Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 75
Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 75 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are 75 days that separate us from now until the 2025-26 season opener for the New Orleans Saints. Advertisement The Saints are coming off a 5-12 season and are entering their 59th year of existence at home against the Arizona Cardinals. They'll also be doing it with a new head coach in Kellen Moore and some key new players. Budding star offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga wears number 75 for New Orleans. A first round choice in 2024, Fuaga enters his second year with the Saints and was one of the team's few bright spots last season. Fuaga is the 14th player to wear number 75 for the Saints in a regular season contest. Already one of the better young tackles in the NFL, it may not take long for Fuaga to claim a spot as the best player to wear 75 in New Orleans history. Mike Richey was the first offensive player to sport the number, playing five games at tackle in 1970. Mike Crangle was the first New Orleans draft picks (4th round) to wear 75, but did so for just 13 games in his only year with the team. Advertisement The first player not named Mike and to wear 75 for more than one year was Elex Price, a defensive tackle. Price played eight years as a Saint, the second longest stint for a number 75 in team history. He appeared in 103 games and recording 32 unofficial sacks with an interception and 6 fumble recoveries. Former Penn State All-American Bruce Clark was a high 1980 first round choice by the Green Bay Packers. He refused to play for the Packers, instead opting for two years in the CFL before returning to the NFL with the Saints in 1982. Over his time with the Saints, Clark had 39.5 sacks, intercepted one pass, and recovered 9 fumbles. Advertisement Doug Marrone is best-known as a coach, including a three-year stint as New Orleans offensive coordinator and returning later for two more years as offensive line coach. Marrone was also an NFL player, albeit briefly. He was a backup center with the Saints for one game during the 1989 season. Rodney Leisle was among those and makes his third appearance on our jersey countdown list. A fifth round pick by New Orleans in 2004, Leisle was with the Saints from 2004 to 2006, then returned to the team for the 2009 season. He wore numbers 75, 77, and 95 over those four years, sporting 75 only during his rookie season for two games. Advertisement Tyrunn Walker finally broke the one year 75 jersey string, wearing the number for 23 games over his two years with New Orleans. In those two seasons, Walker had 3.5 sacks and 4 tackles for loss as a rotational defensive lineman. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images Andrus Peat arrived to New Orleans as the 13th choice in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He is the highest drafted Saints pick to wear No. 75. His nine years, 111 games, and 102 starts also represent the longest-tenured New Orleans player to wear the jersey. Peat was often maligned during his first two years with the Saints, struggling at both right and left tackle. He was moved to guard in 2017, where he earned three Pro Bowls and was one of the league's best interior run blockers. Ironically, Peat moved back to tackle and made 12 quality starts there during his final year with the Saints in 2023. Rebilas-Imagn Images Taliese Fuaga was the 14th choice in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, also succeeding Peat in the number 75. An All-American right tackle in college at Oregon State, Fuaga was moved to left tackle as a rookie. He'd respond by showing All-Pro traits as both a pass protector and run blocker. Fuaga now looks like he'll be moving back to right tackle this season for the Saints. Just 23, he is one of the centerpieces as the Saints rebuild their core talent and a key building block for the team's future. Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 69
Saints Countdown To NFL Kickoff With The History Of Number 69 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We are now 69 days before the New Orleans Saints will host the Arizona Cardinals to kick off their 2025 regular season. Advertisement Kellen Moore is the new head coach on the sidelines for the Saints, who are entering their 59th year of existence and hoping to improve from last year's 5-12 record. The number 69 is not currently being worn by any New Orleans player. Here's a look at all who have worn the number 69 for New Orleans during a regular season contest. Credit: Pro Football Journal Andy Dorris was first to put on 69 for the Saints, wearing it for three seasons. Over that span he recorded 7 unofficial sacks in 41 games. Fifer was the first offensive player to wear the number, though only doing so for four contests. Nat Hudson was the first player drafted by the Saints to wear No. 69. He was a sixth round choice in 1981 only with the team for one year, playing sparingly in all 16 games as a backup. Pat Swoopes was an 11th round pick by New Orleans in 1986. He appeared in nine games for the team as a reserve that season, then played in the CFL for a year before returning to play in 15 games with the Saints during the 1989 campaign. Advertisement Credit: Reign Sports Management Les Miller was a rotational piece on the New Orleans defensive line late in the Dome Patrol era. He was with the Saints for four seasons, appearing in 53 games and recording 4.5 sacks. Tom Ackerman was added by the Saints with a fifth round choice in the 1996 NFL Draft. He was with New Orleans for six seasons, appearing in 78 games and making 18 starts. Ackerman is the highest drafted player by the Saints to wear 69 and also has logged the most games in the jersey. Anthony Hargrove joined New Orleans as a free agent in 2009. He was with the Saints just two seasons, playing in 30 regular season games and making six starts. Hargrove was a critical part of the defensive line rotation during the Saints Super Bowl XLIV championship season, recording 5 sacks and returning a fumble for a touchdown that year. Advertisement December 6, 2009; Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell (17) passes under pressure from New Orleans Saints defensive end Anthony Hargrove (69). Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Hargrove was also one of the players implicated in the infamous Saints 'bountygate' scandal that season. While little more than a witch hunt by commissioner Roger Goodell, it still resulted in an eight-game suspension of Hargrove, punishments for other players, and a ridiculous full year suspension for Saints head coach Sean Payton in 2012. Since Hargrove left New Orleans in 2010, five players have worn number 69 for the Saints through 2024. Only one of them, Eric Olsen, wore it for more than one year. Olsen wore it for 16 games with four starts in 2012, then for one contest in 2014. Matching Olsen's 17 game total was Kentavius Street, who appearing in every contest with New Orleans in 2022 but only wore 69 to start that season. Street had 3.5 sacks with 8 tackles for loss that year before departing in free agency that offseason. Aaron Rodgers Slammed By Ex-NFLPA Head For Being 'Dismissive' And 'Isolated'
Former NFL Players Association (NFLPA) executive director DeMaurice Smith has taken a swipe at Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers, describing him as "isolated and dismissive." Smith's comments come over a month after the controversial quarterback was accused by his ex-girlfriend, Danica Patrick, of being "emotionally abusive." Advertisement Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers finally signed with a new NFL team after being fired by the New York Jets following a two-year run. DeMaurice Smith Criticizes Aaron Rodgers As 'Isolated And Dismissive' Tammie Arroyo / / MEGA Former NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith has slammed Aaron Rodgers in his upcoming book Turf Wars," describing the quarterback as "isolated and dismissive." Smith ran the association from 2009 to 2023 but faced difficulties as Rodgers increasingly became a vocal critic of the 2020 collective bargaining agreement, voting against it with dissent over the 17-game season. "The god of Cheesehead Nation was isolated and dismissive," Smith wrote about Rodgers in his upcoming book. Advertisement "He sat in the back row of the meeting room, issuing loud sighs before standing for a dramatic exit," Smith continued, per Awful Announcing. "An incredible quarterback, to be sure, but an even more impressive antagonist." The Quarterback Was Called 'Emotionally Abusive' RCF / MEGA Describing how off-putting he found the star's character, DeMaurice Smith wrote in his book: "In August 2021, my phone chirped with a text from Aaron Rodgers. 'Can you call me?' it read. Could I not run into traffic instead?" Rodgers isn't the only one Smith criticized in his book, as he also described league commissioner Roger Goodell as a "cold, dark void." Advertisement He fired shots at polarizing Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, writing, "If Jerry Jones saw a dollar bill on the ground, I truly believe he'd stop and pick it up." Smith's critical remark about Rodgers in particular doesn't come as a surprise, as the four-time NFL MVP has long been known for his controversial and outspoken nature on various topics, both on and off the field. The 41-year-old quarterback's character was called into question recently when his ex-girlfriend, Danica Patrick, labeled him "emotionally abusive" and said the relationship with the footballer "wore [her] down to nothing." Aaron Rodgers Recently Signed With The Pittsburgh Steelers MEGA Smith's comments about Rodgers in his upcoming book come almost a month after the quarterback finally signed with a new NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, after a two-year run with the New York Jets. Advertisement NFL Network insider, Ian Rapoport, confirmed the signing back on June 5 in an X post, writing, "Aaron Rodgers plans to sign with the #Steelers, per The Insiders. It'll be a 1-year deal. At long last, the four-time MVP lands in his best spot." On June 7, Rodgers made it official, as he signed his contract, reportedly worth $13.65 million, with $10 million already guaranteed, at the Steelers' facility. Why The Quarterback Took Time Making His NFL Decision MEGA During a chat on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April, the quarterback, who recently got married to his wife, Brittani, shared why he was holding off on making a decision regarding his future in the NFL. Advertisement Rodgers noted at the time that he was focusing on helping people in his inner circle navigate some "difficult stuff." Knowing his remarks could be misconstrued, Roders clarified that he wasn't trying to "string anybody along" or "hold anybody hostage" by delaying his decision. "I've had constraints in my life right now that warrant my attention," the footballer doubled down, per the New York Post. Aaron Rodgers Gets Brutally Honest About Being Axed From The New York Jets MEGA During his chat with McAfee, Rodgers also broke his silence about his departure from the Jets, stating that he was surprised about how the matter was handled. Advertisement He recalled flying out to meet with the team's showrunners to discuss his future, but the meeting was brief and ended with him being let go. "The confusing thing to me is I went out there, I meet with the coach [Aaron Glenn] we start talking… he runs out of the room. I'm like 'that's strange,'" Rodgers recalled. "Then he comes back with the GM, and I'm like, 'all right.' So we sit down and I think we're going to have this long conversation, and 20 seconds in and he [Glenn] goes: 'You sure you wanna play football?' And I said 'yes' and he said 'we're going in another direction at quarterback.'" MEGA Reflecting further on the incident, Rodgers said he was "shocked" by how things unfolded, as he had made an effort to fly out for the meeting. Advertisement "I was shocked because.. I flew halfway across the country, and you could have told me this on the phone," he noted. "They said, 'We just want to know how you want it released,' 'I said, 'I don't give a sh-t about the message,'" Rodgers added.
