The court set mention for Aug 27 and granted RM3,000 bail with conditions, including police reporting and no contact with the victim. Skudai kopitiam owner claims trial to charge of offering RM2,000 bribe

JOHOR BARU: A kopitiam owner has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here for allegedly offering a RM2,000 bribe to a local council enforcement officer last year to avoid action being taken against his restaurant. Tan Kai Dee, 23, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Sessions Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail here on Monday (July 29). According to the charge sheet, Tan was accused of giving RM2,000 in cash to an assistant enforcement officer with the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), who is considered a public servant under the law. The alleged bribe was an inducement for the officer not to take enforcement action against Tan's kopitiam, which was found to have committed an offence under Section 47(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133). The provision carries a maximum fine of RM500, and RM1,000 for repeat offences. The offence allegedly took place at the restaurant in Taman Mutiara Mas here in Skudai at around 6.20pm on Nov 4, 2024. Tan was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and faces sentencing under Section 24(1) of the same Act. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, or whichever is higher. MACC prosecuting officer Ameera D'aneez Mohd Shukari requested bail be set at RM10,000 with additional conditions to prevent the accused from absconding. Lawyer K. Barathi, who represented the accused, however, appealed for a lower bail, stating that Tan supports his wife and both parents. Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin then set bail at RM10,000 with one local surety and also ordered Tan to report to the Mutiara Rini police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court. He then fixed Sept 17 for the next mention of the case for handing over of documents.

Ex-clerk claims trial to charge of CBT involving RM199,491

SEREMBAN: A 36-year-old woman claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of committing criminal breach of trust involving RM199,491 belonging to a cooperative where she was previously employed as a clerk. Noorazwin Zullkifli pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam on Tuesday (July 29). The mother of three young children was charged with committing the offence between Feb 2, 2023 and March 22, 2024 at the Kg LBJ Johnson Cooperative office in Bandar Enstek in Nilai. She had allegedly transferred the cash into her account online using a point of sale terminal belonging to the cooperative. The accused was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A. Aziz then told the court her team was offering the accused bail of RM30,000 with one surety pending remention. She also asked that the accused be ordered to surrender her passport if she had one to the court. Noorazwin's lawyer Ahmad Muzhaffar Abdul Razak pleaded for a lower bail as the accused had to provide for her three young children and only earned RM1,800 a month working at a convenience store. He said her husband worked in Kuala Lumpur and only returned home occasionally. Judge Mohamad Kamil then set bail at RM12,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender her passport to the court, to report at the nearest police station once a month till her case is disposed off and to stay away from witnesses. He fixed Sept 9 for mention.

Man arrested for stealing turtle eggs at Cherating beach

A man has been arrested while two of his accomplices are being hunted by police after being suspected of involvement in stealing turtle eggs at the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Cherating yesterday. Acting Kuantan district police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the 51-year-old suspect was arrested at a house in Cherating around 1pm yesterday, and preliminary urine screening found the man tested positive for drugs. He said police received a report about the incident from the Pahang Fisheries Department around 10am, Sunday (July 27), following a viral video on social media showing three men carrying a turtle at the popular tourist beach. He said investigations found the incident occurred at 7am, the same day, and the three suspects are locals believed to be involved in turtle egg theft activities. 'The viral footage was recorded by a local tourist who came across the three suspects lifting a turtle at the beach. 'The suspects brought the reptile to a hole that had been pre-dug at the beach to speed up the process of the turtle laying eggs. The suspects are believed to have acted in this manner to take the turtle eggs for sale or illegal use,' he said in a statement. Mohd Adli said the identities of the two other suspects being hunted have been identified. 'The arrested suspect will be handed over to the Fisheries Department for further action. 'The case is being investigated under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, where no one is allowed to fish, disturb, harass, catch or take turtles. If convicted, they can be fined up to RM5,000,' he added. The police action comes after a group of men were recorded lifting a turtle believed to be coming ashore to lay eggs at a beach that went viral on social media, sparking public outrage. Through a two-minute video uploaded on platform X around 11.57pm on Sunday, three men were seen in the sandy area lifting the reptile despite being warned by several other visitors.
