Michigan State eliminates Harvard 64-50 in first round of women's NCAA tourney
Jocelyn Tate had 13 points as the seventh-seeded Spartans (22-9) advanced to the second round for the first time since 2019. Theryn Hallock added 10 points.
Michigan State meets second-seeded N.C. State (27-6), a 75-55 winner against 15th-seeded Vermont, in the second round on Monday.
Harmoni Turner had 24 points for 10th-seeded Harvard (24-5), which topped two Big Ten teams in November but couldn't pull off another victory against a power conference opponent.
The Spartans scored the game's first 11 points. Harvard closed to 26-25 in the third quarter, but back-to-back 3s from Ines Soltelo and Tate helped the Spartans bounce out to a 37-25 lead.
Harvard's Turner, who was averaging 31.3 points in four March games coming into the day, didn't have enough help on offense. Saniyah Glenn-Bello was shut out and fouled out with more than six minutes left. Lydia Chatira and Gabby Anderson combined for two points.
It was a big contrast for the Spartans, who a year ago fell into a big hole and lost 59-56 to North Carolina in the first round at Columbia, South Carolina.
Michigan State's second-round assignment comes in a building where N.C. State is 17-0 this season.

Former Wisconsin basketball star Nigel Hayes-Davis officially joined the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Roughly one month removed from the former Badger reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with the franchise, Hayes-Davis' journey back to the NBA is now official. For the first time since the 2017-18 regular season, the Ohio native will lace up during an NBA regular season this fall. Hayes-Davis' return to the United States' most coveted professional basketball league follows his hectic spring and summer run as a member of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in Turkey. To conclude the 2024-25 EuroLeague campaign, Hayes-Davis helped guide Fenerbahce to an 81-70 victory over Monaco in the final with a 23-point, nine-rebound performance. The output netted him EuroLeague Final Four MVP honors and the club's first title since 2017. After the historic run, Boston Celtics' head coach Joe Mazulla traveled to Istanbul for the Bachesehir - Fenerbahçe game in early June, reigniting Hayes-Davis' reality of playing in the NBA once more. The previous summer, Hayes-Davis earned a Turkish League Championship and MVP honor in Turkey's Basketbol Süper Ligi Finals, where he averaged over 17 points per game to snag finals MVP honors. That pair of runs served as enough evidence for an NBA squad to take a chance on the decorated college and European basketball star. The 6-foot-8 forward suited up in nine games for the Kings, Lakers and Raptors during the 2017-18 slate. Iowa football offensive lineman names favorite road venue in Big Ten
The Big Ten conference is full of difficult road venues to try to win at. From the Big House in Ann Arbor to the Horseshoe in Columbus to Kinnick Stadium, going on the road and winning in conference play is extremely difficult. Almost every team in the conference has a stadium that tests you and your resolve (sorry, Northwestern). But, certain stadiums and road environments rise above the rest and stand out to the players in the conference. Logan Jones, a preseason All-Big Ten center for the Hawkeyes this season, was one of Kirk Ferentz's representatives at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas. He was asked about which road Big Ten stadium is his favorite to play at. Jones gave an insightful answer, while also throwing a little jab at one of Iowa's biggest rivals. What is Logan Jones' favorite road Big Ten venue? When asked about his favorite Big Ten road venue to play at, Jones had this to say. "I like playing at Nebraska. They have a pretty cool stadium. It's a close game, it's a fun game. I like kicking field goals there, too," Jones said. Nebraska's Memorial Stadium can hold over 85,000 screaming and avid Cornhusker fans. It's one of the toughest places to play in the conference because of how loud it gets there. It makes sense that Jones picked that for his favorite Big Ten road venue. But, it's the last sentence of his quote that has Hawkeye fans laughing. While Nebraska leads the all-time series 30-22-3, it's been Iowa who has dominated the rivalry for the past decade. The Hawkeyes have won 10 of the previous 12 meetings between the two schools, including six in a row at Memorial Stadium. Two of the last three victories for the Hawkeyes in Lincoln have come on last-second, game-winning field goals, hence the last comment from Jones. It's a fun jab at one of Iowa's biggest rivals and should set things up well for the 2025 matchup between these two teams. Iowa and Nebraska square off once again on Black Friday this year. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Nov. 28 from Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. And who knows, maybe Jones will get the chance to be on the field again for another game-winning kick at Nebraska.
