Bahrain's Youth Minister Highlights Kingdom's Empowerment Efforts at UN ECOSOC Youth Forum
On the sidelines of the forum, Minister Tawfiqi took part in a ministerial meeting organized by the UN Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, focused on enhancing youth participation in policymaking and decision-making processes.
In her address, Minister Tawfiqi emphasized that empowering youth and integrating them into decision-making is a cornerstone for building more inclusive and sustainable societies. She noted that involving young people in shaping policies that directly affect their lives reflects trust in their capabilities and creative potential.
The Minister also participated in a panel discussion titled 'Effective Youth Engagement in the Workforce,' where she showcased Bahrain's pioneering experience in youth sector development. She explained that the Ministry of Youth Affairs has transitioned from merely implementing programs to acting as a facilitator and enabler, which has led to the establishment of 23 youth-led associations specializing in areas such as talent management, leadership, and innovation.
She pointed out that many of these initiatives are run by young volunteers, allowing them to gain valuable experience and skills, eventually preparing them to serve as mentors for future generations.
Minister Tawfiqi reiterated Bahrain's commitment to enabling youth to contribute meaningfully to addressing national challenges and strengthening their roles within institutions, thus building a resilient and sustainable youth ecosystem.
During her visit, the Minister also attended the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015), which acknowledges the role of youth in promoting peace and security. Additionally, she participated in a special event hosted by the Russian Federation Mission, which focused on Russian policies supporting and empowering youth.
On the sidelines of the forum, Minister Tawfiqi held several high-level meetings with senior UN officials, including Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, and Mr. Felipe Paullier, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs.
These engagements reflect Bahrain's active international role in promoting youth development and its commitment to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Russia Says Minister Fired by Putin Killed Himself
Russia's former transport minister Roman Starovoyt killed himself Monday hours after being officially dismissed by President Vladimir Putin, the country's Investigative Committee said Monday. Authorities said Starovoyt's body was found in a Moscow suburb after the firing was announced with "suicide" being considered as the most likely cause of death. Starovoyt, who was 53, served as Russia's transport minister since May 2024 last year. He was previously the governor of the Kursk region, where Russia had battled a Ukrainian incursion. "Today, the body of former Transport Minister Roman Starovoyt was found in his private car with a gunshot wound in the Odintsovo district," the Investigative Committee said in a statement. "The main version (considered) is suicide," it added. Russian state media and news agencies said Starovoyt shot himself. It was not clear exactly when Starovoyt died. Hours earlier, the Kremlin published a decree signed by Putin to relieve Starovoyt of his duties. It only said: "Roman Starovoyt was relieved of the post of Minister of Transport." Starovoyt's firing came after another weekend of travel chaos at Russian airports following Ukrainian drone attacks. Russian state media also speculated the firing was linked to corruption in the Kursk region and a possible criminal case on the embezzlement of funds meant for fortifications in the border region. Commenting on the firing, before Starovoyt's death was announced, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "not linked to a loss of trust". Shortly after the Kremlin announced the dismissal, Putin met with one of Starovoyt's deputies, Andrei Nikitin, to appoint him as acting transport minister.

Afghans return from Iran surge ahead of deadline
Tens of thousands of Afghans streamed over the border from Iran in the days before a return deadline set for yesterday, the United Nations said, sparking an 'emergency' situation at border points. In late May, Iran said undocumented Afghans must leave the country by July 6, potentially impacting four million people, out of the six million Afghans Tehran says live in the country. Numbers of people crossing the border have surged since mid-June, with a peak of more than 43,000 people crossing at Islam Qala in western Herat province on July 1, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said on Friday. The UN migration agency IOM said more than 250,000 Afghans returned from Iran in June. UNICEF country representative Tajudeen Oyewale said this was an 'emergency' situation in a country already facing a 'chronic returnee crisis', with 1.4 million Afghans returning from traditional hosts Iran and Pakistan this year. 'What is concerning is that 25 percent of all these returnees are children... because the demographics have shifted' from individual men to whole families, crossing the border with scant belongings and money, he told AFP on Thursday. He noted Islam Qala could accommodate the vast numbers but was inadequately equipped in terms of services, saying, 'When you start hitting more than 20,000 people (a day) that is completely beyond the planning scenario that we have'. The agency has engaged emergency processes to ramp up water and sanitation systems built for 7-10,000 people a day, along with vaccinations, nutrition and child-friendly spaces. Many people crossing reported pressure from authorities or even arrest and deportation.

Russia claims new gains in central Ukraine; Ukrainian army reports drone attacks on recruitment centers
In a new development, Russia announced on Monday that its forces have taken control of a village called Dachne in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region. This is the first time Russia has claimed to capture territory in this central part of Ukraine since the war began more than three years ago. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, their troops have now established a presence in the region, which marks a strategic push beyond the usual frontlines. Meanwhile, Ukraine's military reported that Russian attacks targeted two military recruitment centers on the same day. One of the strikes hit a center in Kharkiv, injuring three people. Another drone attack on a center in Zaporizhzhia left one person wounded. The Ukrainian army shared these updates on social media, highlighting the continued threat to military infrastructure and personnel as the conflict intensifies.
