Dr Daniel Hunt, Michael Long and Christine Anu celebrated at 50th NAIDOC Week Awards

Blak leadership and strength were celebrated at this year's National NAIDOC Week Awards on Saturday in Noongar Whadjuk Boorloo (Perth), with more than a thousand people from across the country in attendance.
It was a tough competition with the judges sifting through 200 applications, with only ten people taking home an award, many from Western Australia.
Jaru and Indjibarndi man Dr Daniel Hunt was awarded the coveted NAIDOC Person of the Year award for his extensive work in Aboriginal health.
"Legacy is the thing I turn to most … because it is those who have come before us, those trailblazers, who really have paved the way," he said.
"We have to be absolutely proud of what has been accomplished … The term Blak excellence can't be expressed enough when I see what is happening in Australia."
Anmatjere and Marranunggu man Michael Long OAM received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership to address racism within the AFL and advocate for Indigenous rights.
Receiving a standing ovation, Mr Long said it was "an award I will treasure" as he thanked those who stood by his side over the past 35 years, with special mention to his family members in the crowd.
Another highlight of the night was Aunty Rosalie Kickett awarded for her work in the mental health and domestic violence sector, which she dedicated to her parents and her late daughter who died from gender-based violence.
"I never walked this path for recognition, I did it for my community … for my family, for those that don't have a voice," she said as she held back her tears.
"In 2023, I lost my beautiful girl Tiffany to domestic violence, it's what led me to Acacia Prison.
Aunty Rosalie also thanked the men in Western Australia's Acacia Prison who nominated her for the award.
"When you can't see the light, we'll carry it for you until you can carry the flame yourself. Thank you for walking this journey with me," she said.
Narelda Jacobs also paid tribute to Mechelle Turvey, mother of Cassius Turvey, for her long fight for justice while experiencing "unspeakable grief".
"Aunty Mechelle, you are a wonderful Australian and treasured Noongar woman," she said.
This year marked 50 years since NAIDOC Week began.
Over the years, it has evolved from a week of protest to one of celebration, which shines a light on First Nations trailblazers and the life-changing impact they are making in their communities across Australia.
Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy reflected on its legacy and said it was a reminder that "our people, our voices, our culture is worth celebrating."
"It's a powerful reminder of who we are, where we come from and the strength that keeps us going," she told the crowd.
This year's theme "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy" paid homage to the tireless work of Indigenous ancestors and the future leaders continuing the work to create change.
"We celebrate the strength, spirit and stories that got us here. Our old people knew how important it was to take up space," NAIDOC Committee Co-chair Professor Lynette Riley said.
"Fifty years we are still here stronger, louder, united and unapologetically proud."
Before the event concluded, the hosts announced that the 2026 NAIDOC Week Awards will be hosted in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) next year.
In case you missed it, here is a breakdown of the finalists and winners of this year's NAIDOC Week awards.

Kingscliff retirement village explosion leaves elderly couple hospitalised

An elderly couple are receiving treatment in hospital after being injured during an explosion at their home that authorities suspect may have been caused by a gas leak. Emergency services were called to a demountable home on Mary Street at Noble Lakeside Park — an over-50s retirement village in Kingscliff — at about 7:20am on Monday. Four fire trucks and 14 firefighters responded to reports of an explosion and fire. On arrival, the demountable was well alight. An 83-year-old woman with minor burns to her face and body is in a stable condition at Tweed Valley Hospital. An 85-year-old man was taken by the rescue helicopter to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with severe burns and is reportedly in a critical condition. NSW Ambulance Inspector Paul Millard described the injuries as "significant". "[The home] was completely destroyed," Mr Millard said. Fire and Rescue NSW is working with NSW Police to determine whether the blast was caused by a leaking LPG system. Firefighters stopped the resulting fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Trainer Stephen Jones has 3-½ year ban restarted after visit to the Magic Millions Sales

The three-and-a-half-year ban being served by prominent country trainer Stephen Jones has been restarted after the Scone-based conditioner was found guilty of breaching the conditions of his disqualification. In February this year, the NSW Racing Appeal Tribunal upheld the three-and-a-half-year disqualification Jones was handed by Racing NSW stewards for a string of charges relating to the race-day treatment of horses. Jones, who has prepared more than 550 winners during his training career, was sidelined until October, 2027 as a result of the unsuccessful appeal bid, in which he pleaded not guilty to all but four of the 18 charges laid against him. But in March, while under disqualifaction, Jones made an application to Racing NSW seeking approval to attend the Magic Millions Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast in June. Following 'careful consideration' of the approach, Racing NSW ultimately refused the application. • Country trainer slapped with hefty treatment ban In the aftermath of the Magic Millions Sales, Racing NSW received information which led to the commencement of an investigation as to whether Jones did in fact attend the sales grounds. The evidence tendered alleged Jones 'entered the sales at 9.03am on June 2, 2025 before exiting a few hours later at 11.11am'. Stewards invited Jones to make submissions with respect to the allegations before consideration of all the available evidence and submissions led to Stewards being satisfied that Jones had in fact breached Australian Rule of Racing AR263(1)(m). The rule states that the disqualification period imposed on a person will automatically restart if the person breaches the rules. As a result, Jones' three-and-a-half-year ban will now expire in December, 2028.

Desperate search for missing backpacker Caroline Wilga, 26, last seen in WA

A desperate search is under way to locate a missing 26-year old German backpacker who was last seen in Western Australia's Wheatbelt. Caroline Wilga, 26, was reported missing to police and has not been heard from since June 29. She was last seen at a convenience store on Stirling Tce near the intersection of Goomalling-Toodyay Rd in Toodyay on June 28. Police believe Ms Wilga was travelling through the Wheatbelt region of Wialki near Beacon - about 320km northeast of Perth - when she last contacted friends. A police spokesman said Ms Wilga has been backpacking in Australia for the past two years, living mostly in hostels, and works at mine sites. She has a slim build, frizzy-curly long dark blonde hair, brown eyes and several tattoos, including a symbol on her left arm. Police believe she is travelling in a black and silver 1995 Mitsubishi Station sedan with WA number plates 1HDS330. 'Anyone with any information in relation to the whereabouts of Carolina Wilga is urged to contact police immediately,' a spokesman said.
