Community artwork on display
A community-driven art exhibition is being set up this weekend to help show off the hidden talents of Wānaka's creatives.
Independent Wānaka artist Chrissy Wicks, took it upon herself to gather local artistic talent of all ages and showcase their work at the annual Community Hub exhibition.
It all started with her work alongside Wānaka Primary School students, helping them create a Festival of Colour installation at the Dinosaur Park.
With a passion for fostering creativity, Ms Wicks did not just want to create art but encourage both children and adults to get their work out there, no matter what it was.
"I really enjoy doing big art, but I also really enjoy teaching other kids or encouraging kids and adults to get involved in art," she said.
As part of her work with the primary school she helped the senior students paint different seasons on recycled timber and pine cones to decorate the Dinosaur Park for the Festival of Colour.
She was now taking the installation and exhibiting it at the Community Hub this month.
"It's just another opportunity to really promote and encourage kids to do art and for them to see it in a gallery space."
In addition to her work with the primary school earlier this year, Ms Wicks was also involved with Art in Nature, a community art workshop held at Wānaka Station Park over five weeks earlier this year.
The idea behind the workshop was to encourage mental wellbeing by talking a walk through the park and gathering material such as pinecones for an artistic creation.
"I like to encourage people to go into nature to do art," Ms Wicks said.
Students from this workshop would also be exhibiting their work this month to give them a sense of accomplishment over their creations.
These artworks will be exhibited for all of August as well as other community art groups who will continue their displays through till October.
Community Hub co-ordinator Jan Ballam said they would also be hosting groups such as Print Makers Wānaka, Mint Art, and Wai Wānaka with Photography.
"These groups will exhibit freely as they are some of the hardworking non-profit groups in Wānaka," she said.
The exhibition will be on display Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm, starting after this weekend.

Yoga event aims to contribute to wellness of community
After teaching yoga all over the world, one Wanaka woman has been using her love for wellness to raise money for local charities while celebrating International Yoga Day. Originally from Brazil, local yoga instructor Keity Garcia moved to town in 2019 after spending some time travelling around Asia and teaching yoga in India. When she made the move to Wānaka, she checked if there were any events celebrating the International Day of Yoga only to find the day was not acknowledged the way she hoped it would be. The day is proclaimed by the United Nations and celebrated worldwide on June 21 every year. Ms Garcia took it upon herself to organise an annual event that would bring together yoga teachers, offering locals a full day of classes while also raising money for local charities. The first celebration took place right after one of the Covid lockdowns and was successful in its ability to bring people together after a hard time. "I also had this motivation because everybody was struggling with the lockdown. So I said, this is a great opportunity for people to come together," she said. This year the event will celebrate its sixth edition in Wānaka, with donations going towards St John and Community Link's Cold Kids Campaign. Ms Garcia added that the classes for this year will be held at the Wānaka Community Hub and will focus on the international theme, Yoga for One Earth, One Health. "It's very connected with how we deal not only with ourselves but how we are connected with the earth because the base of yoga is basically we are part of the universe." The classes are on for the whole day and include a range of practices such as laughter yoga, sound journey and meditation. The event is also welcoming Kirtan Journey Queenstown, a group that teaches the practice of Kirtan, where participants are taught how to sing mantras with music in the background. The event is donation-based, with a suggested donation of $25 for the day but participants are welcome to donate as much or as little as they would like. Over the years the event has grown, attracting more people and raising more money. Last year alone, $1600 was raised, with half being given to Community Link and the other half donated to Community Hub. Ms Garcia said their record number of attendees was during the event's fourth year, when 135 people took part in the sessions. As well as attracting participants, the event has also brought a range of teachers, some of who are visitors in town for the ski season and wanting to be part of something special.

Show aims to raise funds for musical playground
For its 31st year, Wānaka's Stars in Your Eyes show is fundraising to help build the town's first musical playground. The musical show, organised by Wānaka Musicians Incorporated, began three decades ago and took inspiration from the British television series, Stars in Their Eyes. Wānaka's version of the show is not a contest but has consisted of locals dressing up to imitate famous people and later reveal their real identity to the audience. Audition registrations recently opened in preparation for the musical show to be held towards the end of September. The show has been a community favourite and has helped fund youth music programmes across the region, such as the Jamie Robertson scholarship at Mount Aspiring College. This year organisers have decided to aim for something different by planning to create a designated outdoor space into town for people of all ages to enjoy musical instruments. Chairwoman Janet Dolan said they had always given money to local music education but this year they wanted to do something the whole community could enjoy. "We're talking about a full musical playground that adults, children, families, anybody can play," she said. "There'll be percussion instruments, there'll be bells, there'll be keyboard, and it's all outside." The group already had $30,000 put aside for the playground and was working with the council to get an estimate of costs and find the right location. Currently the show is gathering interest from the community and will be holding its auditions on the weekend of June 14. Ms Dolan said as the town's population grew, a more diverse range of people had been auditioning, something she felt gave the show strength. "We're aware that the audience represents the whole of Wānaka so we don't just want the pop music sort of thing, we want something that appeals to the whole audience," she said. The show has been open to a range of abilities and welcomed experienced and first-time performers. The show's team has also experienced a change with local musician and Festival of Colour performer Anna Shaw taking over as the director. The opening night for the musical show is set to be September 24 and will run until September 27 at the Lake Wānaka Centre.
