Middle East2 days ago
CAIRO, July 2 (MENA) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Nabil Habashi held on Wednesday a meeting with Dutch Foreign Ministry Envoy for Migration Affairs Pieter Schuurmano to discuss ways of boosting cooperation on migration files within the framework of the Declaration of Intent signed between the two countries in 2021.
Habashi reviewed national efforts exerted by the Egyptian State to fight illegal migration based on Egypt's vision that covers both security and development aspects of migration and addresses its root causes by supporting local communities and offering safe alternatives.
The two sides discussed economic support provided by the Dutch side to support Egypt's efforts to fight illegal migration.
They also underscored the importance of developing programs that create job opportunities and foster social stability in communities most vulnerable to migration pressures.
The meeting also tackled boosting the Egyptian State's capacity to host refugees and migrants, in line with the principle of burden- and responsibility-sharing to ensure the resilience of host communities.
They reiterated their commitment to maintain efforts to address migration challenges through linking development and humanitarian dimensions in a way that contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports regional security and stability. (MENA)

OPEN// Egyptian, Norwegian FMs discuss regional developments

CAIRO, July 4 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Thursday discussed over the phone with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, the latest regional developments. During the phone call, Abdelatty commended the notable progress achieved in the political and economic ties between Egypt and Norway. Abdelatty stressed the importance of building on the outcomes of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's visit to Norway in December 2024, underlining the need to convene the next round of bilateral political consultations to implement the memorandum of understanding establishing a formal dialogue mechanism between the two countries. Regarding the situation in Gaza, the Egyptian foreign minister expressed appreciation for Norway's steadfast support of the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. He also briefed minister Eide on Egypt's continued coordination with Qatar and the United States to accelerate efforts toward reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty also underscored Egypt's ongoing preparations to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, to be convened following the establishment of a ceasefire and with wide-ranging international participation. He cautioned against the deteriorating situation in the West Bank due to ongoing Israeli policies, stressing the urgent need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in halting Israeli aggression in both Gaza and the West Bank. Both ministers reaffirmed the importance of preserving the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, underlining the need to resume diplomatic engagement aimed at promoting regional de-escalation and long-term stability. Netherlands Approves Stricter Asylum Law

Israa Farhan The Dutch House of Representatives has passed a controversial bill aimed at tightening asylum policies in the Netherlands, significantly restricting access to asylum and family reunification rights. The legislative package, approved on 3 July 2025, also criminalizes residing in the country without valid documents and offering assistance to undocumented individuals. To come into force, the proposed laws must now pass through the Dutch Senate, where they are expected to be debated in the autumn. The outcome remains uncertain, as opposition to the measures continues to mount. Legal experts, government advisors, asylum authorities, and refugee organisations have raised serious concerns over the legislation, warning that the new rules may be legally questionable and difficult to implement in practice. The bills were spearheaded by far-right populist Geert Wilders, whose anti-immigration Freedom Party (PVV) has pushed for what it calls the strictest asylum policy in Dutch history. Although the PVV was part of the governing coalition for the first time, the alliance collapsed in June 2025 due to deep disagreements over asylum policy. New parliamentary elections are scheduled for late October. Despite the government's fall, Wilders' PVV—currently the largest party in the House—voted in favor of the new asylum restrictions, alongside former coalition partners. Asylum seekers represent around 12% of annual immigration to the Netherlands. In 2024, approximately 32,000 individuals applied for asylum, with an additional 10,000 family members joining them. However, the first quarter of 2025 saw a steep 50% drop in new asylum applications, reflecting similar trends observed across Europe. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
