The Mercedes E-Class Coupe is arguably more appealing to look at; it distinguishes itself from the saloon with a svelte profile and a different rear-end treatment, plus it offers a compliant suspension set-up and strong GT credentials.
BMW designed the Mk1 4 Series with driving enthusiasts in mind. Lower, squatter and more athletic than a 3 Series, it has the firm's absorbing rear-drive handling, with a great choice of engines available. It's no firecracker to drive, but is pleasant and refined thanks to its MLB Evo architecture. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is snappy and responsive, and coupled with a solid range of engines, the A5 is a relaxed cruiser. You can bag a facelifted 2022 20,000-mile A5 Coupe, with a 204bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine for aroud £22,700.
Like the exterior, the A5's cabin is attractive and subdued, rather than overly stylish. The quality is exceptional, though, and the materials are first-rate. While the overall design will be familiar to A4 owners, the low-slung, sportier driving position will not. Access to the rear seats isn't the easiest, yet they're roomier than you might expect for a coupe, and the boot is just 15 litres smaller than the A4 saloon's. At 450 litres, it's also a significant 50 litres larger than the C-Class Coupe's load bay.

Mercedes is known for upmarket, classy styling and cruising comfort, and these qualities have been distilled in the Mercedes E-Class Coupe. With curvier surfacing, chrome details and a tapered rear, it's a more adventurous design than the Audi. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
The driving experience is laid-back; it has a pliant ride and smoothes poor surfaces well, although the lifeless steering is a letdown. But the nine-speed automatic gearbox is smooth, while its short ratios offer strong in-gear punch. A 2019 27,400-mile 194bhp E220d, with a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds, is within budget at around £24,000.
The E-Class's interior is just as stylish as the exterior, with a swooping dash architecture, metal switchgear and lavish detailing throughout: the speakers for the optional Burmester stereo are a particular highlight. However, look more closely and the material quality isn't quite as consistent as its rivals', and the tech is ever so slightly off the pace. Advertisement - Article continues below
Mercedes' COMAND infotainment is cumbersome compared to those on the rival cars and standard kit isn't as generous as the Audi. It also has a smaller 400-litre boot, but overall cabin space is reasonable and the rear seats are easy to access thanks to the long doors and a relatively high roofline.

The first-gen BMW 4 Series may look broadly similar to the 3 Series on which it's based, but tweaks such as a wider stance and resculpted body panels give it much more presence. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
On the road, its well tuned rear-drive chassis is the most rewarding of this trio, with taut body control and direct steering encouraging the driver to get stuck in. The 4 Series isn't as cosseting as the C-Class over broken surfaces, but it isn't uncomfortable, either. For £21,500, you can buy a first-gen 2020 420d with 187bhp and 13,000 miles on the clock. The 2.0-litre diesel engine achieves around 50mpg.
While the 4 Series might be the most engaging car here from behind the steering wheel, the interior isn't particularly inspiring. The 4 Series makes do with a dull design and black plastic switchgear that doesn't have the same sense of occasion. It's very well built, but lacks the opulence of its competitors from Audi and Mercedes.
BMW's iDrive infotainment system is the most intuitive of the three, though, despite lacking some of the modern technology that is fitted to the Audi. The rear seats are usable for most adults, despite the car's swooping silhouette, and the boot capacity is definitely competitive, at a reasonable 445 litres.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - French artificial intelligence startup Mistral is in talks with investors, venture capital firms and Abu Dhabi's MGX to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $10 billion, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The company launched in June Europe's first AI reasoning model, which uses logical thinking to create a response, as it tries to keep pace with American and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development. The funding would accelerate the commercial rollout of Mistral's Le Chat chatbot and support continued development of its large language models, the report said. MGX and Mistral did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The startup raised 600 million euros in a Series B funding round that valued the company at 5.8 billion euros last year. Industry observers consider Mistral as Europe's best-positioned AI company to rival Silicon Valley leaders, though the French firm has yet to achieve comparable market traction or revenue scale. Mistral counts Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners among its investors.

The popular beer joint will be handing out the free booze in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to celebrate Beer Nation. The festival is launching this summer and hopes to bring the popular brew into "as many hands as possible". Celebrating all things beer, the event will serve litres of free beer and pints for as little as £1. To claim this offer, customers just need to sign up online via the company's website. In bars outside of England, pints will be sold for £1.59 to meet legal requirements. The festivities will include a wide range of brew s too - from the much-loved Punk IPA to a classic Lost Lager or Hazy Jane. American ambassador to Italy so 'displeased' with official Roman villa he lived aboard yacht and 'commuted via helicopter'
A Texas billionaire turned US ambassador to Italy was so unhappy with his new official villa in Rome he lived aboard his superyacht for weeks. Tilman Fertitta, 68, was nominated to the ambassadorship by Donald Trump in December and confirmed by the Senate in April. However, the hospitality tycoon and owner of the Houston Rockets did not move into his official Roman residence, Villa Taverna, until July 10 following a 'series' of renovations to the property. Prior to that, Fertitta had reportedly been helicoptering in to his engagements on land, much to the annoyance of locals, Airmail reports. A spokesperson for his company, Fertitta Entertainment, confirmed to the Daily Mail that the ambassador opted to live on his $150million yacht during construction to the historic residence. 'Ambassador Fertitta has been living in Villa Taverna since July 10 and couldn't wait to move in with his family,' the spokesperson said. 'Several weeks prior, however, during the construction improvements to the family quarters (which he paid for), required that he live elsewhere. 'Rather than a hotel, he chose to commute from his yacht to the embassy, which amounted to only 3.5 weeks.' His 77-meter Feadship-brand vessel, called Boardwalk, has 12 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a chef's kitchen, six bars, a large mosaic pool and a helipad, according to Robb Report. Information on the number of rooms and amenities inside the Villa Taverna is not publicly available, and it is unclear what renovations Fertitta had done to the place. 'No changes have been made to the Villa and he honors its architecture, its history, and is quite excited to reside there during his ambassadorship,' Fertitta's company spokesperson insisted. However, a separate news release from the embassy notes, 'a series of careful renovations' at the historic home. The fifteenth-century Villa Taverna, commissioned by Cardinal Consalvi, was first rented by the US Embassy in 1933, according to the State Department. Villa Taverna is known for its rich history, lavish outdoor gardens and expansive art collections. 'The Villa and its historical gardens are filled with valuable art from antiquity through the Renaissance, to the nineteenth century,' the State Department said. On Wednesday, the State Department announced that Fertitta unveiled a new American art collection at the villa. 'The Villa's new collection, curated in partnership with the State Department's Art in Embassies program, reflects his belief in art as a bridge between cultures—sparking dialogue, telling stories, and enriching shared space,' the department said. The collection features pieces by American artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Frederic Remington, John Singer Sargent and Hans Hofmann. Before he moved into the residence, Fertitta hosted an Independence Day celebration at the villa with Italian leaders. Fertitta was born in Galveston but is of Sicilian descent.
