Islamic teachings.
The panel reviewed a video used in the programme, which included a controversial technique for women aimed at strengthening marital intimacy.
The panel recommended revisions to ensure compliance with Islamic law and advised the organiser to consult religious authorities.
A disclaimer was also suggested, clarifying that the video was only for married couples.
However, Mohd Shahzihan stressed that this did not mean JAIS endorsed the entire programme.
'The organiser never submitted the revised module for final approval,' he said.
'Had they followed our recommendations, the recent incident at IDCC Shah Alam might have been avoided.'
JAIS is now working with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) to update guidelines for religious and spiritual programmes.
The revised rules aim to prevent future controversies by providing clearer standards for organisers.
Mohd Shahzihan urged the public to report suspicious programmes to JAIS, emphasising the importance of community involvement in upholding Islamic teachings.
Earlier, the organiser claimed its 2022 programme had JAIS approval after submitting clarifications.
However, JAIS maintains that only partial adjustments were reviewed, not full endorsement. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) is organising the Al-Quran Di Mana-Mana: Tilawah dan Tadabbur programme as part of its efforts to promote daily Quran reading among Muslims. Jakim director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the campaign is being held in conjunction with the 65th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), scheduled to take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from Aug 2 to 9. 'This campaign highlights tilawah (proper recitation) and tadabbur (contemplation) al-Quran, conveying the profound message that reading and reflecting on the Quran should not be confined to formal events alone, but can be embraced as a daily practice anywhere, on public transport, in the office, at recreational parks, or in public spaces, as part of the Islamic way of life,' he said here today. He spoke to reporters at the flag-off ceremony for participants of the Al-Quran Di Mana-Mana 2.0: Kuala Lumpur-Hatyai (Thailand) programme at the KL Sentral Electric Train Service (ETS) station. Sirajuddin said the campaign is not aimed at gaining popularity, but is a sincere call for society to return to the Quran as a lifelong companion, which is to be understood, felt, and reflected upon. He said the first segment of the campaign runs from July 29 to 31 in collaboration with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), utilising the ETS service from KL Sentral to Padang Besar, before continuing the journey to Hat Yai via the State Railway of Thailand. He said that throughout the trip, participants will engage in Quran tilawah, tadabbur and ibrah (wisdom) sessions, adding that these activities will continue at Islamic centres, mosques, surau, and community spaces in designated border areas, to enable participants to experience the message of the Quran in a deeper, more personal, and reflective manner. He added that various social and community service activities will also be carried out throughout the journey, including the distribution of aid to local communities and the waqf (endowment) of Quran copies to educational institutions, mosques, surau, and tahfiz centres. He said the second segment of the programme consists of a special Al-Quran Everywhere initiative in Bukit Bintang on July 31, carrying the message that the Quran should be upheld as a close and accessible guide for life, regardless of time or place.

Biggest foundation batch starts at UM

This marks the highest number of enrolments the varsity's foundation programmes have ever recorded. The students are enrolled in the Foundation in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Islamic Studies, and Islamic Studies and Science (APIDS) programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session. Twin brothers Wan Muhammad Nasril and Wan Muhammad Nasrul Wan Roslan, 17, from Kuala Nerang, Kedah, expressed their joy at finally entering their dream university. 'This is the first time my twin brother and I will be living apart because we're staying in different residential colleges. It's a bit sad since we've never been separated since birth, but seeing the campus atmosphere here makes me excited to start this new chapter,' said Wan Muhammad Nasril, who aspires to become an engineer. His brother, meanwhile, is interested in medicine. Foo Sin Ming, 17, from Cheras, also shared his excitement. 'I feel very fortunate to be at UM. My hope is to pursue my ambition in the banking or investment sector,' he said. For Shrikeshav Thevindran from Johor, joining the Foundation in Social Sciences programme is the first step towards his dream of pursuing a career in law. His father, Thevindran Kandasamy, expressed pride in his son's achievement. 'UM is Malaysia's leading university. Our family has always dreamt of our son studying here. Today, we came together as a family to celebrate his success. We hope he continues to excel in the field of law,' he said. Nur Amili Fitria Mohd Azmi described the opportunity to study at UM as an unexpected blessing. 'I'm proud to be pursuing my studies at the country's best university. My hope is to become someone who can make my parents and the nation proud,' she said. Welcoming the new foundation students on July 12, UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman expressed confidence that their one-year stint at the varsity would lay a strong foundation for their learning, critical thinking, character development, and leadership skills. Sandakan Islamic Centre 66% completed, targets December opening

Sandakan Municipal Council president Walter Kenson stated that the council is committed to completing this modern complex — inspired by Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman — by year-end, making it ready for use during next year's Hari Raya prayers. 'We are scheduling completion by the end of this year, ideally before year-end, so it can be fully operational for next year's Hari Raya. Our primary target is for the Sandakan Islamic Centre to be inaugurated and fully functional by Hari Raya 2026,' he explained. Walter added that the centre will feature designs, motifs and finishes from Uzbekistan, adapted to incorporate Sabah's local motifs. 'Progress has been very positive thus far, which is why we sought approval from His Excellency Tun Musa Aman for specific motifs, designs and finishes. Tun requested the incorporation of certain elements in key sections of the centre — particularly the prayer area, main hall and VIP waiting area — blending Uzbek designs with local Sabah motifs and styles,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu today. Meanwhile, Tun Musa expressed profound satisfaction in a statement on Thursday over the encouraging progress of the Sandakan Islamic Centre, which will become a significant landmark for Islamic development in Sabah's east coast. He noted that the project will not only serve as a centre for worship and education but also foster unity among Sabah's multiethnic and multireligious communities through inclusive and harmonious outreach. 'I extend my appreciation to all involved, especially the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) and the state government, for their commitment to community development and societal well-being. May the Sandakan Islamic Centre become a symbol of spiritual progress and unity in Sabah,' the statement read. Construction of the RM60 million Sandakan Islamic Centre began in 2017 on a 5.2-hectare site at Jalan Sungai Kayu, Sandakan, but faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and political instability in Sabah. Upon completion, the facility will include a kindergarten, tahfiz centre, administrative offices for JHEAINS, MUIS (Sabah Islamic Religious Council), and Baitulmal (Islamic Treasury), a multipurpose hall, and a prayer hall accommodating over 1,000 worshippers.
