Bengal ISC Topper Drops Her Surname, Says 'Humanism' Only Religion

NDTV04-05-2025
Kolkata:
Srijani, the ISC topper from West Bengal who scored a perfect 400 out of 400, chose not to retain her surname when filing her examination form saying the decision stemmed from her belief in a society free from distinctions based on caste, creed, religion and gender.
The student of Future Foundation School in South Kolkata achieved a flawless 100 in all her subjects.
Despite the intense academic schedule, she found time to participate in the Women Reclaim the Night movement on August 14, following the rape-murder of an RG Kar medical student.
"As an individual, it was my decision - supported by my parents and sister. I believe in a society rising above divisions in caste, gender and religion, and beyond economic status. For me, a surname doesn't matter. I've always been known by my first name to my friends and loved ones. Why carry the baggage of a surname? I'm lucky to have the full support of my family," Srijani, the Ranikuthi resident in the city's Tollygunge area told PTI on Saturday.
Her father Debashis Goswami, an Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) professor and a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee, and mother Gopa Mukherjee, assistant professor of Gurudas College, were doubly proud for their daughter's feat as well as her principles and values.
"Both my daughters uphold the values and beliefs we inculcated in them since birth. I myself don't use my husband's surname. When we applied for our daughters' birth certificates, we didn't include any surname. We envision a society free from the prejudices of patriarchy and chauvinism," Ms Mukherjee said.
Ms Mukherjee, along with both her daughters, actively participated repeatedly during the R G Kar protests.
"For me, walking with thousands of fellow citizens seeking justice for the RG Kar victim never conflicted with academic preparations," she said.
Srijani, who aspires to pursue research in pure science like her father, said she never saw herself as the typical studious type.
"Beyond study hours, I'd always find time for adda with my parents, sister and close friends," she said.
When asked about her stance on religion, she added, "I wrote 'Humanism' in the slot for religion on the application form."
An official from Future Foundation, Regent Park, noted, "We have no issue if a candidate wishes to opt out of a surname. This is perfectly within the law."

6 months after life in RG Kar case, same court gives death for twin murders

Kolkata: Sealdah trial judge Anirban Das, who sent the RG Kar rape-murder accused to life behind bars, sentenced a 45-year-old to death on Wednesday for murdering and robbing an elderly Chitpore couple 10 years ago. The judge ordered that Sanjay Sen, alias Bappa, "be hanged from the neck until dead" for murdering the couple — both retired professors — who trusted him and even paid for his marriage. The judge, on Jan 20, sentenced RG Kar rape-and-murder accused Sanjoy Roy to life behind bars and spared him death, reasoning that "we must rise above the primitive instinct of 'an eye for an eye' or 'a tooth for a tooth' or 'a nail for a nail' or 'a life for a life'." Roy, 35, was also fined Rs 50,000, failing which he would have to serve another five months in prison. In handing out the life term, and not death, judge Das turned down the final CBI argument that the Aug 9 rape-murder of the 31-year-old PGT intern "was a rarest of rare crime which deserved capital punishment". The CBI has now challenged the life imprisonment order in the Calcutta High Court. In the 2015 case, however, the court was moved by the brutality of the double murders. The only daughter of the victims was settled in the US. Pran Gobinda Das (77) was a former professor at Burdwan University, and Renuka Das (75) taught history at Sarojini Naidu College in Dum Dum. They were found dead with multiple injuries, their home ransacked with cash and gold jewellery stolen. Sen murdered the couple with an iron rod, leaving behind a trail of blood. The post-mortem examination confirmed the deaths were homicidal, caused by ante-mortem injuries. This included the domestic help and Sen, her husband. Police also learnt that Sen, referred to as Bappa locally, was strongly admonished by the elderly couple for mistreating his wife. Sen was questioned, and his fidgety replies on alibis prompted cops to arrest him and question him in custody. Sen then broke down. Stolen gold ornaments and Rs 1,87,000 in cash were recovered from a hidden location in East Midnapore's Nandigram. The murder weapon, an iron pipe, and blood-stained clothes were retrieved from a pond near Sen's rental home in Chitpore's Sarba Khan Road. During the 10-year-old trial, 30 witnesses were examined. The case was initially registered based on a complaint by Partha Sen, the victims' nephew, and the police filed the charge sheet within the stipulated 90-day period, ensuring an in-custody trial. The state demanded maximum punishment, arguing that acts against senior citizens would not be tolerated. The defence counsel plans to appeal the verdict in a higher court. Death penalties by trial courts need to be ratified by the Calcutta High Court.

R G Kar to law college rape case, TMC crisis deepens as Opposition turns up heat

On June 25, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Digha to oversee preparations for the first Rath Yatra at the newly-built Jagannath temple in the seaside town. On the same day, a 24-year-old student was allegedly raped at a Kolkata law college – barely 10 months after the rape- murder of a junior doctor at the city's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked widespread protests and cornered the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led government. The TMC has now again found itself on the back foot after the Kolkata Police arrested four men in the law college rape case, including Manojit Misra, former leader of the TMC's student wing Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. After the rape-murder at R G Kar in August 2024, major protests had broken out across Bengal, which were led by members of the medical community. Under pressure and after a series of meetings with agitating doctors, Mamata was forced to accept their demands, including the transfer of Kolkata Police and state health department officials. Now, just ahead of the anniversary of the R G Kar outrage, the law college rape case has come as another jolt for the TMC. The main accused Misra, who was also a contractual staffer at the college, is a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad general secretary in South Kolkata. He has at least five previous cases pending against him, including for attempt to murder, sexual assault and extortion, prompting questions from the Opposition on why no police action was taken against him earlier. However, within hours of the college rape case coming to light, the TMC jumped to distance itself from the main accused as it faced attacks from the Opposition. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad state president Trinankur Bhattacharya said, 'We are not denying he was with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in the past. For the last few years, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad does not have any unit in the college (where the rape occurred). He was one of the organisational secretaries. There are 80-100 people in that post across all the districts. In 2022, a new committee was formed and he was not included in the committee.' TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, 'We are not defending the incident. But the BJP and the CPI(M) have no right to speak on this issue. Their hands are full with such crimes.' The TMC, though, continues to face backlash from the R G Kar case – in which the CBI arrested only the main accused Sanjay Ray and ruled out the involvement of others including senior hospital staff. The victim's father has been upset with the CBI enquiry for 'failing' to investigate the 'larger conspiracy' behind her rape-murder. The TMC leadership however does not believe that the party would face the same level of backlash in the college rape case as in the R G Kar matter. 'In the R G Kar rape-murder case, police had not acted properly and the administration had many faults. But in this case, the police swiftly acted and arrested all the culprits. So, it is not like the R G Kar case. In this case, the main accused tarnished our party's image though. We have to overcome that,' a senior TMC leader said. But against this backdrop, the TMC has drawn more flak following controversial remarks made by veteran party MLA Madan Mitra and its Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee. In his reaction to the college rape case, Kalyan said, 'If a friend rapes a friend, how can you ensure security? Will the police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect (the victim)?' Mitra further stoked controversy, saying that 'This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed, don't go, nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this incident wouldn't have happened.' While Mitra has been issued a show-cause notice by the TMC following his comments, the party has also 'dissociated' itself from both the leaders' remarks, which it said were made in their 'personal capacities'. Late on Monday, Mitra issued an apology in his reply to the show-cause notice. After TMC MP Mahua Moitra castigated both Kalyan and Mitra, accusing them of 'misogyny', Kalyan shot back, saying Moitra is 'anti-women' and had 'broken up a family of 40 years and married a 65-year-old guy'. TMC insiders said party supremo Mamata Banerjee is 'displeased' with such statements by senior leaders, particularly at a time of crisis. 'Madan and other leaders are being warned against causing the (college rape case) crisis to deepen by making such loose comments, that too a month before the first anniversary of the R G Kar rape-murder,' a senior minister said. But after taking on the TMC over the R G Kar row, the Opposition parties have also seized on the fresh case to gun for Mamata. The BJP has constituted a four-member fact-finding team on the law college rape case. The team, formed on the directive of BJP national president J P Nadda, arrived in Kolkata Monday. It includes Rajya Sabha MP and former Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb, former Union Minister Satyapal Singh, ex-Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra. 'The CM (Mamata) sends delegations to Hathras and Pahalgham, but when the Opposition comes to Bengal, they are stopped. Women are not safe here, not even law students,' Deb alleged.

Classes at South Calcutta Law College suspended, as protests erupt over rape of student

Classes have been suspended indefinitely at South Calcutta Law College (SCLC), where a student was gang-raped on June 25, as protests intensified outside the institution and in various parts of the city. So far, four people, including two students, an ex-student, and a security guard of the college, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape. On Sunday, SCLC authorities issued a notification that read, 'All BA LLB and LLM (General and Honours) classes at South Calcutta Law College will be suspended, and the college premises will remain closed for all students until further notice as decided by the Governing Body.' Students restive On Monday morning, around 80 current SCLC students from various batches gathered outside the college premises, as personnel from the police and the Rapid Action Force guarded the college gates. The entry of people has been barred since the incident came to light on Friday. Students of the law college expressed their discontent over poor security measures in the college and the uncertainty surrounding their education. 'We are feeling extremely insecure since the incident unfolded. We have been trying to call the vice principal since this morning. We finally managed to contact her in a roundabout way, but she is unwilling to come to the college. We want her to arrange a proper meeting and listen to our demands. Our education and safety have been compromised for a long time now,' Debduti Sengupta, a fifth-year SCLC student, said on behalf of the students present. The students also read out a list of demands on campus safety as well as education. 'Our demands include immediate suspension and action against the accused students and ex-students, formation of a sexual harassment cell, installation of CCTV cameras, appointment of female security personnel, no ID card no Entry, no entry after 4pm, and installation of sanitary napkin vending machines,' the students said. Fracas with BJP workers On Monday (June 30, 2025) afternoon clashes erupted between the protestors and BJP workers near the protest site outside the college. When the BJP's central fact-finding team reached the spot, they asked the police to let them into the college. The police refused to let them enter a crime scene. 'Reclaim the Night,' who organised rallies during the RG Kar rape and murder protests, were also present outside the college, protesting against the sexual assault on the law student. As both parties continued their slogan shouting, tensions soared. Reclaim the Night protestors raised 'Go Back' slogans against the BJP. 'When rapes and assaults happen in BJP-ruled states, where does the BJP fact finding committee go?' Jhelum Ray, one of the Reclaim the Night protestors, asked. This led to the BJP workers raising counter-slogans. 'Maoist people go back,' the BJP workers screamed. The BJP protestors then charged at the Reclaim the Night protestors and physically assaulted many of them. They used their helmets to hit both male and female protestors. They also used gendered slurs against the students who were part of the protests. 'Our posters were torn, they beat us, hit us with helmets, and kicked us,' a female protester who was running away from the BJP mob told The Hindu. The Trinamool Congress condemned the violence between BJP workers and protestors outside the law college premises on Monday. 'Today, when confronted about the Bilkis Bano and Kathua rape case, BJP karyakartas assaulted female students, molested them, and tore their clothes This is their definition of seeking justice. Beating women in uniform and stripping college girls of their dignity? It's a ritual of perversion that repeats wherever the BJP sets foot,' the Trinamool posted on X on Monday evening. Clashes with police BJP workers also held protests across the city and State and clashed with police personnel at Alipurduar in north Bengal, and in the heart of Kolkata at Esplanade's Dorina Crossing. The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the BJP's student wing, conducted a sit-in at B.B. Ganguly Street near Lalbazaar (Kolkata Police headquarters). Meanwhile, activists of the Association for the Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) sought to know why the Vice Principal Nayna Chatterji, had not been removed from her post since the incident came to light. 'It is impossible to keep the vice principal in her post, while an investigation into all the corruption and mishaps in the institution is ongoing,' their statement read. APDR also demanded the resignation of the vice-principal and the head of the governing body of the institution.
