Sohar University plans to enhance collaboration with HEIs
The strategic goal of Sohar University is to expand its global presence and improve international cooperation in education, research and innovation. The collaboration with the Netherlands began with a joint project involving Delft University of Technology; and SOHAR Port and Freezone to assess the feasibility of using deep sea water for industrial cooling needs.
Previously, Sohar University partnered with Vibers, a Dutch company, to develop a new promotional product using bio-plastics to promote environmental sustainability. The product created through this collaboration was adopted by SOHAR Port and Freezone; and is now in use. This success led Sohar University to join a consortium involving HEIs and companies from Oman and the Netherlands, focusing on research projects like the Blue Harvest project, which aims to provide sustainable solutions to combat climate change.
With the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Muscat, Sohar University, along with other stakeholders from the Netherlands and Oman, launched the "Research and Education Network in Energy and Water" (RENEW) consortium. This partnership will prioritise projects in energy and water, aiming to develop new technologies and methodologies for real-world applications. The consortium also seeks to promote sustainable practices in water and energy management, equipping the next generation with the necessary skills and knowledge to address environmental challenges and drive innovation.
Dr Hamdan bin Sulaiman al Fazari, the Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, emphasised the university's commitment to expanding collaboration with the Netherlands to deliver innovative solutions that support Oman in achieving its Oman Vision 2040. He also mentioned that the university will spare no effort in enhancing its global presence through partnerships in education, research, innovation and community service.
Furthermore, Sohar University is planning a business trip to the Netherlands with industry participants to further engage with companies like Bemo Rail BV and other industrial partners in the Netherlands.

Forum discusses key issues related to labour market developments and future skills
Salalah: A forum titled 'Future of Work' kicked off on Monday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Compound for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. The two-day event, held as part of the Labour Forum organised by the Directorate General of Labour in Dhofar Governorate, saw a large turnout of experts and specialists from the Sultanate of Oman and GCC states. The forum seeks to promote cross-sectoral dialogue, exchange expertise and successful practices and devise evidence-based future visions to support employment programmes and human capital development in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. It also keeps pace with GCC states' approaches to achieve sustainable economic and social development. The forum's programme included dialogue sessions and workshops focusing on key issues related to labour market developments and future skills. The first session included three working papers on economic developments, future of work prospects and employment policies in a changing world. The second session dealt with economic developments and future skills in GCC states. It included research papers on the governance of the work leadership's system, forecasting skills needed to achieve development goals, policies of education, and the development of skills in a manner that supports the sustainability of labour markets. The forum constituted a strategic dialogue platform that contributes to discussing the future of employment and skills development, enhancing the readiness of labour markets in GCC states to address global challenges and supporting efforts to build sustainable and competitive economies.

SEFCO, Omani growers sign sesame farming pact
SALALAH: SEFCO, a food industry firm based in the Salalah Free Zone, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Omani Agricultural Association (Dhofar Branch) to promote sesame cultivation in the Najd area of Dhofar Governorate. The initiative is part of a wider collaboration involving the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, and the Salalah Free Zone. It aims to link local agricultural output with the food processing industry, aligning with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. As per the agreement, SEFCO will procure the full sesame yield from farmers during the first harvest season, with plans to scale up in future phases. The project presently involves around 35 farmers and spans 600 acres of farmland, with a projected yield of 300 tonnes in its first season. It is expected to reduce reliance on imported sesame, thereby supporting local industries such as tahini and halwa production. Sesame is highly compatible with the desert environment of Najd and is prized for its versatility across food, cosmetics and traditional medicine, as well as its rich nutritional value. Dr Ali Tabouk, CEO of Salalah Free Zone, remarked, 'Our objective is to stimulate economic growth by enabling meaningful collaborations between investors in the zone and the local community. This initiative underscores our focus on building industries rooted in local resources and fostering sustainable development across Dhofar and Oman.' The agreement stands as a model of effective public-private partnership, illustrating how government entities, free zones and the private sector can unite to support SMEs, enhance food self-sufficiency and drive long-term national growth.

Khareef tourism pushes hotel occupancy to new highs
SALALAH: Hotels and hospitality providers across Dhofar Governorate are reporting record-high occupancy rates during the ongoing Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, driven by favourable weather, enhanced infrastructure and rising regional interest. Industry sources confirmed that hotel bookings in Salalah and surrounding wilayats have surpassed 90 per cent since mid-July. Family resorts, boutique guesthouses and furnished apartments are operating at full capacity on weekends and public holidays. A surge in domestic travel, improved air connectivity and targeted marketing campaigns across the Gulf have all contributed to the uptick in tourism. The khareef season, which typically spans from late June to early September, continues to draw a steady stream of visitors from across Oman and neighbouring GCC countries. 'Compared to last year, we are seeing a marked increase in both length of stay and per-guest spending,' said an executive from a leading four-star hotel in Salalah. 'Families are arriving earlier and staying longer, with high demand for suites and sea-view rooms.' Demand has also spilled over into alternative accommodations such as serviced apartments, home rentals and eco-lodges, especially near Ittin, Al Mughsail and the Dhofar highlands. Mobile platforms offering short-term stays have reported record bookings and listings. Said al Maashani, who runs a family-operated mountain lodge, said, 'Visitors are looking for comfort and proximity to nature. We're fully booked until the end of August.' The hospitality boom has had a ripple effect on related sectors including car rentals, dining, tour guiding and outdoor leisure businesses. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism attributes the strong season to early planning, robust promotion and infrastructure enhancements. Salalah Airport has added domestic and regional flights, while road improvements have eased access to tourist hotspots. Officials also highlighted the alignment of khareef 2025 with Oman Vision 2040.
