OPEN// Egypt, Netherlands discuss cooperation over migration file
CAIRO, July 2 (MENA) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Nabil Habashi held on Wednesday a meeting with Dutch Foreign Ministry Envoy for Migration Affairs Pieter Schuurmano to discuss ways of boosting cooperation on migration files within the framework of the Declaration of Intent signed between the two countries in 2021. Habashi reviewed national efforts exerted by the Egyptian State to fight illegal migration based on Egypt's vision that covers both security and development aspects of migration and addresses its root causes by supporting local communities and offering safe alternatives. The two sides discussed economic support provided by the Dutch side to support Egypt's efforts to fight illegal migration. They also underscored the importance of developing programs that create job opportunities and foster social stability in communities most vulnerable to migration pressures. The meeting also tackled boosting the Egyptian State's capacity to host refugees and migrants, in line with the principle of burden- and responsibility-sharing to ensure the resilience of host communities. They reiterated their commitment to maintain efforts to address migration challenges through linking development and humanitarian dimensions in a way that contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports regional security and stability. SA Navy concludes World Hydrography Day with a commitment to maritime cooperation
Navy chiefs unite for maritime security at World Hydrography Day celebrations Image: SANDF/South African Navy The South African Navy has wrapped up its celebrations for World Hydrography Day in East London, marking a week of public engagements, ship tours, panel discussions, and ceremonial events. Central to these festivities was showcasing hydrography's vital role in maritime safety, environmental protection, and sustainable economic growth, all under the theme 'Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action.' A key highlight was the Declaration of Intent, signed by 15 naval chiefs across Africa, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, and South Africa, outlining 11 shared maritime priorities to bolster security and cooperation. Throughout the week, naval vessels docked at the Port of East London, allowing residents to explore the Navy's technical capabilities firsthand. The programme also included a panel discussion and hydrography lecture at the Premier Hotel ICC, followed by a cocktail event and book launch aboard the SAS Amatola. During the cocktail reception, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, Chief of the South African Navy, emphasised hydrography's critical importance across various sectors. 'Hydrography plays a foundational role in our maritime security and economic activities. As a nation bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, South Africa depends heavily on its Navy to facilitate trade, defend our sovereignty, monitor maritime borders, and manage ocean resources. 'Hydrography enables safe navigation, supports search and rescue operations, and helps us better understand our vast oceanic territories.' Video Player is loading. Highlighting the broader strategic context, Vice Admiral Lobese noted that hydrography is an international obligation and a key driver of the blue economy, Africa's ocean-based economic development. The Navy also used the occasion to share outcomes from the 5th Sea Power for Africa Symposium, a high-level gathering of naval chiefs, academics, and maritime security experts from over 30 countries. As the continent's only Pan-African maritime forum, the symposium addressed pressing issues such as resilience in security strategies and responses to hotspots, including the Red Sea. A significant outcome of the symposium was the signing of the Declaration of Intent, a commitment by 15 African naval chiefs to prioritise 11 shared maritime objectives, fostering greater security and cooperation across the continent. Vice Admiral Lobese described this as a renewed commitment to collaborative progress, with plans to review developments at the next Sea Power symposium. The event also featured the launch of a new publication, which compiles 15 papers from the symposium. 'The publication was inspired by Nelson Mandela's words describing the sea as 'a vital national interest,' said Vice Admiral Lobese.

Moroccan, Mauritanian Fisheries Groups Pledge Joint Management of Small Pelagic Stocks
Fisheries professionals from Morocco and Mauritania on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to the sustainable and collaborative management of shared small pelagic fish stocks, during a two-day meeting in Dakhla aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The Moroccan Confederation of Industrial Pelagic Fishing Shipowners (COMAIP) and Mauritania's National Fishing Federation (FNP) stressed the strategic role of these fisheries in food security, regional development, and marine ecosystem balance. The event builds on a Declaration of Intent signed in Agadir last February and supports the broader Fisheries Cooperation Agreement between the two countries. Participants called for ecosystem-based management guided by scientific data and aligned with international standards, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. A joint committee was announced to coordinate scientific and technical exchange, propose harmonized policies, and enhance control and traceability systems. FNP President Yahefdhou Elbechir and COMAIP President Mohamed Lamine Hormatallah both emphasized the need for coordinated action to preserve marine resources for future generations. Experts at the meeting described the initiative as a model for regional cooperation in sustainable fisheries governance. (MAP: 05 June 2025)

COLDWATER — Unless someone mounts a successful write-in campaign, the mayor, three incumbent councilmen, and new councilman Jeff Budd will be sworn in to the Coldwater City Council on Nov. 10. City Clerk Shauna Chávez said only one candidate qualified for each seat in the Nov. 4 election. The city must hold an election even if only one person files for each seat. Four incumbents qualified for the ballot: Mayor Tom Kramer, who has served as mayor since 2011, will serve another two-year term.
