Putra Heights inferno: Reconstruction of damaged homes to take two years
The Housing and Local Government Minister said so far, work on 219 affected homes had been carried out according to plan and within the set timeframe.
"Contractors are actively working on the repair and reconstruction of the destroyed homes. I hope that within less than two years, we can complete the construction of new houses for the affected victims.
"Homes that have been completely destroyed, we will build new ones, while those that can be repaired will be restored," he said before appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme, which discussed the topic "UN-Habitat: Malaysia Ready to Lead Global Sustainable Development" at Wisma Bernama on Tuesday (May 13).
Nga said the government, through the Housing and Local Government Ministry, had allocated RM46mil to repair homes and public infrastructure affected by the incident.
He said that through the allocation from the ministry and the Subang Jaya City Council, RM6mil had been set aside to restore and rebuild public infrastructure and facilities, including roads, drainage systems and public recreational parks damaged.
The gas pipeline fire on April 1 caused flames to rise more than 30m high, with temperatures reaching over 1,000°C and took almost eight hours to be completely extinguished.
The incident caused 81 homes to be completely destroyed, with structural damage exceeding 40%, 81 homes partially damaged, 57 homes affected but not burned and 218 homes left unaffected. – Bernama

JERUSALEM: Israel said Monday that more than 120 truckloads of food aid were distributed by the UN and aid agencies in the Gaza Strip on the first day of a promised limited break in fighting. On Sunday, Israel declared a "tactical pause" in military operations in part of Gaza and promised to open secure routes for aid, urging humanitarian groups to step up food distribution. "Over 120 trucks were collected and distributed yesterday by the UN and international organisations," said COGAT, an Israeli defence ministry body overseeing civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories. In recent weeks UN agencies have been warning of a life-threatening famine as aid supplies dry up, and international pressure has been building for a ceasefire to allow a massive relief operation. Israel's government, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, furiously denies that it is using hunger as a weapon of war, and instead accuses the aid agencies of failing to pick up and distribute aid delivered to Gaza's border crossing points. Nga Kor Ming chastises ‘Turun Anwar' rally-goers for littering; trolled to 'stop talking rubbish'
Editor's Note: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming had in the Dewan Rakyat today (July 28) stood by his statement that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left scattered following Saturday's (July 26) PAS-inspired 'Turun Anwar' rally. He went on to attribute the data to the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) which carried out the clean-up after the rally ended. THE fallout from the 'Turun Anwar' rally over the weekend has begun. Not with a dramatic stepping down of PMX but rather the more prosaic need to clean up after exercising one's democratic rights. This came about as Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming slammed the actions of rally participants who threw garbage everywhere, thus causing inconvenience to sanitation workers. Through a post on the X platform, the Teluk Intan MP stressed that due to the irresponsible actions of the opposition supporters, the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) had to work hard to clean up the mess left behind. 'The Madani government celebrates democracy and there is no obstacle to peaceful assemblies, but please maintain cleanliness. Don't embarrass the country.' It was claimed that 20 metric tonnes or 20,000kg of rubbish was left behind by the participants of the gathering. The opposition's response was sharp and swift, accusing Nga instead of twisting the facts and being quite poor at maths! According to PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari, if the claim was true, it would have put the attendance closer to 200,000 participants rather than 20,000. As expected, battle lines were drawn with commenter's party loyalties clearly on display. Nga's ropey calculations were called into question by various commenters with many asking how the DAP national deputy chairman derived such a figure. The cops after all had placed the attendance in the region of 18,000 protesters. Many netizens also highlighted the brazen hypocrisy, citing the damage caused at previous rallies that were pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) in nature. More than a few highlighted the damaged police vehicle at a previous BERSIH rally (in 2011). Electoral disgruntlement was obvious with plenty of commenters asking Nga if there were no other issues to highlight. The recent gas explosion at Putra Heights, Selangor was a glaring example of a pertinent issue that needed to be discussed but could have conveniently swept under the carpet. Comments on the PAS lawmaker's Facebook page was even more scathing with many calling for Nga and the Madani administration to step down. One commenter argued that PH coalition's attitudes has not changed whether they were in opposition or in Putrajaya. Of course, racist comments are never far off whenever a DAP politician speaks with one equating the 'fight' against the 'communists' as some sort of jihad (martyrdom). It accused these 'communists' as always looking for opportunities to 'betray the Malays and seize the country'. Few things this storm-in-a-teacup highlights. The stench of hypocrisy is always prevalent. As rightly pointed out, the damage and mess caused by earlier pro-PH rallies were just as bad, if not worse. Secondly, didn't Nga's PR team brief him on the maths? His claims would inadvertently place a lot more protestors at the scene, surely not something he was aiming for. Last not least, when will Malaysians learn to focus on the pertinent issue at hand? UN chief: Hunger must never be 'weapon of war'
ADDIS ABABA: United Nations chief Antonio Guterres urged the international community today to reject hunger as a weapon of war. UN agencies have been warning of life-threatening hunger in Gaza as aid supplies dried up, and international pressure has been building for a ceasefire to allow a massive relief operation. Israel's government, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, furiously denies that it is using hunger as a weapon of war, and instead accuses the aid agencies of failing to pick up and distribute aid delivered to Gaza's border crossing points. "Climate change is disrupting harvests, supply chains, and humanitarian aid. Conflict continues to spread hunger from Gaza to Sudan and beyond," Guterres told a UN conference in Ethiopia by video. "Hunger fuels instability and undermines peace. We must never accept hunger as a weapon of war," the UN chief added said. In the Gaza Strip, the war-shattered Palestinian territory is gripped by dire humanitarian conditions created by 21 months of war and made worse by Israel's total blockade of aid from March to May. Since the easing of the blockade, the levels of aid reaching Gaza have been far below what aid groups say is needed. On Sunday, as Israel began a "tactical pause" in the fighting to allow the UN and aid agencies to tackle a deepening hunger crisis, the World Health Organization warned that malnutrition was reaching "alarming levels." Sudan is "the largest humanitarian catastrophe facing our world and also the least remembered", Othman Belbeisi, the regional director of UN's IOM migration agency, told reporters last week. Since April 2023, Sudan has been torn apart by a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
