Test-Driving The 2025 McLaren Artura Spider

Forbes09-05-2025
There are two phases to test driving a supercar. The first is the anticipation of its arrival - knowing you're going to make a giant leap from ordinary, functional vehicles to 'the Mighty Mac'as the Artura became known before and during its 3-day weekend test, and feeling that delicious excitement as the great day approaches.
2025 Artura
The Artura arrives, it is of course gorgeous, it is pristine - and it is purple. I've had yellow, red, orange and blue, never purple, lantana purple to be exact. (Not shown.)
For the first day, you are extra paranoid, as well you should be. It almost makes you ill, how concerned and focused you have to be. When you've over the novelty, the excitement and the looks you get, then the second phase arrives and you can just drive - and there, my friends, is the sweet spot. The looks of the Artura are classic, ultra-fine and stylish, naturally, but it is in the drive where the spirit comes into play. Let's take a look.
2025 Artura
*The McLaren Artura features a mid-engine layout built on a lightweight carbon fiber chassis, distinguishing it from traditional grand tourers.
*Its engine is a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 with a plug-in hybrid system.
*Horsepower is 690 hp, torque is 531 lb-ft, and it's mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.
*0-60 is accomplished in about 3 seconds and top speed is 205 MPG.
*Pricing starts at $273,800. With all options, it's $310, 308.
The nice man who brought me the car asked that I not go 205 MPH, and I didn't. Fuel economy is a not-bad 19 MPG combined, 45 MPH when considering the electric range. You can go up to 21 miles on electric-only. It offers multiple drive modes: Electric, Comfort, Sport, and Track.
2025 McLaren
It's minimal, and luxurious. There's a digital gauge cluster mounted on the steering column and slim carbon-fiber-backed sport seats wrapped in leather. (Alcantra.) The flat-bottom steering wheel fits well in the hands and an 8-inch touchscreen runs an underwhelming infotainment system that lags behind the car's high-tech pedigree.
One of my passengers was tall and extra-large and took some assistance getting in and out, but the deed was accomplished and off we went, so you don't have to necessarily be a svelte human to enjoy the Artura.
2025 Artura Badge
The Artura is available as both a coupe and my tester, the Spider or convertible. The top comes up or down in 11 seconds up to 31 MPH via 8 electric motors, but I didn't chance it - I pulled over to raise or lower the roof.
There is a button to push to raise or lower the suspension for when you meet speed bumps or other hazards to the underside of your front bumper. One must remember to use it not only when you are going over something, but often when you're simply pointed downhill. It was something of a bother to have to remember, but hearing silence - as opposed to a stomach-dropping scrape - when one drove over an obstacle was worth it.
When you start 'er up, it's automatically in electric mode - so no setting off car alarms or scattering birds. You must smash the brake pedal - as in 'all your might' to start the vehicle. At red lights, you also need to apply considerable pressure to the brake lest the car lurch forward. That got old quickly.
2025 Artura Badge
Once you're out in the open, free of traffic and photo-takers, it's a sublime pleasure of scent, sight and feel. Eventually your foot, hands and body are all in tune with the car. Put it into 'Track' and there it is, all the ferocity, all the noise you love, the grumble. It is not the GT - it is not Godzilla. But by the end of the test, that didn't matter. The pleasure is in the drive. It's also best done at night for the full experience, and it's as much a thrill to drive slowly as it is to smash the pedal. You and your passengers, top down, agree that it's a most pleasant experience - and isn't that what everyone wants, after all?
Since I didn't take the vehicle on a track, my experience was almost entirely as the 'daily driver,' and cruises to nowhere, with no launch control. But when you barge around town on your errands, you don't wish you had taken the Accord. You also don't feel like you want to do 200 MPH - it's not one of those vehicles that dares you to speed - but it's nice to know you could do it if you needed to.
The McLaren Artura is equipped with all the top safety features including Lane Departure Warning, Road Sign Recognition, Available Blindspot Monitoring and Cross-Traffic Detection and more.
2025 McLaren Artura
*The 3.0-liter V6 gets a 19-horsepower bump to 690 hp - an upgrade available for existing coupes - while the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission now shifts 25 percent quicker and the active suspension responds to driver input or changing road surfaces 90 percent faster thanks to improved electrical architecture.
*The 7.4 kWh battery pack's all-electric range has improved from 11 to 21 miles and the new drivetrain mounts reduce engine movement during aggressive maneuvers to boost the Artura's stability and confidence. A new 'spinning wheel pull-away' setting in the launch control system adds maximum drama to acceleration if and when you need it, cowboy.
Conclusion: The Artura is a thoroughly darling little monster, and worth its purple price.

Mercedes predicts €360mn hit from US tariff turmoil and China slowdown

US tariffs will knock over €360 million off the bottom line for German carmaking powerhouse Mercedes-Benz, with the company predicting 2025 sales well below last year's total. According to an earnings update published on Wednesday, second-quarter profits have already fallen 10% compared to last year and are expected to drop further by the end of 2025. EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) and earnings per share have both fallen by a staggering 68%. Quarterly sales in China — normally Mercedes' biggest market — also fell nearly 20 % year-on-year as domestic electric car brands got cheaper and more popular. To soften the hit, Mercedes plans to lean even harder on its top end models and keep costs tight. In other words, it hopes that bigger margins on luxury vehicles will offset the smaller number of cars it expects to sell. 'Mercedes-Benz Group now sees Group revenue significantly below the prior-year level based on lower sales expected at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans,' the company said in a statement. Related Hammered by US tariffs, Volkswagen's profit drops sharply European automotive giant Stellantis faces €1.5 billion hit from US tariffs this year Trump tariffs For most of this year, European-made cars were imported into the US at a tariff of 27.5%, but after the most recent deal struck between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump, they will be imported at 15% starting on Friday. Europe's automobile sector directly and indirectly employs a whopping 13.8 million people, providing one in every 16 EU jobs. This makes it the backbone for a large share of household incomes across the bloc, especially in the regions where auto manufacturing hubs are located. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said the firm would have to navigate the altered political environment in the near future by selling more luxury cars and investing in innovation. 'We're adapting to new geopolitical realities by using our global production footprint intelligently and by executing our Next Level Performance programme, which goes beyond efficiency measures, to increase the resilience of our company,' CEO Ola Källenius said in a statement. Specifically, the mid-year report highlighted the pivot to research and development (R&D) to create new products and technologies. Carmakers pour about €73 billion annually into R&D, more than any other private sector in Europe. Their breakthroughs then often spill into other sectors, such as batteries, robotics and AI. 'The best response is to stay on course to deliver desirable and intelligent products, while keeping a tight grip on costs,' Källenius continued. Mercedes cars have a strong brand identity and loyalty among consumers who were drawn to their robust engines and high-end, sleek designs, citing reliability and durability. The company is a top-five player in the global carmaker ranking in terms of revenue, along with two other German companies, Volkswagen and BMW. In the luxury market, it ranks second globally behind BMW. Motor-vehicle ownership taxes alone inject roughly €428bn a year into EU treasuries, a revenue stream that is critical for public services and larger than the entire annual EU budget. China Auto Glass Maker Fuyao Opens New U.S. Plant, Eyes Smart Vehicles

Fuyao's new $300 million plant in Ohio has started production of auto glass. Fuyao Glass Industry Group, one of the world's largest auto glass manufacturers, attracted wide attention in the U.S. in 2019 when it was the focus of an Oscar-winning documentary, 'American Factory,' backed by Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions. The film follows the China-headquartered company's purchase of a shuttered former GM plant in Moraine, Ohio, and the facility's return to life after its purchase by Fuyao. Fuyao has factories in four U.S. states – Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina. This year, Fuyao has started production at a newly finished plant built next door to its first one in Moraine, Ohio. The facility – a greenfield project – cost approximately $300 million and will eventually employ about 500 people. First announced in 2022, it's part of a total investment in the U.S. of more than $1.5 billion that has created about 4,000 direct jobs. A focus at the new site is glass for the emerging era of self-driving and increasingly energy efficient cars. 'We're seeing major shifts in the global auto glass industry,' said Fuyao Glass America Vice President Amy Lei in an interview at the new facility earlier this month. 'Glass is no longer just transparent—it's becoming safer, more comfortable, lighter and smarter.' The new plant is now operational, and aims to support emerging technologies for EVs, heads-up displays, advanced driver assistance systems, and other smart glass advances for next-generation vehicles. Investors seem to like what they've been seeing from Fuyao. Last year, overseas sales increased by 18% to 17.5 billion yuan; domestic revenue in China rose by 19% to 21.6 billion yuan. Overall business continued to improve in the first quarter of 2025: total sales climbed by 12% from a year earlier to 9.9 billion yuan, according to a filing. Business has been buoyed by China's world-leading auto market and Fuyao customers that include Honda, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford and Chrysler. The company's Hong Kong-traded shares have climbed a third in the past year and reached an all-time high in May. Fuyao, whose global rivals include Saint-Gobain, AGC and Nippon Sheet Glass, ranked No. 1,392 on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world's top publicly traded companies released in June, up from 1,532 a year earlier. Chairman Cho Tak Wong—also known as Cao Dewang—and Fuyao represent the clout of the private sector that grew out of China's economic reforms in the 1980s and helped to turn the nation of 1.4 billion people into the world's second-largest economy. Fuyao Glass Industry Chairman Cho Tak Wong met with U.S. employees following the end of the ... More pandemic. Cho, worth $4.4 billion today on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List, has made a big mark at home as a philanthropist by opening a university near Fuyao's headquarters in southern Fujian province. Looking back on Fuyao's U.S. history, the opening of the first Ohio factory 'marked the beginning of what I call American Factory 1.0: the transformation of a shuttered facility into a fully operational auto glass plant,' as part of a strategy that emphasizes local production for local clients, Lei said. 'American Factory 2.0, from around 2018 to 2022, was about stabilization and performance. We became profitable, built internal trust, and strengthened our customer relationships. We invested heavily in workforce training, process improvements and operational excellence,' she said. 'Today, we're in American Factory 3.0, focused on innovation and the future.' Lei, a graduate of Ohio State University, was the head of Asia business development at JobsOhio, the state's economic development organization before formally joining Fuyao. 'That gave me a front-row seat to Fuyao's growth in the U.S.—from just an idea to what it is today,' Lei said. 'So, for Fuyao, this (new) plant isn't just about adding capacity—it's a statement of purpose: to be future-ready, people-focused, and community-rooted.' Fuyao Glass America and The Heren Foundation U.S.A. over the years have donated to approximately 30 U.S. non-profits in fields such as education and health, including The Dayton Regional STEM School, the Children's Hunger Alliance, United Rehabilitation Services of Greater Dayton. It hasn't all been smooth going for the company of late, however. In July 2024, U.S. law enforcement conducted an on-site raid at Fuyao Glass America's plant in Moraine as well as other locations in the area as part of an investigation into a third-party labor service company. Fuyao Glass America believes it wasn't a target of the action. In April this year, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a related civil forfeiture complaint involving assets allegedly linked to an illegal staffing and money laundering scheme. Fuyao Glass America said it wasn't named as a defendant in the complaint and has said it is cooperating with authorities. Changes in U.S. tariffs have been altering the landscape for businesses globally. 'We're mindful of the impact of evolving U.S. trade policy and tariffs. At Fuyao, we stay focused on what we can control—quality, reliability, and how well we serve our customers,' Lei said. Fuyao Glass America Vice President Amy Lei spoke about the award-winning documentary "American ... More Factory" and Fuyao's expansion at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce in 2023. Looking down the road, Fuyao sees new opportunities in helping automakers adopt new technology. 'First, smart glass is in high demand. ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) and HUD (heads-up display) systems require glass to integrate with sensors, cameras, and displays—driving the need for higher optical precision and more advanced engineering' that improves driver visibility and safety, Lei said. In addition, 'Glass is getting larger in size and lighter in weight. Panoramic roofs and oversized windshields are especially popular in EVs and SUVs. These designs enhance the driving experience but add complexity in terms of weight, insulation, and strength,' she said. Finally, 'there's a growing emphasis on energy efficiency. Features like low-E coatings and lightweight glass help reduce cabin heat and improve EV range and passenger comfort.' That focus on newer technology is key to future growth, Lei believes. 'We're not just adapting to trends—we're helping to define what the future of automotive glass can be.'
