Notre Dame could land Kaydon Finley, Devin Fitzgerald and Brayden Robinson this weekend

USA Today2 days ago
This weekend could be very prosperous for Notre Dame football, as three of its top targets have set their commitment dates on back-to-back-to-back days.
Let's take a look at who is making their college choice along with the Irish's chances, starting with the first announcement on July 4th.
Texas wide receiver Kaydon Finley will make his pick between Texas, Texas A&M and the Irish. He's one of the top prospects in the country, ranking as the No. 110 player according to the 247Sports Composite. This recruitment looks very promising for Notre Dame, as there are three crystal ball picks on 247Sports favoring the Irish.
The next scheduled player to commit is another receiver in Arizona's Devin Fitzgerald on July 5th. The son of NFL legend Larry will pick one of four teams: Stanford, Clemson, UCLA or Notre Dame. At 6-foot, 2-inches and 205-pounds, the younger Fitzgerald is ranked as the No. 488 prospect by 247Sports. They also like the Irish's chances, but not quite as confident with just one crystal ball pick for the Blue and Gold.
Lastly, Brayden Robinson, another receiver, will make his pick on July 6th. The Irish are battling Miami and Arizona for the nation's No. 340 prospect in the 247Sports rankings. Like Fitzgerald, there is just one crystal ball and while it does favor Notre Dame, it's not all that encouraging.
It's hard to imagine that the Irish land all three, and while that is a possibility, they already have two other receivers committed in the 2026 class. Finley and Fitzgerald are at the top of my 'want' list, but that's just personal preference. It very well could be a big Fourth of July weekend for Notre Dame.

Watch: Devin Fitzgerald, son of NFL legend, announces college commitment

On Saturday at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, Brophy College Prep (Arizona) wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald is set to announce his college commitment. The late-breakout 6-foot-2, 205-pound pass-catcher, who is the son of NFL legendary wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, is set to choose from among four finalists: Clemson, Notre Dame, Stanford and UCLA. Advertisement WATCH: Heading into decision day, Fitzgerald is believed to be a Notre Dame lean - and the middle piece in a trio of anticipated commitments. The first came Friday when Aledo (Texas) four-star wide receiver Kaydon Finley announced his commitment. On Sunday, Red Oak (Texas) four-star wide receiver Brayden Robinson will announce his decision. It could mean Marcus Freeman quickly addresses his program's need at receiver with a trio of pledges in a 48-hour period. But Fitzgerald will need to be the next domino to fall. Notre Dame is the favorite, but Clemson, Stanford and UCLA are working hard to the end to try to add him into the fold. Advertisement As a junior, the Arizona product hauled in 52 receptions for 720 yards and nine touchdowns. Here's what 247Sports had to say about him as a prospect: "Fitzgerald has made a big jump in his development over the last year and especially this off-season. He has clearly established himself as one of the top players in the region and one of the better receivers nationally as well." "Has a strong, athletic frame with big hands and has improved his twitch and athleticism. He's moving more fluidly, looks more explosive getting down the field and has more juice in his game from an athletic standpoint. He was always polished in terms of his route running and ball skills, which isn't surprising when you consider his father Larry Fitzgerald was one of the most technically sound receivers to ever play the game." Advertisement "To see the jump in athleticism has been encouraging and he's also filling out his frame, pushing 200 pounds now and looks stronger and is playing with a ton of confidence. He's winning jump ball battles, catching the ball through contact and his game is definitely trending in the right direction right now." "A legitimate high major, NFL prospect in his own right and has the tools to be an immediate impact player at the next level as well."

Jeff McNeil's home run and sparkling defensive play carry Mets past Yankees in Subway Series

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil, arms clasped behind his back, tossed his bat and shouted toward the New York Mets dugout, starting up the first base line as his go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning off Luke Weaver sailed into the second deck at Citi Field. Twenty-five minutes later, the second baseman sprinted a half-dozen steps to his left, sprawled onto the outfield grass and with an outstretched glove angled toward the right-field corner snagged DJ LeMahieu's one-hopper. McNeil popped to his feet and threw to first for the second out of the ninth. 'The homer was sick,' McNeil said after the Mets overcame a pair of two-run deficits to beat the New York Yankees 6-5 on Friday in the opener of this season's second Subway Series. 'I love hitting homers. I don't hit that many. But at the same time, because I hit the home run, I think that play was a little bit bigger.' In a thrilling back-and-forth struggle on a sunny Fourth of July that included seven home runs, the Yankees wasted 2-0 and 5-3 leads and the Mets squandered a 3-2 advantage. The Mets won their third straight game after losing 14 of 17, while the Yankees lost their fifth in a row. Both teams were in first place when their series in the Bronx began on May 16. The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25, and then both plunged like skydivers. The Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15. With 13 pitchers on the injured list, the Mets gave 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman his first major league start. Jasson Dominguez went deep leading off, ending a 32-game homerless streak, and Aaron Judge followed with his 32nd home run. Hagenman retired his next nine batters. 'All of New York here basically watching the game,' he marveled. Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff drive into a double starting the bottom half and Juan Soto followed with a two-run homer off Marcus Stroman. 'He's kind of getting the momentum right back,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said about Soto's shot. 'That was kind of like a setting-the-tone moment. OK, they punch, we're going to punch back. ... It's game on.' Soto went 1 for 10 with no extra-base hits in his Yankee Stadium return. He had three hits in this one, doubling in the third and scoring when Pete Alonso singled on a 108.3 mph scorching grounder off the glove of shortstop Anthony Volpe. Cody Bellinger's homer tied the score in the fourth and Domínguez hit a two-run homer for a 5-3 lead in the fifth against Austin Warren. Brett Baty's sixth-inning homer against Ian Hamilton cut the margin to one. Weaver relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Alonso. McNeil worked the count full and figured he'd get a pitch at the bottom of the strike zone. He hit a no-doubt drive on the fourth changeup of the at-bat, his ninth home run this season. Now 33 and a two-time All-Star, McNeil has been with the Mets organization since they drafted him a dozen years ago. 'He's a gamer, man, and he's always ready to go,' Mendoza said. 'He's a pretty important player for this roster.' Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring. 'I said I've been feeling good. That just might be a lie now. I don't know. It's hard to make sense of what's going on,' Weaver said. 'At this point I've got two options. I can sulk and feel bad for myself or I can foundationally grind and find a way to just be flat-out better.' Reed Garrett, who had a 15.00 ERA in his previous eight appearances, worked the eighth for a depleted Mets bullpen, getting three outs around a single. Garrett tried to avoid Mendoza when he got back to the dugout. 'I was trying to walk away so he couldn't take me out of the game,' Garrett said. With closer Edwin Diaz unavailable after pitching the previous two days, Mendoza let Garrett work the ninth. Trent Grisham, pinch hitting for the slumping Volpe, flied out. LeMahieu followed with his looping one-hopper toward the hole that seemed destined to be a hit. 'He comes out of nowhere and just dives for the ball and really, really got me shocked,' said Soto, who was charging in from right field. 'It's by you, you've got to just throw your glove at it and try to kind of scoop it," McNeil said. 'I knew it was a big play because I knew Judge was up fourth that inning and we don't want him coming to the plate.' Five pitches later, Domínguez hit a routine grounder to McNeil. Garrett screamed and pumped a fist. 'I think we've shown a lot over the last month of just who we are as a team,' he said. 'I think if you back us into a corner, we're going to fight our way out of it.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

‘Count Me In' – Conor McGregor Sets His Sights on a Historic Stage

'Count Me In' – Conor McGregor Sets His Sights on a Historic Stage originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As part of the planned America 250-year celebration, President Donald Trump made headlines with a bold—and wildly unexpected—proposal: a UFC fight event hosted directly at the White House. Equal parts spectacle and political curveball, the announcement immediately sent shockwaves through the MMA world. And now, it's got the attention of a megastar who knows a thing or two about making headlines himself. Advertisement One of MMA's most iconic and unpredictable figures, Conor McGregor, didn't hesitate to jump on the hype train. On the Fourth of July, McGregor lit up social media with a post that felt part patriotic salute, part fight campaign. 'Happy 4th of July, USA. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House. I would be honoured! Count me in!' Conor McGregorGetty Images McGregor even shared a screenshot that looked like a direct message to UFC President Dana White, to which White replied with characteristic enthusiasm: 'I LOVE IT!!!!' Whether staged or spontaneous, the back-and-forth felt like classic McGregor—loud, strategic, and buzzworthy. Advertisement Let's be honest: McGregor's career path lately has been anything but linear. One week it's UFC, the next it's boxing, then rumors swirl about bare-knuckle scraps. Add in his legal issues and it's been hard to separate fact from spectacle. But with Trump's announcement now dangling the idea of a historic fight backdrop, fans might finally see 'The Notorious' back in action. McGregor still has two fights left on his UFC deal, and a potential White House showdown might be the perfect storm of history, hype, and havoc to bring him roaring back. If this goes down, it won't just be a return—it'll be a moment etched into combat sports lore.
