'Forever young': Lasting tribute to murdered Lanarkshire woman unveiled in hometown

A wooden memorial bench designed by local craftspeople in Strathaven pays tribute to popular and beautiful, Phoenix-Spencer Horn.
A lasting tribute to a much-loved young Lanarkshire woman who was brutally murdered has been unveiled in her hometown.

A beautifully handcrafted memorial bench has been dedicated to 21-year-old Phoenix Spencer-Horn in the grounds of the Strathaven Hotel where she worked.

The wooden bench, designed by local craftspeople in the market town, pays tribute to the popular and beautiful young woman with a poignant inscription which reads: "Phe, the girl with the stunning smile. 21 'forever young'".

In a nod to her favourite song, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, the lyric 'thunder only happens when it's raining' is featured on the bench along with Phoenix's date of birth and the date she died.

The words, 'love you, bye' are also carved inside a red love heart.
The close-knit community has been rocked by the tragic events that happened on November 18, 2024 when Phoenix was stabbed, strangled, decapitated and dismembered in the East Kilbride flat she shared with killer boyfriend Ewan Methven.
She had suffered a total of 20 stab wounds - the fatal one to the chest.

Described in court as "the personification of evil", 27-year-old postman Methven is now carrying out a life sentence after admitting to the gruesome murder when he appeared in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow last month.
Judge Lord Matthews ordered Methven to spend at least 23 years behind bars before he can be considered for parole.

Commenting on the lasting memorial one local said: "It's such a lovely memorial to such a special person.
"What happened to Phoenix was absolutely horrific and left many people shocked but the bench commemorates her life which was so cruelly cut short.

"She loved working in the hotel and was very popular with the customers so it's appropriate the bench will be sitting in the gardens for many years to come.
"Phoenix will never be forgotten by the people of Strathaven."
A group of her friends and colleagues named 'Phe's Angel Fighters' are taking on the Kiltwalk to raise money for Glasgow Women's Aid in her memory.

The 20-mile challenge will take place in September with more than £7000 already raised in Phoenix's name.

Man who 'kidnapped girlfriend, shackled her in shed and sexually abused her for two weeks' RELEASED from jail

A father-of-three accused of kidnapping his girlfriend, shackling her inside a shed and sexually abusing her for two weeks has been released from jail. Timothy Wood, 36, was arrested on July 2 after his girlfriend appeared at a neighbor's home covered in cuts and bruises, police said. She told investigators she had been held captive, beaten with an electrical chord and even stuffed into a crawl space for two days. The alleged victim said she managed to escape after two weeks by fleeing through an unlocked door. The Phoenix Police Department responded to a 911 call from the neighbor and arrested Wood for aggravated assault, sexual assault, felony kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment. But he has since been released from jail after the Maricopa County Attorney's Office requested that police obtain additional evidence. The woman spoke to local news on the condition of anonymity to share her terror and shock that her alleged abuser was allowed to roam free. 'They told me that there was enough evidence to put him away. They told me that they found everything. The forensic nurse even corroborated my injuries,' she told local CBS affiliate, AZ Family. When asked what her message would be to the prosecutor who released Wood from jail, she told the outlet, 'Enjoy my funeral'. The department has since resubmitted the charges to the attorney's office. Wood's alleged victim told AZ Family that she started to cry when she heard the news. 'I want to get him off the streets not only to get justice for me, but to keep him from hurting somebody else 'cause he will.' Harrowing abuse Wood allegedly held his victim captive for two weeks in a backyard shed after she was evicted from her home. He forced her to stay in the shed, even when she had to go to the bathroom, and would only allow her to the main home if they were together, court records obtained by AZ Central revealed. She was allegedly subject to physical abuse during her captivity and told police that it only subsided when she had sex with him. The alleged victim was confined to the shed that was locked with chains and bricks. In one harrowing instance, she was allegedly tied down by her ankles. She told investigators that Wood struck her with an electrical cord and threatened to cut off her foot with a saw. He even allegedly suffocated her by kneeling on her neck and told her he'd kill her if she reported him to authorities. In another instance, Wood allegedly forced her into a crawl space and buried her alive for two days. She eventually found an unlocked door and said she escaped to a neighbor, who helped her call authorities. The neighbor told local Fox affiliate, Fox 10 Phoenix, that she found the woman with two black eyes, a cut, a bruise on her leg, and a bruise on her head. 'She was frantic. She was scared to death that he was going to find her and kill her,' the neighbor recalled. Prosecutors said during a court hearing that the woman was forced to have sex under death threats and was tied down with chains. 'This victim, very well for 14 days, may have been worried that she may not survive this incident,' a county prosecutor said. Wood appeared in court last month and denied the current accusations levied against him. He told the judge that he was a father of three and the allegations were 'crazy'. Wood then accused his alleged victim of just getting, 'out of the loony bin'. 'I guess she has these episodes, and when she has an episode, I'm supposed to call her mom,' Wood said. 'I wasn't home at the time. When I got home, the police were there, and this all just kind of broke out.' Chilling criminal record Wood has demonstrated a cycle of abuse since 2007 when he was arrested for aggravated assault, according to online court records. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was arrested again in 2010 for attempting to commit domestic violence, for which he also pleaded guilty. Court records obtained by AZ Central indicated that police arrested Wood in 2007 after witnesses reported he was attempting to kidnap a woman who was screaming near his truck. He told police that the woman was his girlfriend and they were arguing about him leaving his car. Wood was placed on probation, which he violated three years later by choking a pregnant woman. He was sentenced to a year in prison with jail credit and completed his time the following year. Daily Mail reached out to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for additional court records and to the Phoenix Police Department for an update on the refiled charges against Wood.

Man charged with murder for brutal killing of Arizona dancer who planned to testify against him

A man has been charged with the brutal murder of an Arizona dancer who planned to testify against him. Mercedes Vega, 22, was found tortured in the back of a flaming Chevrolet Malibu off a highway around 50 miles west of Phoenix in April 2023. Her battered body was found the day she was set to testify against Cudjoe Young, the man accused of robbing her at gunpoint in 2020 and who has now been indicted on multiple charges related to Vega's death. Young faces charges of armed robbery, arson of an occupied structure, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, first-degree murder, kidnapping and theft of transportation. He was one of three people indicted on charges for the young dancer's brutal killing, including Sencere Hayes, 22, and a third redacted name who both face the same charges. Hayes and the unnamed person were also charged with hindering prosecution in the first degree, azcentral reported. Hayes was arrested on November 11, 2024, in Tennessee, after his fingerprint was found on a bloody grocery bag that had been left in the car with Vega, court documents obtained by azcentral said. He pleaded not guilty. Her battered body was found the day she was set to testify against Cudjoe Young (pictured), the man accused of robbing her at gunpoint in 2020 and who has now been indicted on multiple charges related to Vega's death Vega had been abducted from her apartment in Tempe on April 16, 2023, before she was brutally beaten and shot. She then had bleach poured down her throat and was left in the back of the Malibu that had been set alight, according to court documents. Now, investigators believe Vega's murder was part of a plot to prevent her from testifying against Young after she identified him as the gunman in the 2020 robbery. Young faced charges of following Vega home from the strip club she worked at, Le Girls. Several other dancers at the club had also been violently robbed around the same time. He had allegedly followed her home and sprinted toward her in her building's parking garage, demanding her belongings. 'He shoved her to the ground, told her he'd kill her and held the gun to her face,' Vega's mother Erika told NBC News. Young allegedly stole everything she had on her and fled from the scene, but he was later identified by Vega as the man who robbed her. Yet, Young posted his $50,000 bond and was set free. Now, investigators believe Vega's murder was part of a plot to prevent her from testifying against Young after she identified him as the gunman in the 2020 robbery Vega had moved to a Tempe apartment complex she believed would be safer after she was attacked. Following the incident, Vega was easily startled, her mother said. 'You couldn't walk up behind her without her jumping,' she added. The garage of this building was the last place she was seen alive before she was kidnapped and murdered. Vega vanished after telling friends she was headed to work. 'Uber is $60,' Vega wrote to her friend and co-worker Jelena Gamboa that night, as they were supposed to get together. 'I might just go to work then. I feel like it's a sign I shouldn't go.' Security cameras caught the moment her car, followed by the Chevrolet Malibu she was found in, both exited the garage. Her disappearance sparked a frantic manhunt, but she was found dead a day after she disappeared. Several other women who worked at Le Girls (pictured) had allegedly been stalked and robbed by a masked assailant A third man, Jared Gray, 25, was also arrested in June in connection to Vega's death after his fingerprint was found on the bottom of a plastic cup inside the Malibu where Vega's body was found, the outlet reported. Hayes and Gray were found to have flown to Phoenix on March 3, 2023, using tickets bought with a credit card whose owner had given Young permission to use, court filings stated. Young was also said to have paid two people to pick up the Malibu Vega's body was found in, according to the filing. A man whose phone pinged near the location of Vega's body also told investigators that Young had asked him to 'pick up a package' that same night. He said he had been given a vehicle and a location, and picked up two men to drive them back to the Phoenix area, the outlet reported. Hayes and Gray took a Greyhound bus back to Tennessee together on April 18, 2023. According to court records obtained by azcentral, Young and Hayes were being held at Maricopa County jail on a $2 million cash bond.

Canada coach banned in Olympic drone spying scandal set to resume her career in New Zealand

The Canada coach banned for her role in a drone spying scandal at the Paris Olympics has been hired as head coach of New Zealand's only professional women's team. It's a twist of fate for Priestman, who was suspended after a FIFA investigation found that she along with other coaching staff had used drones to spy on the New Zealand women's national team prior to Canada's first match at the Paris Olympics. She was fired as head coach of Canada's women's national team after as review by Canada Soccer. 'We're really pleased to be able to welcome Bev back to football,' Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison said. 'We all know she's had a period of time away from the game. But we understand the circumstances and we're really comfortable with this appointment. 'Bev can't wait to get started and we're really happy that she's going to be coaching the Phoenix.' Priestman guided Canada to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and has coached at four Women's World Cups, three Olympic Games and three FIFA youth World Cups. ___
